  • I heard this theme in my head when i meet the UN building, its so wonderful

  • Those UN soldiers on the picture are Norwegians stationed in Lebanon :)

  • Oh darn I haven't played Civ 2 since I was a wee lad, I forgot they had real videos like this, very cool. Will have to try it again soon. I'm playing Civ 3 a lot lately and it's a great game but they don't have these cool videos (or the awesome advisors that I never forgot from Civ 2 lol).

  • And then the UN came along and Un-nazified the nazis. Hehe got to love Idiocracy.

  • The peacekeeping thing is actually real. Excuse for war.

  • I loved to build UN, then nuke the shit out of my competition and then force them into peace

    :}

  • The Last of the Mohicans?

  • @nemekun and in Civ 5, unfortunately, there are no real videos...

  • @KyleMcCloudSr - I think the beautiful oil paintings more than make up for that though.

  • @HansoFoundo That's true, the uniqueness of each wonder video from each release is pretty cool.

  • It's funny that it's true that democracies can declare war basing on "peacekeeping missions". Why the fuck is called peacekeeping if it's war?

  • @Atlacatonatl Because they're keeping the peace between two other factions. Factions which, if left alone, could escalate their war and involve other factions and soon many, many more lives are lost than if there had been a peacekeeping mission. It's an evil, but its by FAR the lesser of two evils.

  • @Atlacatonatl Stalinism. Did you know that the Soviets were "protecting" Poland? Did you know the War in Korea was simply a "police action?" Occasionally we really want to make peace, so we remove everyone who doesn't.

  • Imagine all the people....

that's what first came to my mind when I heard the very first seconds.

You will be missed, Civ 2.

  • wow Israel would be totally fucked

  • @nemekun But it's harder to create equal quality vids through CGI, and nowadays, using live-action in video games is viewed as unprofessional.

  • @ThePeterKrpan

Save for the fact that it consistently fulfills its primary purpose. That purpose being to serve as a forum between nations. The parts where it "fails" are those where the constituents want it to fail, as an UN with teeth would actually limit the sovereignity of the members. UN programs that aren't politically charged like that tend to work rather well.

  • also called: Civilization 2 Wonder Worldwide Government

    -.-

  • @kacknoobdeluxe Oh lawl.

  • Love that harmonica! Great choice!

  • best. game. EVER!

  • 0:18 is my favorite part

  • @nemekun you're a idiot

  • @OmaiDesu so having an opinion that disagrees with yours makes that person an idiot? the un fails because of people like you

  • Best Civ game ever!!

  • What's the music called?

  • At least they werent in favour if IRAQ 2003

  • To hell with the UN, NATO, and all the globalist bullies.

  • The UN is a wonderful symbolic gesture, but I fear it lacks muscle. I wish we didn't need muscle to get through to people, but it's the case.

  • @inamerica55585 If the U.N had muscle, the political right would freak out. Hell, if the U.N. introduces some sort of worldwide banking regulation to stop banks raising interest fees on repayments at an unfair rate so that they can't unintentionally drive people below the poverty line in an attempt to do business, then they would start screaming about how globalist bullies want to make the world into a "socialist dictatorship" or some such bullshit. Sad fact is, some people would BELIEVE IT.

  • @451harri Ranting doesn't help, sir. The U.N. doesn't have the power to enact a banking regulation. Maybe the IMF or the World Bank does...

Also, banks have to make money too, you know...

How do you define an unfair rate, as well?

  • @inamerica55585 You're right about ranting. Anyway, there are people in America who are subject to such high interest rates on their credit card repayments that they're in an infinite cycle of debt. Only recently has the government taken steps to prevent banks from letting people get into this situation.

    Anyway, stuff like that.

  • "Peacekeeping": May declare war as a Democracy 50% of the time

George Walker Bush the younger in a nutshell amirite?

  • I want religion back, i also want more liders

  • anyone know where the photo at 0:27 was taken?

  • You can keep your great walls and polo embassies, I got a UN!

  • @Altimadark

    lol.

  • @Adolf41er It's too bad the real UN isn't this awe-inspiring.

  • @Altimadark

yes. then the world politics would be much easier to handle, lol. :D

  • @Altimadark Yes, Perhaps the most corrupt, and least transparent organization on Earth, with great big swagger.

  • @eeektavius The UN has problems, but remember that it's only as powerful as its member states allow it to be; the General Assembly's budget is smaller than that of the Tokyo fire department. If you look at UNICEF, UNESCO, UNHCR, World Health Organization, and World Food Programme, they do a tremendous amount of good with the resources available to them.

