  • RIP GENIUSES OF COMEDY

  • Love the fact that taxi drivers still call him "Mr Preview" still!

  • Only No. 16? These are definitely in the wrong order.

  • Great stuff shows us that good willed comedy is genius

  • 0.45 "You've chosen all the right sketches although not necessarily in the right order." Right. This is Eric n' Ern's best guest-sketch and only the "Breakfast Sketch" is up with it in their repertoire. Why the eventual winner - a middle-aged dancing newsreader's legs - is supposed to be funnier and stand the test of time better than this, I cannot understand. I saw these first night of broadcast (Xmas 1971, 1976). PS - Glenda "beauty what like I have got" Jackson - Xmas 72 - is easily #2 IMO.

  • If this only got to number 16 what the bloody hell came first?

  • @TVloverXx I remember the show - number 1 was a Little Britain sketch. Who voted in this poll - Heat readers?

  • @mercifulzeus01 What a joke! Haha, probably was Heat readers to be honest!

  • two of the greatest

  • Arsenal!!!

Sheer genius. Absolutely, utterly, totally marvellous.

  • Perfect.

  • Brilliant

  • Rubbish....... Brilliant

  • Awesome!

No swearing, No filth, just genius.

  • Just one amazing duo no one will ever replace them they might imotate but never replace

  • Eric and Ernie are greater than the sum of their parts, but that doesn't mean Ernie's genius equals Eric's, it doesn't.

  • This sketch was originally done in the Sixties - but without a famous conductor. In the Seventies revival, Previn MADE it. (Pity the last bit is missing - where Previn played it like Eric).

  • @jkarani LB was good the first 2 series... but thats when it should've been left. To me, the only funny thing about LB now is Tom Baker's announcements.

  • @jkarani How on earth is that possible? You ask the british public what the greatest comedy sketch is & it'll be this, fork handles or dead parrot without fail

  • Andre previn owns a whole miniature orchestra that he keeps in his pocket

He's got the minature violinist, minature cellist, minature conductor and the star of his minature orchestra is his 12 inch pianist....

  • sheer genius as fresh as when it was shown

all the right laughs and definitely in the right order

  • Just fab!!! In at No 16??? I'm utterly shocked and appaled.

  • Missed the ending where he plays Erics piano tune.

  • Love the look on Previn`s face at 2:15.

  • the utter shock and horror is hilarious

  • The sketch with Mr Preview and the breakfast sketch have got to be my all-time favourites. I am so nostaglic for these days of comedy. They didn't have to swear to try to be funny they just were or shock reaction from an audience like today's 'comedians' and we never, ever thought anything about the sketches they did where they shared a bed together. Have to add Eric's adlibbing with John Lennon was a gem too. I am ashamed to confess I still smile when I hear Eric say "tea Ern".

  • What ever happened to REAL comedy like this.

  • Please, forgive me but composer's name is Grieg, not Greig.

  • Yes, it's GRIEG!

  • Thank you :-) Of course it is :-)

  • Ok so there is a statue in Morcombe in honour of Eric, It has been too long now that Ernie has not been recognised in the same way! Without Ernie Eric would have been nothing and the same goes for ernie! They both needed each other to make the act work so for only one to be recognised and not the other is tragic and appauling!

  • I just saw Previn here in Pittsbugh this Sunday at Heinz Hall..He is 78 now a little older..more grey hair and has a little trouble walking but hasnt missed a beat with the baton. He played Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite, Concerto for Harp and Orchestra (world premiere) and written by Previn along with Beethoven's #4......Great stuff now..and great stuff in 1971.

  • Why are people so retarded? They marked this apt comment as spam.

Perhaps the cooment is mocking the last word said in the video?

  • Thanks very much mate at least someone has now twigged the fact that the reason I said RUBBISh is because of what Morecambe said at the end, I am not mocking it because it is a great sketch

  • we do apoligise

  • The full version is now on You Tube. Search Andre Previn Full Sketch and you will find it. It's a gem!

  • On the full version: "..hopefully you understand all these squiggly lines here.." Pissing my pants again after another re-visit...magical.

