Man, the poor taxi driver is desperately trying to strike up conversation with his international tourist clients, proudly showing off the developments along the way to Jan Smuts, but all he gets back is monosyllables. Aikona wena!
Before making comments, understand this: I paid him to talk along the way: 125.00USD tip along with the R400 for the cab fare just to give the tour to the airport. Trust me, he was VERY HAPPY! He was not at all upset or saddened by us not talking. I use this same cab company every time I goto SA on business. Unlike most other riders, I tip my drivers well because most riders never do.
@radioguy95 Before trying to spin me a yarn ('These are the new offices'...'Ah, interesting'... with no attempt to actually film them on your 'tour' heheheh), how about you understanding this: you got taken well and truly for a ride. He should have turned off onto the R25, cos Jo'burg International is not actually in Joburg, it's in Kempton Park. You could have saved yourself at least half an hour and a couple of hundred bucks too :-)
..And no I didnt just stay in Sandton, I went Diepsloot (however you spell it, and Hillbrow amongst other places. People shouldn't bad mouth a place before visiting it!
I have been to Jozi ( I am from the UK), Yes it has its problems but so does everywhere. I loved the city so much that I am going to work there for a year in December. I was only there for a month last year and spent alot of time with mates who are from Joburg. They obviously told me the rights and wrongs but all I saw was friendly, welcoming people and a lively city with alot to offer. To be fair I feel more threatened walking through West London in the evening than I did in my month in Jozi.
Thank goodness for the end of apartheid. This is how a country should be run, good hi-ways, well maintained, flowing, and busy. None of this happened under Botha or his cronies. Now the country is hosting the World Cup in stadiums designed and buikt by locals! Fucking A! for the black man.
Yes, thank goodness for the end of apartheid, but you obviously have no clue. This highway actually was built under the control of Botha and his cronies, was well maintained, flowing and busy then too. In general, since majority rule, the country is on it's way down the drain. Do some research about the power company ESKOM and also about what is happening in the city centres, they are becoming crime-ridden slums.
Yes, I now holyfeck. My comment was very sarcastic. I know the country was in great shape before, much like Rhodesia was prior to Bobby Mugabe ruining the place and running off most of the skilled and educated work force that is needed to keep the place in good shape.
It is ironic that blacks flowed into S Af and Rhodesia during aparthied because it was better there than it was in their own countries.
The change should have been handled far differently, and by educated, not bitter leaders
Ya, and Adolf Hitler's regime wasn't too shabby either. They built the first motorways in the world, commissioned Volkswagen and rebuilt a destroyed German economy. I don't know what the Jews were complaining about in those concentration camps... Germany never had it so good. (yes, this is also sarcasm - the lowest form of wit).
This doesn't look like the HiAce taxis that cause all the grief, this looks like the internationally accepted form of taxi, i.e. a car. Maybe if SA taxis operated like taxis in the rest of the world, 1 fare to 1 destination, rather than all vying for passengers wanting differing journeys & diving off to the side of the road to pick up anyone and everyone, normality would prevail. But it's been like that since I learnt to drive in SA way back in the early 80s - you just need eyes in your arse!
even the drivers seem more disciplined as compared to those down here in oz lol (me included haha) .. i noticed the speed limit's 120 kph ... why arent we allowed over 110 kph here i wonder
well i was commentin based on what i saw in this film ...but i guess being a local you'd definitely know better ..i have never been to sth africa but u knw wht i've actually heard stories from my sth african and zimbo frnds regarding the muggings and shootings in Jo'burg and how it can easily be considered the crime capitals (amongst major cities) of the world .. .adding to tht the number of rapes etc ... havin said tht some othr ppl tell me jozi's a nice place?? dunno who to b'lieve :D
Whats the big thing about filming a freeway? Yes we have cars and computers, no there are no lions walking around and the person who said they would get killed well it could happen anywhere. Of course you have to be careful, there is a lot of poverty (and wealth). Cape Town and Durban are the places to go, avoid Johannesburg that's where there is major crime. Oh the poor taxi driver is trying to make conversation - the guy with the camera says hardly a thing - no music either - boring journey.
Wow, I just noticed there have been a lot of changes since I visited. By the signage, the airport has been renamed. It was call Jan Smuts when I visited. I stayed in an area called Mayfair which, if I remember correctly, was not far from the central business district. Maybe someone from Jo'burg can correct me if my memory is a bit hazy.
Johannesburg was an interesting city, but during my trip to SA, I much preferred Durban, but then again, I have an affinity for the beach. Stayed for three months. It's been 13 years now...about time to go back for another long stay.

good roads, well signed, friendly driver (you can hear his indicator when he changes lanes)... decent looking cars... New offices, townhouses etc... makes you proud..
This is one of the best taxi drivers I have dealt with. He had taken me to some of the local malls to purchase a power cord for my PC, as well as driving me into different parts of J'burg. I did not mind paying him $40.00 American dollars and the taxi charge of R350. The people here in SA are very curtious and friendly by far!
yes they are friendly here in sa but they dont give half a shitt when they drive! they do whatever they want, when how why and anything else whenever they want!!! the reason why this driver is driving properly is because it is a private toor. try having 35 people in that car as how they normally are and il tell u
Why would anyone be confused by such signs?

If we cut down on a number of TAXIS operating, our road accidents will surely decrease.

You are actually on the N3 Highway! You turn off this highway to get onto the R21 which takes you to the airport.