  • @eeektavius No doubt.

  • @Altimadark it is beautiful it exists, giving every human on earth certain rights, so this is actually really important and inspiring

  • @MidasRK1 Humans have those rights naturally; the UN does not grant them.

  • @Altimadark dude, what about slavery? Those rights are not naturally given....

  • Comment removed

  • @MidasRK1 Slavery is natural, it is liberated people enjoying the right to oppress each other. Doesn't make much sense, but its definitely natural if every society develops it independently of one another.

  • @SuperSmashyfication whatever... go tell that to Chinese children working in Firework factories or they have nothing to eat...

  • @MidasRK1 Hey, I said slavery is natural, I never said it was good. It is horrific and should come to an end, but as I said, it is a natural part of all societies, like war, murder and rape. If we can end it forever it will be a great service to the world, but we all know that's just not gonna happen.

  • "Peacekeeping": May declare war as a Democracy 50% of the time

    I lol'd

  • @jedihunter176 Only the American civilization is exempt, because we're cool like that.

  • That last part with the benefits...If only that always true, especially about other civilizations always offering peace!

    Thanks for the upload.

  • who R those UN soldiers, the patch says denmark, where r they? must be in the 80s and some conflict?

  • @nemekun hell yeah!

  • I WILL VOTE FOR A GLOBAL GOUVERNMENT ! GLOBAL UNIFICATION !ALL HUMANS SHOULD BE EQUAL ! WE ARE HOMO SAPIEN ! AS ONE WE WILL SURVIVE !

  • United Nations in 21st century: Undercut by dictators and corrupt democrats

  • I wish we got vids when we made wonders in Revolution....

  • @nemekun then let's not talk about the civ 5 wonder ' vids'!

  • Wonderful. Inspirational yet a little sad.

  • its amazing the nostalgia I get from this video

  • Civ 2 had the best advisors and wonder vids.

  • isn't it ironic that the founding members are nations, who have nuclear weapons?

  • @inmate92 No, it's not ironic. They were the ones who were still standing amongst the ashes and who had all the power. Of course, there's no point in admitting a weak country to the Security Council.

  • @inmate92

its not ironic at all, it seems fitting that when humans finally achive the intelligence and knowledge to destoy the whole planet, they also achive the intelligence and knowlegde to know enough not to. i hope...

  • Civ 2 had the best videos of all the series

  • @nemekun it was much better in Civ IV than it is in V. there.... you get a painting of the wonder. they certainly could've done better.

  • League of Nations Mk II

  • @VersusARCH Sadly, it hasn't been much more effective than Mk I in the ways of peacekeeping, though I must say that their food distribution program is decent.

  • Every Civ2 wonder video gave my the goosbumps and tinglings in my legs.

The other Civs cant do shit against Civ2.

  • "Peacekeeping"

  • @NukeSocks and don't forget the good ol' classic ethnic cleansing. UN will give you the ability to kill any non-conformist, any person not in the in-crowd, as much as you want up to 50%!!!

  • This video was why I built the UN when I was a kid playing Civ 2

  • What music is this? Can someone tell me the name perhaps? (Or the name of the file..in the OST)

  • In a basic way the UN is still doing its job. its giving the nations of a world a forum to argue and bicker where as before they never did this and just ended up answering each other with guns. The UN is incapable of preventing many things but it keeps the world far more stable then before. We of course fail to realize this in the modern age because we are so used to the UN at this point.

  • @rockinnorwegien all diplomacy is eventully defeated by war like the leage of nations the UN will fall either by a better system or a large war it could not prevent eg between US and allies and China. Its ironic that the UN was set up for peace and made most conflicts it got involed in worse

  • @rockinnorwegien It does provide a place to bicker, however when conflicts turn to violence, it does absolutely nothing to help, it possibly worsens the situation. The UN send peacekeepers who do absolutely nothing (I don't understand why they so often just stand by whilst civilians are killed). Since the UN sends peacekeepers, the other countries don't bother to send troops (thinking the UN will suffice). It happened in Bosnia, where I'm from, and 250,000+ innocents died...

  • @nemekun I soooooooooooooooooo don't like the Civ4 vids because they only show 500X fast building nothing other.

  • @nemekun Agreed.

Now I want this game because of the videos and the high council.

If you have played Civ2 then is it better than Civ4,same or worse

  • The UN is a great idea..unfortunately, its horribly useless in real life....

