yeah ok..."tribute bowie" so adrian belew and dennis davis were pretty hard up for work so he started playing with a bowie tribute band with none other than the thing white duke himself. pretty groundbreaking to start a cover band of your own material...bowie was always ahead of his time..

Bowie says the song is about a soul radio station he heard in the States.

Bowie is a bit vague about what the song is about. He has said different things at different times as far as I can see. He used to use a cut and paste method of generating lyrics i.e. writing down interesting random phrases and re-arranging them into a more or less logical pattern (see the Alan Yentob Arena documentary about Bowie in America(BBC)). This is how he wrote many of his early songs at least. He may simply have used this method here. However, he was using a lot of coke at this time.
