@ophone77 Oh no! Not another silly comment about drinking beer using a wine glass. I am just so fed up with these comments. Please do your own research on it before you criticise. I run out of gas trying to explain...
@michaelyblam Cheers to that! Beer from a wine glass, especially Belgian ales, is often the way to go. Let them breathe, I say. I actually tend to drink certain beers from my stem-less Riedels. Check out BeerSnob dot ca where my buddy and muddle our way through beer reviews...
@michaelyblam While drinking kriek from a wine glass is okay (that's the perfect shape, actually :-p), Belle-Vue is not the best kriek Belgium has to offer. The cherries used in the brewing process are quite bitter and Belle-Vue tries to 'cover' that bitterness by adding sugar thereafter, all in order to appeal to 'sweeter' palates... You can read 'sweetener' written on it.
@MaistrePathelin Sour cherries are used to spice this beer just like other breweries. Bitterness comes naturally from it so that's part of the taste spectrum. However, Belle-Vue is NOT the best kriek producer as they add much ale to the lambic base. Smaller breweries make tiny productions of lambic beer and do not take much short cuts. Sadly we just cannot get it here!
@michaelyblam (part 2; sorry, I write too much ^^) I'd would recommend organic kriek from small breweries to get a taste of an authentic kriek! Problem is: they don't export that much :-s
@MaistrePathelin I totally agree with you. Love to go to Brussels to sample tons of weird and wonderful (and not so wonderful) stuffs. Pity smaller Breweries just do not export their gems!
@MaistrePathelin I totally agree with you. Love to go to Brussels to sample tons of weird and wonderful (and not so wonderful) stuffs. Pity smaller breweries just do not export their gems!
Lindeman's Kriek is definitely a better beer and has more lambic content in it. Yes, there are many other fruits occasionally available like apricot, peach, cassis, banana and even tea...
Yeah here in Belgium this beer is seen as the typical girls' drink :-) But of course that doesn't make it taste any less good.
After you reviewed all the Belgian beers (could take a while) try reviewing some of the Jenever, probably the only drink that's even more typically Belgian than beer.
I had Jenever before but it was yonds ago! I honestly cannot remember the taste. I will see if I can get this in Seattle. No chance here in BC to get it!
Actually I don't like the "normal" wheat jenever, but I really like the fruit-jenevers, in supermarkets here you have the choice of dozens of different flavors (including kriek) but my favorite is the fairly standard apple-jenever.
Comparing a Trappist to a Kriek makes no sense. It's like comparing a Peterbilt 18-wheeler to a Maserati. Both excel in different ways. Personally, I enjoy both!
You are right; I must have been drunk when I said such a simplistic thing;
Geuze is a beer that has much in common with kriek but is less sweet; I don't like the sweetness of kriek. I do enjoy the first glass on a hot day; but then I have enough of it.
Kriek Bellevue is actually owned by Inbev the Brazilian-Belgian brewer corporation; so I tend to avoid the Bellevue, and drink Kriek Lindemans, mort subite,.. IF I drink it at all.
you don't drink beer out of 'common' glass (read wine glass), even trying it! Every beer has it's own type of glass. And it should be labelled with the brewery on it. Mind you the temperature is also important. The glass should be well cleaned and prepared before drinking. Try 'Kriek Boon' or '3 fonteinen' when you really want to tast good kriek beer.
I had Cantillon - It was excellent and also I like the label! Now, Belle Vue for sure is BIG - here in Canada it's under Labatt - another giant. However, Big doesn't mean bad or small doesn't mean good. To be fair I have tasted better Kriek Lambic than this for sure but this is drinkable and presentable. Another factor to consider is BV is readily available but others are not!
Kriek Extra! Wow! I haven't even heard of it. Wish I could try it in my country. The liquor distribution here is controlled by the provincial government and some products are hard to get by! I shall try to get it from Seattle!
Screw them. The reason I am a beer appreciater is because of you. Beer has such a variety of flavors it's amazing and makes being a beer connesuier very interesting. Drink on my friend!
Thanks for your support and encouragements. I appreciate your kindness...good beverages are meant to enhance happiness and friendships - cheers to that!

Another factor to consider is BV is readily available but others are not!

cool, i prefer a rodenbach which is sour, kriek is too sweet for me. You do a good job, getting me thirsty like that :-)

I agree with you but every quality drink has own tiem and place!
michaelyblam 5 years ago
Belle vue is about 15% lambic, the rest is regular ale. Try Cantillon or Drie Fonteinen if you want to try 100% lambic.
They are also unsweetened and use whole fruit so there is zero sweetness, they taste NOTHING like belle vue.