  • @wrath231 Mainly because of USA and the veto power...

  • @untmortadela The United States is not the only perm seat holder. Countries are not allowed to vote for things that benefit them.

  • @Ricky156 What does matter if everyone vote yes and US can just veto the whole thing

  • it feels like I should have seen a boring video talking about the UN after that but no instead of a boring video I get to play a strategy game... Sweet!

  • Absolutely perfect in every way.

  • i could be using my time to put away laundry....instead, i go back to looking at cinematics to some of the best games i played over a Decade ago and wonder if i should buy them again.....hmmm this game....im thinking a definite yes...but only for the system i played it on...PS1

  • civ 2 has a breattaking wonder building system compared to that of the later civ games

  • This cinematic, like all of the wonder videos in Civilization II, is nothing short of beautiful. It creates this mood, perfect for the video it depicts. The united humanity, an Earth at peace, that the UN hopes to one day achieve seems realistically possible when I watch this. If the whole world watched it all at once, maybe we'd have a better shot.

  • I used to play this 4 hours and loved these videos, Just a shame the end of the turn took so long l8r in the game.

  • That floating helicopter between 29 and 33 seconds speaks volumes of what I feel about the United Nations. Picture that valiant helicopter as it hovers majestically over on the horizon, always watching over us, and waiting... and waiting... and waiting... and waiting... and waiting... an- *BOOM!* (I just got killed by terrorists/insurgents/militants/street-thugs/[insert generic villain here]

  • Good show. I wish the part with it getting blown up didn't keep happening, though. I believe the same thing- this video speaks volumes, as you said it, about my own feelings of the UN as well. The ideals it stands for are as beautiful as this video, but sadly it hasn't worked out so far.

  • This video remembers me the uncountable nights of gameplay in civilization 2. Thank you for posting.

  • Because they are reality and civ 4 is all 3D.

  • Curioso que pongan a las naciones unidas como paradigma de la democracia y el mundo civilizado cuando en la realidad la mayoria de los integrantes son dictaduras y estan cohartados por paises musulmanes. La prueba la tenemos en los balcanes.

  • Beautiful.

  • United Nations, more like United Nation. I loved this wonder, because it let me take over the earth as a Democracy.

  • Unfortunately most people don't appreciate what they have until the day they lose it.

Without the US veto Israel would get clobbered by the rest of the world for their actions in the Palestinian territories.

  • Maybe that says something about their actions in the Palestinian territories.

Remember, there is no good, there's no evil, just shades of grey.

  • Civ2 videos are great. Much better than civ4 videos.

  • League of Nations Mark 2.

  • It's simply amazing how wonderfully does Sid Meier bow to the glory of humanity, sadden upon its misery, yet still make a game so enjoyable.

  • @FrameSticker And how he killed a series.

  • 0:16

    indian flag

  • also the flag of the United Kingdom and the flag of what looks like either the Soviet Union or the People's Republic of China.

  • :D

    i noticed dose too :)

  • Prob PRC

  • So... I'm confused why people would thumb down my comment, it was just an answer

Question: what does PRC stand for

Answer: I write "Its the People's Republic of China" and people thumb me down?

  • Its youtube , stuff like that happens.

  • It'd be China. The game was made after the fall of the USSR.

  • maybe this clip was made of old footage

  • @BombasticTrooper ussr flag, another flag in back ground is yugoslavia

  • its sad there are no references in this game

    about Avicenna father of medicine...

or Imam Mehdi founder of Al Azhar universirty

    in Egypt

  • Ageed. ;/

  • along with women's suffrage, this was my favorite to build. throw king richard's crusade, leonardo's workshop and the great library into the mix and you have one hell of an arsenal for democracy.

  • I did not like this wonder to much but the music they put into really made it immersive.

  • It is based on the soundtrack from 'Last of the Mohicans - The Glade (pt. 2)

  • I love that:

United Nations: "Peacekeeping": May declaire war as a democracy 50% of the time

    So true.

  • I loved this cutscene =)

anyone knows the music in it?

  • Soundtrack to "Last of the Mohicans" Song: The Glade (part 2)

  • wow thanks =)

  • Thanks. I've been looking for the source song as well.

  • Soundtrack to Last of the Mohicans - The Glade Part 2

  • Wow 50% of the time...that pissed me off so much in that game, I couldnt freaking fight a damn war without congress doing something behind my back, then I realized...fuck Im just going to be a Monarch.

  • That's why you become Communist whenever you want to start a war, and then switch back when you're done.

