I really love these analog synths, but I am not an electrical engineer and don't have the time to dedicate to learning a new craft. I just want to make music with these things. Is there a way I can buy one directly, or hire someone to build one for me?

@jsf8336 Try ebay. Some of these DIY mini synths show up there from time to time. Otherwise I would advise you to consider the Dark Energy from Doepfer.
@musicfreemedia Hi, Yes, Ray Wilson is a FANTASTIC guy. Music From Outer Space is by far the BEST DIY-Synth website on the planet. No surprises there. Expect superb service and excellent communication from this man. I strongly recommend Music From Outer Space as a prime site for anything DIY-Synth related. Good luck!
I appreciate what MFOS is doing for the non-professional enthusiast community, I think it's great to have so many new people exploring in their own way modular synthesis.
i'm looking for a DIY synth that is simpler and cost less to get all the parts.. like less than $50? You know, more compact even if that means the synth will be more limited. any ideas?
this looks cool but i was wondering say if you made a song using it,the only way you could perform that song exactly the same again would be if you had some memory of where every dial and switch was? there is no way of saving presets right?
Thanks for your comment. Part of the charm of a true analog synthesizer is that you have to start out fresh every time and build your own sound from scratch. It's easy and fun to write down the settings from the panel and "store" your patches on paper. Making a digital patch memory function would be ridiculously complicated and far outside the scope of such an easy DIY synth project as this one IMHO. :-)
Veeery nice.. what exactly do I need to do, to get all the details.. (send an email in that outterspace webpage?, Im confused, cause these are the sounds Ive always wanted)
Everything you need to know is right there on the Music From Outer Space web site. ;-) If you are wealthy you could always order one from me though :-)
As the above video shows, you can use it as a stand alone unit directly connected to an amp without any kind of controllers other than your own knob tweaking :-)
how much do you think i could save if i got the parts myself, also considering i could swing by my old high school and talk to a teacher i know and get some things like potentiometers for free.
It depends on your location. In my experience I save about $30-40 by sourcing myself. That's not really much. If you don't intend to spend the better part of an afternoon ordering parts from a long list, you might want to consider the convenient kit option.
In this one I used 2N3904's matched as closely as possible. When it is warmed up this synth tracks reasonably well over 3-4 octaves. It tracks very well over 2 octaves which should serve most needs I suppose. Keeping this synth in tune at all times can be a bit of a hassle unless you implement some fine tuners for the oscillators.
does this thing have a cv gate??????

@1787dude Yes it does. See my other videos for demonstrations with cv/gate in use.

@Dovinia I thought it was amazing when you hooked the keyboard up to it.

@Dovinia i love thse synths your using here, how would you compare them to the doepfer though? can both go into a daw?

@ThePellerhead I don't know. I don't have or use a DAW. I use audio tape. I guess I'm old school. ;-)

2:09 reminds me a lot of the FAIRLIGHT crack intros on the Amiga. Whee, fun times!

Reminds of VCS 3 that I have heard on 70's records.

the VCF is pretty fat on this synth

search for the wacky weird noise maker, or music from outer space
Rbrownsword 2 years ago
@speghead14 look for the ATARI PUNK CONSOLE, lots of info on the net, fairly simple to build
ColaberMilk 1 year ago
@speghead14 Look for the WSG! if you price your parts out it could easily be less than 50.

How much will all the parts cost me? (I want to buy everything to build the whole unit)
Thanks

The best and most informative video I've seen of this unit so far. Did you order the pcb from the USA?
tacticlespasm 2 years ago
Thank you! Yes I buy my mini synth pcb's directly from MFOS.

Dovinia... your panel looks nice, did you use a photo printer or is that real silk screen?
YpsiSynth 3 years ago
I use A4 size decals printed on an ordinary printer. On top of that i spray a thin layer of clear coat.

If you plan on building a lot, order them yourself. I did and learned a lot from it.
just make sure you get the board first so you can make sure you components lead spacing matches best with the board. But im anal like that ;-)

cool.. thanks for the info.
Im building 2 patchcable SL.
Ill be putting up video of them.
Im going to try lm394s and 2n2222a trannies.
I hear the 2n2222a's you dont need to match, but we'll see.
I have the fine tuners on it.
mdl76 3 years ago
Wow, I look forward to see that one. I might get in touch to hear more about the patching out if you don't mind.
Dovinia 3 years ago
are your trannies matched or did you use lm394s?
how many good octaves of tracking you get?
thanks for the video.

Great video! They look like heaps of fun! I like the enclosure you used :)
I need to stop putting it off & get around to building one.

Building one of these is really not that hard. Ray Wilson has some excellent pcb's for this project for sale on his Music From Outer Space site.
