  • Steal words? You realize english is a collection of borrowed words, right? And it isn't stealing, it's a loanword. Like a la mode, it's french for "In style."

  • well it is quite normal for a language to have loanwords. the japanese borrowed the word "orange" from the english language. But even in english it is just a loanword. they have taken it from the french language. And they took it from the spanish language (naranja). And they took it from the arabs (naranj) who took it from the persians (narang) who took it from sanskrit (naranga).

  • I really am not trying to sound rude or mean or snotty but Wrong Choice of words right there, using the word "steal" should have said something like why do they sound the same but saying steal makes it sound so bad, and saying "lie" and "good job japanese people" she looks a bit offended. Other wise way to go eating that snail,I would not have been able to do it.

  • "Borrowed" is probably a more tactful way of putting it. "Stealing" is such a strong word.

  • hahaahhaah...

  • I actually learned a lot from this...I need to brush up on my language but they seem like very fun people.

  • lol her cup says snoopy

  • that dad looks awesome lol, and i cant stand snail lol i feel your pain :P, if that was snail?

  • Wow they are really lovely... Tell them that for me! :-D

  • awe!! I don't know what the shit everyone else is yapping about, but it seems like you really love ur host family and they really like you too.... tell her that youtube doesn't think she looks a day over 25 ;)

  • We "steal" Japanese words too.

Such as tsunami, sudoku, karaoke, and sushi.

We can call it tidal wave, number play, song-singing, and raw-fish-on-rice but who really saids those?

    だからお母さんは正しいよ

    日本と米国は国際

  • @yoh7351 We borrowed them, They are Loan Words after all. :^D

  • @yoh7351 We Germans are "stealing" English, too, mwaha. We even change the meaning sometimes. We actually call our cellphones "Handy" ;P

  • 9:00 Oh shit! Huge change in attitude! Must think before accusing Japanese of stealing words from English!!

  • They seem real nice. :)

  • I love OKASAN!! ^^

  • To be quite honest I think you shouldnt have been sooo rude o.o and STEAL wow dude seriously im embaressed 4 u and they use it because it is a foreign word >.<

  • To be quite honest I think you shouldnt have been sooo rude o.o and STEAL wow dude seriously im embaressed 4 u

  • To be quite honest I think you shouldnt have been sooo rude o.o

  • Dont tell them to shhh >.<

    Daijoubu? WTH?

  • me hobby is buying car? lolllll

  • lovely family! lucky you!

  • 0.0 um.. your question was very rude i believe.... you could hav said something different or nothing at all the word "steal" was a extremely rude

srry if i sound rude... :3

but thanx for asking about that because i have been very curious about why they use alot of English words in their vocabulary ^.^

  • Ahh, lol. She says orange better than I can.

  • I think your host mom was very nice with you. She was nice and so respectfull ^^

  • @sionigiripo whats a host mom or parents?

  • @99knight It's like a family who receives guests in their own home. And the parents in that family will be a host parents that you can treat the same as your mother and father. It's a very good method if you want to be quick learning a different language, because you can talk like everyday with host family with their language. It's like training and learning, but very fun (if you get a very nice family) :D

  • @sionigiripo do you have to pay them? i mean how do they Handel every day expenses

  • @99knight Oh, of course we have to pay. It's like we have to pay for staying in the hotel, right? hehe. I don't know about every homestay program, but I think they will arrange your meal. Usually for breakfast and dinner (It's already included in program's cost). Anyway, I'm not an expert for homestay program ;p I just had once last month in Tokyo, Japan. But it was great! If you interested, maybe you can search on website. There's a bunch. I hope It help :D

  • @sionigiripo how long do these people stay with them? dont they miss there real family?

  • @99knight Well, it's your choice. You can arrange how long you wanna stay. a week, a month, etc. Even for a day, I think. And Who doesn't miss your own family and house? of course everyone does, right? :)

  • @99knight Is that a music joke?