(Full version in my comedy playlist)

  • One beautifully subtle joke in the sketch - Eric is in fact playing the right notes, in the right order, but in the wrong rhythm.

  • Is that right ??!! Can you prove that or supply your source for that bold statement ?

  • Classic.

  • Different class

  • Andre Previn is fantastic, especially considering that he only just learnt the script and that he isn't an actor

  • @fiddymcegg10 Privet!

  • Anyone who thinks Ern is superfluous in this sketch: his spontaneous soft-shoe shuffle when Eric plays 'the right notes but not in the right order' - after his solemn MC bit - makes it perfect

  • Eric's face at 2:30 is the absolute best bit...

  • Pure genius!

  • forget the dead parrot or fork handles THIS IS THE GREATEST COMEDY SKETCH EVER !!!

  • brilliant --

i have the full sketch in 'favourites'

  • so, want to see the whole clip on here. Love it when Previn comes over to Eric looking aghast after he has played the wrong tune, and Eric asks him,

    'Something wrong with the violins?'

'No, there's nothing wrong with the violins' he replies disdainfully..

'Well that's only your opinion' deadpans Eric...Genius

  • yeah, definitely their best sketch. hope someone puts up the whole thing one day. I remember the line where Eric is discussing the sheet music with Mr. Previn and says: "Not too heavy on the banjo's". Hilarious!

  • I agree with violetultra - Ernie's silly little dance behind Eric at the piano just makes it

  • 2:47-2:56 is the funniest bit, just PURE GENIUS.

  • I have been on Gods earth for 50 years now and this remains about the best sketch I have ever seen. I would love to se the whole thing again as there were brilliant lines in it not included in this clip. How was it only number 16? The only question should have been 'What was number 2?'

  • Eric's reaction and timing at the end when Mr. Previn stops playing is brilliant. "Rubbish!" Cracks me up every time! Good sketch but Ernie is surplus to requirements in this one. What's his point in this sketch? Would have been just as funny without him. It's quite obvious who the main man was in this double act.

  • Comment removed

  • ha ha! Have you seen MR LONELY - Adapting the novel by Eric Morecambe copy and paste it into the search on youtube! It's excellent! :0)

  • thanx i lov morecamb and wise it was a nanna that told me and thanx again my favourtive is yr breafast one which i new about before

  • Eric = comedy genius

Ernie = lucky he knew eric

  • Simply not true. Every funny guy needs his foil, his straight man. They were pure comedy chemistry together.

  • RUBBISH

  • Beautiful moment

  • Anybody able to tell me where I can get this on DVD ?

  • This may sound like a stupid thing to ask, but...what's the Greig piece called?

  • The Grieg piece is called Piano Concerto in A minor.

  • Such a shame the full original appears to be unavailable to watch anywhere!

  • No doubt Andre Previn trained for years to become a musician and conductor yet he is most famous for being called Mr Preview by Morecambe & Wise

  • I doubt he ever feels bad about that. Its a classic sketch, and I'm sure he feels glad to have been part of it. I'm sure it did his Career no damage whatsoever, most likely enhanced it.

  • Later, they did a series of "I worked with Morecambe and Wise, and look what happened to me" mini sketches. Mr Privet/Preview/Previn appeared on the back of London bus dressed in a bus conductor's uniform, waving his baton. I think it's safe to say he doesn't mind that much :) And yes, this is the funniest TV sketch of all time, so far as I'm concerned !

  • I have never heard of Morecambe or Wise, but I've been listening to Denis Norden on, "MY Word" for YEARS and it's cool to finally see his face!

  • You should check them out. They were absolutely brilliant, still are.

  • Even the orchestra breaking their sh*te laughing, brilliant stuff that.

  • Morecambe and Wise, just magnificent.

  • What a pity that the last 15 seconds have been cut off!

  • lol

  • They will never sell any ice-creams at that speed!!!

  • My favourite Eric Morecambe line!

  • Laurel & Hardy, Morecambe & Wise; what more in comedy could you want...? Timeless. Thank you for the post.
