I don't know what Segovia would have made of this stuff: he's probably turning in his grave right now. I think it's brilliant. I used to play duets like this back in the 80s with a chap called Bruce Janaway -- we called it "free form" -- but we were nowhere near as good as these two. Who says classical guitarists can't improvise?
Thank you for posting this wonderful performance; compositional and improvisational genius. Gyan's own compositions are superb, virtuosic and sensitive as well.
I was a spectator - it was at the World Guitar Congress in Baltimore a few years ago. He seemed very bored and disinterested. He gave the performer very little guidance or critique. I was very surprised and disappointed. Afterwards, I talked to him about questions I had regarding the Balkan Miniatures and he blew me off completely - told me he really didn't remember the pieces very well. Perhaps he was having a bad day. I still love his work and would give anything to study with him...
I also attended that masterclas at WGC in Baltimore, Summer 2004. I liked it: I thought Dusan was laconic and very to the point. In regards to his Balkan Miniatures: he has written so many pieces, he doesn't have to remember them all :)
If you can get past the opening improv, the actual published piece starts at 4:33.

Got to hear Dusan, Gyan, and Andrew York play free form jazz one afternoon at band camp. What a gorgeous mind bender that was.

@deelymc
There is a score, written by Gyan, but I am not sure if it is published. Gyan can be contacted at Gwunderthump@gmail.com.

Credo che questa sia una chitarra da Walter Vogt (un liutaio tedesco), tavola in cedro, fatta gli 1970s.

Dusan is one of my favorite composers and soloists but he gives the worst masterclass I've ever attended...
