This was the song they closed with when I saw them in Indianapolis several years ago. It's hauntingly beautiful, and yet it tears me up every time I hear it. Just can't help thinking of the friends and family who won't be here to celebrate Christmas with this year. The toy piano at the end makes me think of children and childhood, and if you listen closely, you can hear the soft sound of sleigh bells.
Twice I have been fortunate enough to get tickets to Mannheim Steamroller when they performed in Billings, MT. Both times when this was played I'm sure there wasn't a dry eye in the house. I don't think anyone even breathed for 5 minutes. It's amazing to hear it on the radio, you tube, CD or whatever. But nothing will ever compare to hearing it live. If you haven't, do so at the first chance you get. Thanks for posting it here. Now I need to go get my CD's out and listen to all of them.
Silent Night as it is is one of my very favorite Christmas songs by way of my Christian faith. It's very special to me. When I first heard this version about 5 years ago, I was BLOWN AWAY. This version just says so much without saying a word. This is my year-'round favorite Christmas song. The end just makes me feel like I'm riding in Santa's sleigh in the snow headed back to his place in the North Pole, with nothing but a full moon to light the way.
If you really want something to tug at your heartstrings, youtube search for "9/11 tribute I was there". A Texas DJ wrote a script with this version of Silent Night in the background. It was released just before Christmas 2001. If THAT doesn't make you cry then please ask God for a new heart this Christmas Season. Thanks Chip, Thanks Mannheim, and thank you bd for posting. Merry Christmas Everyone!!!
I love this song. Silent Night is one of my favorite Christmas songs but this version i ever heard. i lost my mom on 4/2/2009. this was her favorite song also. thank you so much for posting this.
@aptharsia I'm glad i'm not the only one that does this. It's such a beautiful rendition i cant get through it without my eyes tearing up. No matter where i am, when this comes on the radio during Christmas time i stop what i'm doing and enjoy it all over again.
Favorite version of Silent Night and probably favorite Mannheim performance. I've had the pleasure of doing (Mannheim's creator) Chip Davis' hair off and on for years. He's a nice guy.
The first time I heard this was on the Rush Limbaugh show,it was the most beautiful version of this song I've ever heard, the next day I went to a music store and bought it.i agree davefrmca,it brought tears to my eyes as well.

This is the most beautiful version I have ever heard. Listen closely at the end and you can hear the "wind" blow.

This is the only modern version of Silent Night that does it justice. It is like a prayer.
