Before i read your comment i was sort of thinking the same, but you cant be sure that their intention wasnt to kill him. Using a paddle isnt very different from using a knife, no one swings a big thick paddle at someone's head without knowing that it can cause death.
True. Pushing someone down the wrong way can cause death. I still maintain that the intention wasn't to kill. It just doesn't fit. In order for there to be a charge of murder in any degree, it has to be proven that the intent was to kill. They should be charged with manslaughter. A person taking a gun or knife to another person, know that the chances of the contact will result in death... but hitting a person would a woodoon board does not have the same reasonable expectation.
Now, would you hit your sister or your brother with a very thick long wooden board. Even "if" lets say he didnt want to kill him, his intentions were very harsh knowing that the board can cause serious damage even death. If he were playing with Derrion and hit him accidently then thats a different story.
The difference is, he wasn't fighting with his sister or brother; the overall difference being the lack of love or compassion to withdraw your levels of force. That being said, the overall goal in a fight to inflict as much pain on an opponent to cause death but enough to win the fight, earn respect, and become feared by the opponent enough so that they give up. I heard that he actually went to the fight...and in the result he lost his life. He was actually fighting and didnt have to be there and would still be alive toay if he had not gone to that fight to actually fight. Regardless if or not he was in the fight, you lose site of the fact that all of the kids involved, even the kids who killed him, were victims in some way or another. After all, they were kids. Some were neglected as children, others had their actions growing up, encouraged by those who should have been teaching discipline.

Watching this video made me feel like this 16 year boy who died is part of me in someway.
I first heard the news about this the very next day when this happened. Its unbelievable that this kid died from this horrible act of cruelty.
The people who killed this 16 year old knew about the serious risk of damage that this kid was taking and yet they didnt care.

That much is true, & I don't disagree. The point that I was trying to make, however, is that it was a fight. How many of us have had them in school? Be it the tit for tat passing licks, or a no holds bard fist fight, we've all been there. I think this just got out of control. Before i read your comment i was sort of thinking the same, but you cant be sure that their intention wasnt to kill him. Using a paddle isnt very different from using a knife, no one swings a big thick paddle at someone's head without knowing that it can cause death.

True. Pushing someone down the wrong way can cause death. I still maintain that the intention wasn't to kill. It just doesn't fit. In order for there to be a charge of murder in any degree, it has to be proven that the intent was to kill. They should be charged with manslaughter. A person taking a gun or knife to another person, know that the chances of the contact will result in death... but hitting a person would a woodoon board does not have the same reasonable expectation.

The difference is, he wasn't fighting with his sister or brother; the overall difference being the lack of love or compassion to withdraw your levels of force. That being said, the overall goal in a fight to inflict as much pain on an opponent to cause death but enough to win the fight, earn respect, and become feared by the opponent enough so that they give up. Trust me, I know what you're trying to say, but the evidence is not substantial enough for a murder charge.

Realistically speaking, Again, I don't think anyone expected anyone to die, nor do I believe the killers expected to kill Derrion or anyone else. I think it was a freak accident and, while I agree that adults should have broken it up, I don't think they expected that. I think, if they did suspect that this would happen they would have... of course they would have... but still... The only charge I can see them hit with is neglect.

I have a solution to all of this. All blacks simply return to their homeland of Africa (where they lived prior to slavery). Then all whites leave Africa and return to Europe or America. I heard that he actually went to the fight...and in the result he lost his life. He was actually fighting and didnt have to be there and would still be alive toay if he had not gone to that fight to actually fight. It's two seperate neighborhoods that were involved and i guess because he was apart of one neighborhood he felt obligated to jump in. In conclusion I do think it was pretty bogus and he shouldnt have died like that.

According to witnesses, he was there with a friend who got in the fight and he was pulled into it. The video doesn't show him fighting, though. So, who really know.... fact remains it's a tragic loss that could be avoided. I'm getting tired of blaming parents because sometimes, it's not just about poor parenting. That has to be hard to hear; that, "You are an unfit parent," though you have done, what you thought, was the best. Sometimes kids just get into thing w/o us knowing. Outside influence.

It doesn't seem the intent was to kill. The intent was to maim, in my opinion. This was simply an unfortunate accident. When you grow up on that side of Chicago, when you're in the situation he's in, it's not so easy to just "leave" as it would be for you... probably someone who grew up sheltered from this type of activity. My birthday was September 30th and I was so sullen, I did not celebrate it. This reminds of Mr. Oscar Grant III, who was shot last by a police officer last New Years Eve on the platform of the Oakland train station in San Fransisco. That story saddened me as well.
