I saw the fake Shangri-Las about two years ago open for a very real Dion. They were awful and only performed two Shangri Las songs. The rest was stuff like the Supremes and the Ronnettes. They were awful.

Something similar happened to me when I went to see "The Crystals" perform. I was only about 15 at the time (I'm 31 now) and even I could tell they were fake.

I hosted a concert at Playland in Rye, NY around 1988 that was billed as starring The Shangri-Las -- and was shocked to go backstage before the show and meet the fake quartet -- all obviously not even BORN in the '60s. Incensed, I refused to introduce them onstage as The Shangri-Las. Instead, I spoke of the REAL group and retitled the show "a tribute." Afterwards I told Fox to go to hell. BTW -- the real girls won their suit against the jerk. Sadly, Marge died of breast cancer in 1998.
It's an outrageous situation, but I have to admit I enjoy watching Margie Ganser's fury--it makes it obvious their tough-girls image wasn't just an image!
I totally remember this segment when it was first aired. The brunette in red is Betty Wiese, the one who sang on 'Leader of the Pack'; it wasn't Mary who did. They did a reunion I believe 1989 or 1990. Sadly the surviving twin passed away years later. As for the fake Shangri-Las, no one bought them. Everyone knew they were fakes.

I suggest we all bombard this agency with Emails of protest.

I saw the fake Shangri-Las about two years ago open for a very real Dion. They were awful and only performed two Shangri Las songs. The rest was stuff like the Supremes and the Ronnettes. They were awful.

Something similar happened to me when I went to see "The Crystals" perform. I was only about 15 at the time (I'm 31 now) and even I could tell they were fake.

I hosted a concert at Playland in Rye, NY around 1988 that was billed as starring The Shangri-Las -- and was shocked to go backstage before the show and meet the fake quartet -- all obviously not even BORN in the '60s. Incensed, I refused to introduce them onstage as The Shangri-Las. Instead, I spoke of the REAL group and retitled the show "a tribute." Afterwards I told Fox to go to hell. BTW -- the real girls won their suit against the jerk. Sadly, Marge died of breast cancer in 1998.

I totally remember this segment when it was first aired. The brunette in red is Betty Wiese, the one who sang on 'Leader of the Pack'; it wasn't Mary who did. Betty often didn't appear live with the girls (her choice), although she performed on all the tracks - sometimes as the lead voice. I can't believe they were only teenagers. Good on them! x

Dazz is right. It was Mary who sang lead on LEADER. Betty was supposed to sing lead, but Shadow Morton put Mary on lead, even though Betty had the better singing voice. Just like the Supremes. Flo Ballard was the original lead, but Berry Gordy put Diana Ross as the group's lead.

I think the confusion comes from the girls referring to the singer as "Betty" on the track, but it sure sounds like Mary to me. You seem to be a big Shangs fan so maybe you can tell me why they decided to say "Betty" instead of "Mary." I've always wondered that. Thanks a million for posting this!!!

I recently saw (Jan.2008) the bogus Shangri Las group and they were truly awful ! Very unprofessional- only one of the three had a "fairly decent" voice...a real waste of time going to see them!

The fake Shangri-las are still very much around. Check out the Mars Talent website. I saw these guys several years ago. The young brunette is the daughter of the older one. As you see on this page, there's a bio of the REAL Shangri-las associated with a photo of the fake ones, and these guys did indeed talk about OUR hits during their show. I suggest we all bombard this agency with Emails of protest.