  • Kai is pretty much escargo. .I've eaten it, it taste good

  • loved the vid dude i was laughing my ass off

  • the reason why there is a lot of English nouns in Japanese is because things (for example chocolate and tomatoes) are introduced to them by westeners. In asia, having English words in native language is pretty common. Unlike in China, many didn't translate it into their own language (so it sounds intelligeble to foreigners) or rename it.

  • just wanted to tell you ty, i really enjoy your videos their so great! entertaining, informative, and really let others see the "normal" day life in japan. :)

  • glad that you share your experience with us!

  • This is making me soooooo hungry!!!

  • Yo i think i got the answer to your question dude. they use english words because the japanese nation have been influenced by the Americans when they occupied japan during the war. also times changes and people adapted to it and that japan is a major business partner to america so that people in japan would know some words in english if they needed to talk to americans idk. this is js my guess. you can do the history of it or something. but this seems the most logical why they use english words.

  • lol you people are all blowing this WAY OUT OF PROPORTION. She didn't seem offended at all. when I was staying in japan, my host was remarkably similar to her...and trust me, you will KNOW when she is not happy.

the other person I was staying with she didn't like, and she made it KNOWN.

If she would have been offended, I'm sure he would have known.

I don't think many of you get "sense of houmour" because you seem to take tom way to seriously.

    sense of humour = good!

  • Can i just say what you mean by host family

  • steelは失礼だろう。useなら分かるけど。

    Orangeはみかんじゃないし、Juiceというものは日本にはなかっただけ。

    Jarostone is right.

  • your kaa-san is funny

  • 08:52 T_T why? whyyyyy? she was so happy T_T

  • wow, u over did it in 8:57-9:55

  • monjyayaki is from Tokyo. Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki is from Osaka.

  • Wow dude...you're an asshole. You can tell the woman was offended by what he said. Her attitude quickly changed after he said steal - It was embarrassing even watching it after that.

  • "steal" is a very strong word. your host parents seem a little bit offended by your question. At the end, the "good job, japanese people" is kinda rude, imo.

  • omg all that looks so tasty (except for the kai). i love japanese food.

  • I wouldn't say "Steal"

  • mm Tom i kept watching this vid over and over again i laughed alot since i know alot of japanese

but honestly japanese people dont take stealing easy so you should have said something like "why borrow" atleast that will mean no offense xD!

  • ああ!すごいです!うんち。。。 this made my day (*w*)

  • omg my homestay was in akita too XD!!!!!

  • um they use some of our words because some of the things didn't exist in their culture until it was somewhat Westernized. It was simply easier for them to use english words like Ice cream, rather than making it up themselves.

  • @jarostone Best, and most logical, answer I've read.

  • yea not very many subtitles >.> kinda understood the green parts but practically none of it

  • i like how you used greeeen :D

  • Did you ever try yakisoba,pocky,or wasabi?Do you have a box lunch?^^

  • Ahaha they are such cute host parents!

  • you host parents seem awesome :D and i love how the father helps out in the kitchen. :)

  • I LOVEEEEE YOUR HOST FAMILY!!!

  • Some of the foods looks like body organs :X

    Delicious!

I want to go to Japan as a foreign exchange student sooo bad. It's not even funny :/

  • The father looks like mine without a mustache and straight hair!

  • Certain names are acknowledge more than the others because that certain name is often used with that noun.

It's just like how most people use "Tsunami" instead of large waves or tidal waves these days.

  • what is the name of the song playing while you are chewing that chell thing? (and the name of the band too?)

  • If they went out to get a hot dog or pizza or something would they call it getting American... or something?

  • @hazelstream

I wonder if they have Hotdogs and/or Pizza...

    Pizza is Italian...

Hotdogs and burgers are definitely American though.

I wonder what they call McDonalds.

  • @strawburrylilly McDonalds. XD It's a name so I don't think it would be any different.

  • @hazelstream

True... Do you think they say Hamburger the same, too?

    lol xD

  • @strawburrylilly i think they call McDonalds, MacuDonardo, i saw that in another video :)

  • so lucky you are!

    they look so nice ^^

  • Weird food

  • The mom is adorable and so is the dad.