  • to bad the game isn't

  • One could say that, but I'm not the only one who thinks these videos give Civ II character and make it different from most of today's high-tech games.

  • when i have seen the video by game i got only the link to univeristy (german Version). Maybe not a bug just a mark ;)

  • How come the U.S gets such a brilliant place on the U.N securtity council but doesnt contribute any troops?!! thats ridiculous

  • Nukes.

  • Internal US politics, UN politics, the fact that we were the driving force behind the founding of the UN, and the most powerful nation then and now. I believe Korea was the last conflict the US really put troops into.

  • Actually, the Korean War and the Gulf War were both UN authorized under the UNSC's power to enforce the laws of war. The US sought a resolution against Iraq for breach of the peace and they got it, and we all know how the first Gulf War ended...

  • Good point! The only Iraq on most of our radar screens now is that mess we're currently in...

  • Well, gee, they only contribute 22% of the budget...

  • jmhb.. !!!

  • your right they do spend a lot of time squablling and wasting time but it does have its moments.

  • Anyone knwo what the theme that plays is called

  • Too bad real UN is not very helpful...

  • Blame the Big Five.

  • take away the big five and UN would still be worthless if not more

  • The UN is not a world government, but a council of nations. It is only as effective as the states that constitute it.

Even if the UN could not get anything done, it would remain a forum for civil discussion between sovereign states, which I think is fundamentally a good thing. So I think it is unfair to dismiss it as worthless.

  • @Witangemot

Better than power blocs and alliances.

  • Wow a place where all nations can come and talk and try to better live togather ya am failing to see how its a bad thing idiot

  • veryvery handy, along with great libery one of the best

  • da vinci's workshop is also one of the best

  • This, along with the Great Library, were key to winning on Deity.

  • Leo's workshop saved my butt a few times too!

  • I've always loved this cutscene

  • I think the person who made thi sgame new about the NWO- To build this you needed to discover communism-.

  • Lol, I never realized there was a Danish UN peace keeping soldier in this little sequence, funny (well, to me it is ;D).

  • @TomZAm80 Where r they stationed, that guy is holding an antenna

  • The Dutch flag is on it too!!!

    Hup Holland Hup!!!!!!!

  • @josgamer The USSR, YUGOSLAVIA falg r present

  • GreenVI, what is this comment system for? hydehk 's comment was pertinent, so I think there's nothin' wrong with it at all. Why would you single him out against all the other somewhat "political" comments?

  • "Peacekeeping" LOL - the right to attack in order to keep peace, that was a good bonus.

  • Loved this game.

Any of you know what the music is? My friend made the observation that it sounds very similar to "The Glade (Pt. 2)" from the Last of the Mohicans score.

  • lol however in the reality UN cant do much as they are just a huge country organization bullying the weak and enemies, eg "i rack"

    oh well thx for sharing

  • hydehk, this is not a political video.

Do not start or continue political debates where they do not belong.

  • Part of the greatness of this game is that it makes young people question elements of the game. Political debates are without a doubt pertinent to any discussion about this game.

  • If Civilization teaches history Alpha Centauri teaches philosophy.

  • Explain?

  • Well, if you look at Alpha Centauri you will see a lot of deep, meaningful quotes that give much to think on.

  • they should include new world order in the next civilization game.

  • Woohoo! These guys helped me so much in my war with south korea! (civ 2)

  • Our last hope: the Parliament of man, the Federation of the world.

  • Imagine the international strife there would be if someone bombed the UN Building

  • The UN Are Awesome!:

  • civ 2 de play station 1 o pc?

  • I am involved in Peacekeeping missions and several of the videos are great and I would like to download them to show during training and to put on disk. When I try to download/blog the video there is some type of blocker which comes up and I have tryed on several different computers and each time I get the same message "internet explorer was not able to open this internet site. Your help in this matter is deeply appreciated. Or is it that these clips cannot be copied?? Help in Hawaii. Thanks

  • How did you get involved into Peacekeeping missions? I wanted to join but instead I am in the U.S. Army.

  • Um your country's armed forces have to agree ot send troops to become un peace keeprs but good luck the us has never provided un peacekeeprs lol something to do with the fact they dont like there troops to be placed under foigion control or some such nonsense

  • No, I know. We've only contributed only a handful of troops. We do contribute some police officers though. I think over 300 from a 2004 estimate. But you're right we don't do it primarily for the reason that we don't like the idea of foreign control over American troops.

  • fuck the un, they are a joke
