the cheapest I found to get these was magnet4less, it had an N52 2 x 2 x 1 in. bar that had a 270 pound pulling force that I got that is a little stronger than this one.

The pointy ends have a more concentrated electric field due to its sharp curvature. Electric fields are at right angles to magnetic fields, so the magnetic field, however weak, concentrates at the tips. In other words, the forces of the magnet on the tips are stronger than on the flat heads. Try cutting off the heads of the nails and observe what happens then.