  • ROFL!!! You're very lucky they actually told you that the end part was the poo... Funilly enough, during my first exchange they had me munching on the whole lot (including the tasty tender parts at the end) and i thought it was great...

It took for me to return to japan 3 years later for the same group of folks to tell me the 'tasty part at the end' that i was enjoying was poo :P!

    ahhh, good times lol!

  • why would u ask that

that not a good idea she looked mad when u asked that

  • @AkitaTom

Your host mom and dad both seemed really nice!

    They look like great parents!

  • @AkitaTom you do seem a bit rude I noticed too.... mostly pessimistic or something, i do love your videos though :)

  • @AkitaTom u got kicked out?

  • @pur0mu

I'll try to not sound rude, but I just have to ask. Are you retarded?

  • i agree with you...its okay to be curious but not ignorant. he couldve just said why do japanese say orange juice.

  • i kno right?

  • @pur0mu i think it was less anger or anything like that it seems to be more of confusion in not understanding the original question and then to the contumplation of the answer

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA YOUR FACE "POO?!!!"

  • why do japnese steal so many chinese words? I can get the general meaning of paragraphes of japnese. they should completely use Kanji

  • its like that all over the world....i'm swedish and i understand norweigen. they did't steel anything they have their own languish. its just similar to ours. do u understand or does it sound to goody goody ^^

  • japanese stemed from chinese. The first japanese were travelers sent from china by the emperor. They couldn't find what the emperor was looking for so they fled to an island now known as japan and lived there. They made a language more easy to speak and write than chinese but with a lot of chinese words cause they were well chinese. I'm pretty vauge on the details but yeah that's what happened

  • *myth

  • @TheTechgenius Japan invented their language because the early immigrants from China were not capable to understand/write the complex Kunji words or they sort of forget after they reached that island, Korean invented korean in one of their dynasties and now the people even believe the universe was created by them, and they clamied confucius was korean so are other famous inventations!!

  • okay,oaky I don't everything but that's what I was taught besides I'm just 12. I probably wasn't taught what you know yet

  • @TheTechgenius HAHA. what am I trying to say is human beings are extremely selfish animals afterall, when you are strong , they admire you. when you are weak, they try their best to abandon you. But eventually, the culture is rooted in their culture forever and you can't never get rid of it~

  • by your logic...Should we be speaking latin?

  • Just wanna state the fact , most of the countries around China went to China and studied the language/culture when China was prosperous. However, when China became "weak" later on and in recent dynasty, those countries try so hard to get rid of the relation with China, thats why Vietnamse invented theri "Pin Yin" language after using chinese for a thousand years,

  • Japan invented their language because the early immigrants from China were not capable to understand/write the complex Kunji words or they sort of forget after they reached that island, Korean invented korean in one of their dynasties and now the people even believe the universe was created by them, and they clamied confucius was korean so are other famous inventations!!

  • N'aww, they're lovely :D

  • I am sorry but foods look disgusting.

  • bizarre foods =)

  • I wish to be 15 or 16 again and go to japan to learn that great culture, just like you... an amazing experience

  • In the Philippines if there's no specific native words for it we use English because it's the major language of the World... :D

  • The monjayaki stuff looks really yum.

  • By the way, sazae tates pretty good and chewy. It's pretty expensive too(and increasing so).

I have never tried escargot but I'm guessing taste very similar.

  • Japanese have been adapting foreign languages forever. First, it was Chinese, then Portugese and now (mostly) English. As you can see in the video, Japanese equivalent of "juice" had been dead for sometime, juice is now a Japanese word.

It's the way of life in Japan and I don't see it a negative thing. Japanese people like to learn something and adapt something from outside world.

  • lol

  • I wanna do this host family thing as well. How do you get into this?

  • when you take japanese in high school, you sign up for this program called J.E.T. and you can go study overboard and have a host family. :O hope this helps
