I have a beautiful friend (JW) to thank for introducing me to your music...I will never forget this wonderful song.it is filled with love ...I love listening to all your music now!
I sent a video response (HNX4jZTClKU) that is a rip from an old swedish music VHS-"magazine". There it was presented as a "real" music video. For whatever that's worth... :)
As I watch this, there is an advertisement on the top-right corner regarding leonard cohen himself. This is probably the only time of where the adverts complements the video material.
This was my introduction to LC. I was driving through a country road, deep in Wisconsin, and this thing came on NPR. I pulled the car over next to a field full of dry, withered who knows what, and listened hunched over the wheel.
I know that feeling ! I was "captured" by this song some 24 years ago. Was listening to it and dying of "accumulation" of beauty of words, music , metaphores. Through this song I have discovered Frederico Garcia Lorca, the Soanish poet killed by Franco , rejceted with his love by Salvador Dali.It was Lorca who fascinated Cohen and Lorca's song inspired Cohen to write this song based on Lorca's words. So I was there 24 years ago in POland you in Wisconsin ture art
In a way it is even better in English. He says it took him years to do and he obviously loves Federico because he called his daughter Lorca. Poetry is hideous to translate. Take another Lorca: Verde, que te queiro verde (Green, I want/love you green) - literally. I defy any translator on this planet to put that into English - even Leonard.
@mingulay29 This is a complete tangent, but as a long suffering plymouth argyle supporter, i truly thank you for the 'untranslatable' Verde, que te queiro verde!
@mingulay29 This is a complete tangent, but as a long suffering plymouth argyle supporter, i truly thank you for the 'untranslatable' Verde, que te queiro verde!
Adoro esta canción, pero en esta versión hace falta el hermosísimo contrapunto de la corista en el álbum original.. estoy loca buscando su nombre! Si alguien lo conoce...
Thanks for the explanation! I was wondering where Jennifer Warnes was... It sounds so strange without her, especially in the 'and I'll dance...' section.

@nagyi1954 Can somebody send the full Spanish! lyric to my inbox? I'd love to cover it in Spanish! I do a number of his tunes but have not tackled this one before, the Spanish would motivate me to do so. thanks!
@eruseron Hey then you might be interested in me! I'm always being told that I remind people of Leonard Cohen all the time! But, ya know...like a much younger....less talented.....fatter.....different looking....less appealing version of him!!! Without all of the 'Songwriting', and 'Poetry' abilities. And of course by "I'm always being told" I simply mean that people rarely tell me that I specifically DO NOT remind the Leonard Cohen. So logically of course I must. I also have a L.Cohen tattoo!
I also heard this song for the first time yesterday on Radio 2, amazing. That's the only reason I listen to Radio 2, every now and then they play a gem of a song I have yet to discover.
@owleyes777 me and my mate agree that leonard cohen has got to be our absolute sexual icon. his penis IS a fine penis, no matter what. i just know it. and im not gay :)
I was waiting for Jennifer Warnes to come in in all her beautiful harmony at 2:30. If you can listen to it on cd, you'll hear one of the most erotic verses ever.
So much better than the video with the 3 blond boys. I would still like to see a video of this song with skeletons dancing, empty prison cells (Auswitcz and PnomPehn?), and despair at having lost one's love to reasons outside one's control. One of my favourites from the album. Thanks, all the same, Mr Cohen!

@BWMcT I loved you when you opened Like a lily to the heat. I´m just another snowman Standing in the rain and sleet, Who loved you with his frozen love His second-hand physique - With all he is, and all he was A thousand kisses deep. Incredible
I love you Leonard

@mingulay29 I would be easier to translate by moving more toward contextual and symbolic meaning rather than literal meaning.
In other words, I have heard it as " New, I want you new," which makes far more sense.
