This is a dog chasing his tail topic.....Lets look at it from the victims perspective....Suppose a murder happened to a family member, wouldn't it be nice if the surviving victims had the choice of punishment of the convicted. Justice is really what the victims percieve, isn't it.
@1coffeecup That is NOT what justice means. If that were the case, what would be the point of having a judge determine the sentence. It sounds more like your describing revenge.
@qwerty35124 Actually the judge doesn't determine the sentence, the law does. The judge can only sentence within the parameters prescribed by law, meaning minimum or maximum sentence for that particular conviction. All I was saying is the surviving victims should get a say in the penalty process. In a way they do by addressing the court on the impact of their loss, but I would like to see a more direct impact.
To elaborate, let me ask what good does it do to kill a criminal without letting him ruminate in his misdeeds first? Do you think feeling remorse is easy? It sure isn't, it's a tough road to go down. I'll bet you anything that some criminals on death row barely even feel sorry for what they've done by the time they're about to be killed. What kind of justice is that, letting the criminal leave this world instead of letting him live with his guilt? There are things worse than death.
THANK YOU! I'm glad somebody has finally made note of that... I thought I was the only one with common sense. Of course someone would pin you as a "liberal" they love to throw that label around. (If someone actually was liberal are they supposed to be offended?) Taking joy in the killing of others as if you have any relation to the criminal case while their loved ones who have done nothing wrong have to suffer doesn't seem very CONSERVATIVE to me.
@MissStarling88 ......You know, that makes alot of sense. Timothy McVeigh was so smug and full of himself when he was about to be executed. He had no remorse, no understanding of what pain he caused those people. He wanted to be a marter. I think if he was given enough time.....he would've come to understand what he did and had a change of heart.....
Anyone who believes in the death penalty should watch the film "Dead Man Walking" (1995). It will give you a whole new perspective on what it truly means to kill someone in the name of "justice". There's a difference between bringing someone to justice and/or just exacting revenge upon them for what they did. The concept of the death penalty isn't so black-&-white, you know. Sure, it's easy for any of us to just ignorantly say "Eye for an eye" & wave it off, but do you *really* think about it?
@MissStarling88 off course that is easy to say untill someone rapes, tortures and kills a loved one..would you still think it is immoral? some people are beyond salvation.
@Barre76 You can look at the situation from that perspective, but would you ever consider stepping into the shoes of the criminal's own family? Most people don't consider *that* perspective: having to see a member of your family get the death penalty after they'd committed terrible crimes. I'd wager that's not an easy road to go down, either. I think there are punishments that are more effective, & that carry more justice, than death...death is the easy way out in my opinion.
@Barre76 I'd rather the criminal be locked away for life, so they can truly feel what terrible things they've done, & have a chance to feel remorse. Unlike you, I have hope that people can change. Yet, most taxpayers aren’t willing to have their money spent on keeping tons of criminals alive in prison; they’d rather have them put to death just to save a dime. Humans, even ruined ones, shouldn’t be that expendable, & to consider them as such is what’s truly immoral, not to mention revolting.
@MissStarling88 You'd be willing to spend tax payers hard earned money to upkeep these murderers? I wouldn't I rather spend tax payers money on a gun and a bullet and rid the world of these scum!
@nrjelley You've proven my point. Most people find ruined humans to be expendable, especially when it comes to money. It's amazing how many people are willing to throw their own humanity to the winds for their precious dollars. Have you ever watched "12 Angry Men"? You sound just like that one juror who said he'd love to pull the trigger to kill the accused in the electric chair. Henry Fonda's character rightly pointed that juror out to be a sadist. So think about what you're saying here.
@MissStarling88 Its not a question of money, its a question of justice and punishment meeting the crime. However the fact that it is cheaper to kill criminals of the worst type than to keep feeding and looking after them untill they die in prison, is just an extra bonus to delivering justice. An eye for an eye! You liberals need to wake up and smell the coffee. They are a danger to society, they are a drain on society,.................
@MissStarling88 ............... they gave up their human rights the moment they stripped innocent people from theirs. I'm sorry, the the fact you liberals even have the slightest sympathy for murderers, rapists, paedophiles etc. repulses me. How you lot can sleep at night I don't know!
@nrjelley "You liberals"? You don't know me well enough to even guess at my political views, so I'll inform you that I'm an Independent Libertarian with Democratic tendencies. Way to show your ignorance.
Anyway, people view justice differently; what YOU see as justice and what I see as justice is obviously different. I for one don't think justice is as simple as "eye for an eye". To me, the death penalty is giving the criminal the easy way out. If you really want justice, it's gonna cost you.
@nrjelley And I assure you that I don't "sympathize" with the worst of criminals; I can empathize with them, which is more than you can say. But like I've said before, human life shouldn't be considered expendable. There's hope for anybody in most cases; as an upcoming psychologist, I *must* be one of those people who thinks humans can change their ways & mindsets. You believe whatever you want to believe, & let me do the same, m'kay? There's no need to be so judgmental, you know.
@fcface07 I'm a Born Again Christian the Death Penalty is no justice for no one.My Uncle was Murdered back in 1986 I never met him only 18 years old,I believe in karma what goes around comes around ok.The old testement in the bible says says an eye for an eye,but the New Testement says turn the other cheek if your a christian,
OH dreadful! id hate to committ a crime in america...in scotland id only get 15 years for murder...not that im planning one you understand..and then id get time off for good behaivour...but in america they give you sentences like 99 years!! and death!!..oh blimey!
lol! you should come to scotland!! theres not too may serial killers in scotland..there only one i know of is peter tobin...they will get multiple life sentences..there is only one female prison in scotland and its a real holiday camp!
@heston99 i most likely will at some point :). and i'll have to look him up, he might be another interesting killer. hmm one female prison eh? haha so i imagine most of the women there are good hearted creatures?
well i would say good hearted..actually most females in that prison are in for drug offenses or theft..infact,some women were sent to jail for not having a licence for a television!..and youll probably think im joking!
@heston99 no i do believe you, i'm just curious why do you need a license for tv? i mean ofcourse if you don't your cable bill but hmm that's interesting too. guess it's a scottish thing hm? but hey atleast your country and be proud to say that it's rare to find murder. atleast female murder :)
its thw whole of the UK that needs a tv licence its to pay for the BBC which has no advertising...there are detector vans that go about the streets to detect if you have a licence or not..and many people have been jailed for not having one..its ridiculous!...infact there a guy wanders about britain called the naked rambler,he wanders about in the nude and constantly gets arrested, they reckon he could spend the rest of his life in jail if he refuses to put his clothes on!
@heston99 It's a pity we don't give out harsher sentences in the U.K. Just look at the state of our country at the moment. We suffer Feral youths stabbing and shooting each other on an, alomost daily basis. The respect for law and the pursute of a peaceful life is almost impossible. Walk down any street late at night on a weekedn and watch the drunken violence, that our emergency services have to deal with. Even the fire and ambulance services, have to have police escorts in some of our cities!
