I found it funny how many people took up span-am in the 1990s, only to sell everything off weeks after the centenial was over. Now, hardly anyone does that impression, so this is about the largest gathering you're likely to see unless someone makes a new movie...
its mostly the obscure hard to get weaponry and uniforms that are to blame for the low awareness. You can still see Krags and Springfields in competition tough. Some of us actually wear the old cartridge belts while shooting and all that but its pretty much impossible to reenact WW1 and prior wars in large numbers, simply due to the unavailability of era rifles.
Interesting. I got a buddy in Columbia South Carolina who does Span-Am war re-enacting. They have a unit in S.C. I thought about doing something like that or going to try and do World War One Re-enacting. never got around to do it. I mostly do American Civil War and Revolution Re-enacting with the 41st Ohio Infantry and for Revolution 5th Virginia Infantry which are both out of Ohio.
Was this the second day Fort MacArthur SpanAm war battle or the first day? I was there on the second day, the Spanish soldier in dark blue with the machete who tried to charge the Rough Riders when they went for the Nordenfeldt. I was wondering if anyone captured my 'death' on camera :-)
