  • Theory is as essential as breathing. Knowledge is power. This is anything but boring. If you don't learn music theory, you will never be a top tier guitarist. Being "self-taught" or relying solely upon your "ear" is nothing to brag about.

  • I'm sorry...what?

  • Lmao "jazz musicians aren't smart enough to have another scale in 2 directions" yeah right, not smart, that's funny!

  • funny man. Maybe he is one of "the others" in LOST.

  • like the old sack on the guitar; classy

  • nice video ... i am gonna see more

  • nice

  • Enyone else read the title ans "Modern Jazz Improv - Sharp 4 Melodic Minor Scale"?

  • It's like Seven of Nine teaching me guitar. I guess Stevie Ray was a flippin' Klingon.

  • The embarrassing and blatant reality is that with THIS much analysis, music gets lost, does it not? Did McCartney ever sweat these details before writing Blackbird, or Yesterday? Yet McCartney is not so "schooled". I came to the edge of all this years ago, stood at the precipice, then just spat over the edge. Texture, mystery and sense of occasion in music belong to everyone, not just eggheads preaching to the choir. 3 minutes and I was done, and uncomfortable. Sorry.

  • @GuitarGare Haha actually yes, yes he did :) So sorry all the best musicians in history have an understanding of these concepts, whether they speak the language of "theory" or not. In the same way that people can speak but not read and write. Theory is different from reading and writing notation. Boasting about your lack of knowledge is simply a pride of ignorance, and laughable. Granted theory without putting it into practice is about as musical as doing maths on a calculator to most people.

  • @sacredgeometry I hope that you don't think I was bragging about my lack of knowledge. In my case, modular knowledge, to a degree, was intuitive. In every single case I've ever seen in my life, these ones doing as the man above were suffering paralysis via analysis. They never got out and made a musical mark. -e.g.- Czerny played live once in 77 years? You can talk about flowers all you want but until you get out in the garden, I'm not sure about listening to a thing you say.

  • @GuitarGare I completely agree in that case, I have a huge amount of disdain for people that concentrate to hard on either area, it completely negates the point of knowing either in my experience.

  • @GuitarGare I'm assuming you're saying theory means nothing? Hopefully for your sake that's NOT what you mean..Yeah this guy really makes no sense whatsoever and everything he plays is boring and un inspired, but theory is EXTREMELY important

  • @SkwisgaarScampini Yes theory is important. No question. This is an ongoing discussion. Read some of the other comments. I'm not the only affected by the way this guy portrays his knowledge. Look at a clinic by Phil Koch for example. Lots of knowledge, Night and day presentation. Fun. A required lubricant for learning. If this guy right here was MY teacher, I'd be a garbage man today. (and making better money, lol)

  • @GuitarGare I get what you're saying sorry for wasting your time I didn't read the previous comments haha..

  • does the melodic minor scale play better if the guitar is wearing its shirt? and mixing the dorian minor and the melodic minor is ok only while wearing the guitar shirt? :)

  • Soloette with carbon fiber neck?

  • Tan bueno como fea es la guitarra

  • huh?

  • so whos gonna break it to him his headstocks gone?

  • @xxxEnterSandmanXxX Who's gonna break it to you that it was never there?

  • This is a tough lesson for sure... I think he might as well have gone over the acsending and descending variations of the melodic scale as well.

  • Hey great lesson. If I have one suggestion it would be to play over chord changes when giving your examples. It will help us with hearing the scales in context. Especially would have helped with the Bb melodic minor over C minor concept.

  • Comment removed

  • I like to sing the melodic minor scale when my girlfriend sucks my dick

  • @andrew19vato so .....once a year or so?

  • why is his guitar wearing a shirt?

  • @Lydianshadow I can understand protecting the guitar when teaching lessons. But in the controlled environment of a TV studio, there's no need for the protection.

  • BRAIN ANEURYSM!!!!! ARRGGHHHHH!!

  • hey John! - nice vid

  • My brain is like scrambled egg after trying to take all that in............

  • the most weird technique ever seen haha

  • Finally someone that knows what they are talking about I know this is irrelevant but I just came up with it what do u think of blending minor pentatonic with harmonic minor I know it's weird because in harmonic u have a major 7 and the pent doesn't have a 2nd or a six what do u think of that

  • So basically what hes saying is take a minor arpeggio and get creative with chromatics...targeting the notes within a chord, just listen to Django.

  • DIS GUY MUST BE AN ALIEN OR SUTIN

  • chatty guy..

  • Great demonstration.Thank you mr Stockwell.

  • This gentlemen knows his craft. Period. Thank you for sharing.

  • very nice lesson. i like the idea of mixing C mel.minor with C dorian b2. btw, what kind of guitar is that?

