Penn has written soundtracks for films starring Burt Reynolds, John C. Reilly, Julianne Moore, and a laundry list of others. His albums are strongly admired by the music community for their lyrical content and stylistic skill. I'm sure any studio musician in Nashville that is accomplished has played with some of the greats, but at the end of the day, most folks do not know (nor care) who studio musicians are - even if their musical prowess is superior. Penn is a fantastic writer.
I absolutely adore this live version. The album version is OK, but sounds extremely different. The keyboard and drums are stellar here, as well as his charming vocals. If only Mike had released "March Live," with "This & That: SNL Live version," I think it would of sold just a well as the original "March."
@totaLybeetLeJuice Given that I've been a Nashville studio musician for 15 years now, and given that Michael Penn had 15 minutes of fame 20 years ago, I'd wager I'm as "famous" as he is. Try another insult, sir.
@JoltinDjango This is a silly argument. Obviously he is more famous than you. I could randomly pick 1000 people across the country and at least 5-10% will probably know who he is, especially if I ask music fans. However, the only people who would know you are the artists you've worked with (maybe). 22,000 people that watched thios video know who he is, and they don't know you.
Nothing personal or any comment on each of you talents, just facts.
@JoltinDjango asshole... i would have used stonger language if your last name wasnt django....but you dont understand many things so u need to grow up a little read stuff... not just american propoganda and have an open mind regarding these kinds of stuff
This show aired two years before March was released, when his band was still called The Pull. Patrick Warren, the keyboardist, had been with Michael since the Doll Congress days.
This is the first time I see Sean and Michael together. Back in the days, Sean always refused his brother´s help. No Myth is so far his best album right in the middle when pop was dying and alternative was raising. "No Myth" was one the the best songs in 1989 along with the Ocean Blue´s "Between something and nothing" and The Cure "Lullaby".
Such an awesome song :P

Terrific song. Sure mom liked him best. Michael's somewhat sweeter, less abrasive and a guy will burn canyons till almost forever.

This has always been my favorite song off "March". Penn deserves much more success than he's had.
