i love everything save the children does and stands for, but i'm kind of still questionable about it.
i've worked closely with villages through heifer international where only a couple children are treated or cared for with housing from save the children and the rest are excluded.
i don't mean in any way to question the validity or goodness of the organization, but rather how do they select the children or when would they help a whole village?
I've never seen anything like that. In fact, the Save the Children I got to know and love makes a point of helping everyone - or there will be a backlash.
Are you sure you aren't confusing Save the Children with a religious charity? A few religious-based charities only help kids based on religious-belief and/or affiliation.
I think we should question charities - but we should also temper that with giving them some slack.
For example, Heifer International's key marketing strategy is their "gift guide". Many people donate "goats" to their friends on the assumption that a goat has been bought on their behalf with their donation.
But, as is well documented, Heifer Int'l actually just puts the donations into a general fund. It's hard to see exactly what donation bought what. Questionable? Maybe. But I give them slack.
i agree that every organization deserves such slack and that every honorable organization does use the money for the good, even if not directly as it may have been intended to have been used, unfortunately.
don't worry, wasn't trying to say that Heifer was better in any way, i was just curious about your selection process, since i know ours.
There are definitely charities that limit their help to a specific group of families - and it's *usually* for religious reasons.
But Save the Children is completely secular. So, I was surprised you mentioned they were limiting their aid in that manner. You sure it wasn't a religious-based charity that had a similar sounding name?
Also, for "big" projects like village-wide water purifcation, they have to do it on a village-by-village basis due to funding limits.
@ellces - thanks! And please email me sometimes. Would love to learn more about Heifer and its livestock programs. Been meaning to look into that for a while because it's such a proven income generator for people in need.

Truely awesome man. That is a good program. I wish that the other programs didn't make it so hard for the honest ones.