  • Brother of Donald Sutherland

  • 2:21 HIS LOOK IS KILLER HEHEHE

  • i like his spider fingers

  • Moral of the story: melodic minor can be played over the minor chord your on, as well as a whole step below to imply the 2nd mode of melodic minor (dorian b2) on your original minor chord. That is crazy. The second one is like a sub of a sub (melodic minor instead of dorian b2) to imply a new sound. Awesome. I never would have thought of that.

  • @BlikeNave You can also play it a half step up, a whole tone down, or a fifth up over any dominant chord. Or you can play it straight over a dom chord.

  • God this guy is so good. I can learn so much. Ahhh too much work for me as a guitarist. I've already learned so much, need to practice and use it in these ways now. Bleghhh. Work, but it will be fun. I just want to be there now!

  • NIce lesson

  • lol, jazz musicians aren't smart enough? :D

  • I have actually learned something from this jazz guitar lesson.. I've learned how my music theory knowledge suck donkey balls :) I know a lot of scales but compered to this guy im little mouse... Respect sir.

  • this guy is good

  • Excelente consepto y buen sonido. Gracias por compartir y difundir el conocimiento.

  • Wonderful lesson, made me want to try playing melodic minor scales

  • Fuck you jazz musicians are smart.

  • @PsiloPsymon420 he's a jazz musician. obviously it was a joke.

  • @PsiloPsymon420 Wow that went right over your head didn't it? Even though he was kidding, you kinda proved his point by not catching the joke!

  • what kind guitar is that?

    Great stuff

  • please stop blink

  • Excelent Guitarrist !!!!

  • Thank god for youtube that allow such a vast myriad of content. This guy is so relaxed and he has an attitude that is very inspiring.

  • Trufire's got some great lessons. I wish they would put more on DVD so that I can just buy them. Nevertheless, when you think you are ready, they are just an internet connection away. Good, good stuff.

  • Unfortunately I'll have to brush up on my music vocab before this lesson can make any sense to me, haha.

  • people might find this more interesting: melodic minor myths geoff stockton

  • Oh !!

He looks like the guy from road trip

  • @maxomilian Kyle ?

  • Who does he look like :s

  • I love this video! He's talking my language!

  • Great lesson! Don't listen to the idiots posting stupid comments; they're probably upset because you're not talking in "tabs".

  • Somebody cut off your guitars headstock.

  • that's why his guitar has a condom on it

  • This guy is ridiculous!

  • A fantastic lesson with really captivating sounds - putting the magic back in music. Really makes me want to get this stuff deeply ingrained. Big thanks to John Stowell, a true magician of the fretboard and a master musician.

  • I played One of the his notes and my guitar instantly got pregnant.

  • Beautiful tone, excellent lesson

  • John Stowell is a true Master!!

  • This guy's a genius!

  • basically... he explains how to use melodic minor in a regular dorian situation... the only differance in the scale is the mel. minor has a maj7 or #7 rather than the dorian which has a b7. but it works because the sharp 7 serves as a LEADING TONE. rather than a chord tone as the 7 in dorian. BUT, he does not esplain using mel min as a triton substitute, which is what everybosy also uses it for. try substituting the melodic minor scale a 1/2 step above your 5 chord in a ii-V-I. BOOM... Jazz.

  • @GLeone221 BOOM... the altered scale, which is a mode of the melodic minor. I think the main purpose of this video is to explain his use of the melodic minor scale in itself, not the 6 other modes.

  • He supplied the epiphany damn ! i dont have the ability !

  • He supplied the epiphany damn ! dont have the ability !

  • "0.o" is the face you'll have if you don't know any theory like me!

  • "jazz musicians aren´t smart enough to have another scale in two directions"... now that´s stupid!!

  • man its called glasses....gt sum...ur face to close to guitar...

  • @latino13x3 It has nothing to do with eye sight :P. Notice how well he can get around the fret board while maintaining a straight wrist (which is preferable for any string instrument, as to not hurt yourself in the long run). I don't play with my guitar quite that high, but it is definitely not "to close" <3.

  • ... as far as the guitar, it seems to resemble a more " rockin" frame model within the "soloette" portable / travel guitar line.it also seems to have a fabric covering for the frame to look less weird.

stowell is super badass. i have seen him a few times and attended a clinic and he definitely delivers on a few levels and is extremely approachable and willing to demystify things and has clearly considered what NOT knowing something is like and HOW different people may absorb information.

  • amazing lesson

  • too technical for me...its really good for those jazz-maniac

  • great lesson man

  • Great lesson, thanks!

  • Great lesson!!!

  • tnx man

  • boooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggg
