  • Tablets have been around for more than 15 years. Saying it's an iPad is absurd. Note that I have an iPad (paid $750 after add ons), so I know it sucks. Get an Android based tablet!

  • 1969? are you kidding me ?

  • @WantedTom not kidding. you must be in your 20's. watch it - one of the best movies of All Time.

  • @softcurls88 I know it's one of the best movies, but it's from 68 lol

  • Is Hal and Siri married?

  • Hm, it appears to be mirroring the display in the control center. And I don't see them touching it.

  • Whoa just had a great idea for an app. I'll probably never get to devolop it :/

  • Steve Jobs was Kid 13 old (1968) was never had a Learn Technology!!

    AWESOMEEEEE Future!!

  • I believe ZekSteve was being sarcastic and mocking Apples current lawsuits against other tablet makers that have similar sleek glass displays.

  • Arguably THE best science fiction film ever made. I fucking love this movie, I could care less about similarities to current technology.

  • Apple stole their tablet and voice control. >8(

  • 2001 is one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made, but the pacing almost puts you to sleep.

  • @southport97 The pacing is accurate, though. Space is lonely and cold, not filled with action. This is one of the only sci-fi movies that actually gives you a highly convincing taste of what space is really like.

  • even the table looks like an elongated iPhone.. :P

  • I have to say, the iPad is REALLY similar to this. But "2001: A Space Odyssey" is the greatest and arguably most influential film ever made. It's no surprise that Apple probably was at least inspired.

    P.S. 1968, not '69.

  • theres even siri in it.

  • looks like a xoom

  • Did samsung's use of this constitute copyright infringement? :D

  • This is a clear violation of apples patent. The past is slavishly copying the iPad2.

  • @Octavian88mtl This comment deserves to be a "top comment".

  • Check out the contest I found: goo.gl\8ONjl You can win iPad 2.

  • The device on the film looks like a Portable TV rather than an iPad or GalaxyTab

It is foolish to tell Apple got inspired from this.So apple,You are NOT GUILTY.

  • Apple Should Sue Arthur C Clarke its clear a violation of apples patent

  • Comment removed

  • They both couldn't watch one??

  • Kubrick went through a stargate into 2010, stole two iPads, brought them back in time, and used them in this scene, which inspired Apple to replicate the device seen in the film, leading to the creation of the iPad.

  • No sign of a touch interface in this clip, though.

  • Of course it's not an ipad. The aspect ratio isn't 4:3, it's oviously 16:9. Ipad isn't 16:9, it's 4:3.

  • @catholiccontriversy u r either a moron or an blind faith apple fan boy (in which case u still r a moron) ..16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio is not the question.its the concept that matters....apple say they are original.... how can they argue with this clip in that respect which is 40+ years old? Its like the stone age man should have patented sand cause u know all electronic equipment core is the semiconductor which is essentially processed sand/ silicon. Greedy corporates wanna establish monopoly.

  • @virgoptrex I wasn't trying to be a fanboy. I actually dispise apple and know that they stole ideas. I know the clip is 40+ years old, and know apple wasn't the first to try tablet computers, don't know first ones because It's been awhile since I read that TIME article. Oh well.

  • @virgoptrex wtf that does not even look like an ipad??? how can they claim the ipad was modeled after this?

you could say any tablet was modeled after this. That's what a tablet is. It's a small flat screen. The ipad design is different than this

  • @ArtAndSuch

just like the samsung tablets different from an ipad

  • @deviantpixelus yeah the tablet concept came long before the ipad. Apple does not claim originality on the idea of a tablet! That's stupid.

  • @ArtAndSuch Yes they do

  • They had a Commodore 64 onboard but called it Hal 9000 after the 56k dial up upgrade.

  • LOOOL.. BTW Apple stole the Design for The Macintosh Computer from the Xerox Star 8010 Computer... Apple Sucks Ass!

  • movie is 10 years older than star wars

  • @MamoDad more like Stanley Kubrick + Arthur C. Clarke = Genius overflow.

  • Those things are Samsung Galaxy Pads... Look at the aspect ratio of the screens...

  • I have a penis

  • The IPAD thingys are very cool, but you would think there would have been more advance in food tray design.

  • @PeteMaine whats wrong with the foodtrays ??

  • Kubrick the GENIUS. One of the smartest people ever to walk this Earth.

  • Now Apple will sue Kubrick's soul for copyright infringement

  • oh god..... to big for an iPad...iPad is more smart !!!!!!

Looking for STAR TREK...they use such a thing between iPhone and iPad.....

  • The heirs of Kubrick should sue Apple for the theft of intellectual property: they obviously stole the design of the iPad!

  • Kubrick era un visionario en extremo, solo le faltaban ingenieros para poder hacerlos realidad.

  • are they usinf FaceTime?? XD

  • someday apple will make the food in that movie and patent it, and sue everyone for the dehidrated food

  • Kubrick thought of everything! Does the evolutionary obelisk in 2001 remind anyone of the ipod?

  • I am confused, I thought there were Window's based tablet computer for a few years, Ipad is just another version of tablet computer. After all, touch screen computers been around for tens of years!

  • yeah but still waiting for the Marty McFly hover-board

  • take that table+the screen *taadaaa* ---> iPad

  • Why are they bothering to chew their food? :)

  • @MamoDad

Arthur C. Clarke was a freaking genius.

  • @porkchp6369 absolutely!!

  • 1968

  • E o cara da esquerda, de roupão meia e tênis....

  • 2001 : space odyssey is the most boring film ever, but still, amazing movie thus :)

  • Que tontería

  • esses aplefan vao tudo a merda bando de troxas

  • this is just a TV screen

  • @fkhoury72

    Good point !

  • @fkhoury72 If you look in the movie then one of the astronauts is carrying one of them to the table and put it there before he gets his food. Of course at the time the movie was made they had to use old tv sets to project the image, but the concept in the movie is indeed a plate to access media.

  • samsung lol

  • How about the tablet in the Disney movie " The Incredibles ":

  • itards

  • Apple is Great!!!!!!

  • I thought they were talking about the table....the table itself looks like an ipad

  • End Korea !

A fuckin' country in this world

  • @macdaddynyc

    stfu applefan!

  • Comment removed

  • fuck apple they think they make everything

  • @DiabloDave363 they do - Kubrick didn't actually make the iPad. where is his prototype?

  • You would think the designers of the PADD for Star Trek: The Next Generation would have something to say . The iPad is almost an exact copy of the hardware shown on screen. Maybe Paramount should get in on this whole lawsuit.

  • I hate discrimination and Korean people.

  • Apple products for girls, only :)

  • Just its appearence thats all thwy are suing for

  • hahaha .

  • my question ...

is Apple suing Samsung over the overall design - or its elements - or the touchscreen technology. The movie doesn't seem to display touchscreen technology, although it is very much 'implied'.

  • It's not a Pad! It's just a table-top display.

  • @TommieAitken

The're hanging over the edge of the table.

  • fuck apple!

  • Samsung Electronics is claiming in U.S. District court that Apple can not patent the iPad because a device that looks just like the iPad was used in the 1968 movie 2001.

    --

Or perhaps you do not understand the argument being made here.

  • 0:28 looks like an iPod nano 4G ! Thumbs up if you agree!

  • Those tablets look so much better than an ipad too, with the screen being the entire thing and just a very tiny dashboard on the bottom. I want one.

  • The problem is that Apple think that anyone who competes with them is illegal. The solution is to stop buying their stuff.

  • they were even using facetime WOW...

  • Well they don't actually TOUCH the 'iPads' which means they're pretty much TV-screens. Quit trying to be Apple.

  • @Pauolin Oh so Apple invented tablets. Don't make me laugh.

  • @tuxdaniel That's not really what I meant.

  • apple didn't exist in 1969

  • Nice crazy Korean joke hahaha

  • So, Korean admit the origin of tablet is America, huh? Wow, it's giant step! lol

  • iPad? Nossa, deste tamanhão? Não duvido nada que a Apple copia coisas de filmes de ficção, afinal, o conceito de ebook não se aplica totalmente ao iPad... Senão seria ponto pra Amazon (kindle).

  • It's like claiming a patent on the rectangle! So now we have touch scrolling, how many sensible/intuitive ways are for it to behave? Probably not to many. I mean do you expect it to jump randomly, go to quick, go too slow, not behave like a real physical thing whith some acceleration/deceleration? Now how many ways to implement it with programming... probably millions, and that is the rub.

  • ... My point being, original creations where the implementation was really hard are deserving of patents, while design does not. Salvidor dali said "Those who imitate nothing produce nothing." It would mean that the scroll bar on every program would need to pay a royalty. Drop down menus... you know at one time these things were novel. Seriously this video shows even in 1969 the physical design of a flat computer is pretty limited.

  • It used to be that graphic design was only protected insofar as leading to the confusion of a product with another product. Patents only protected an implementation not the end result. A lot of what people see as "Apple" was not created by them but rather assembled and improved. The kernel of OS X, purchased externally, CUPS their printing system purchased externally, their gui first created by Xerox... even the mouse xerox again.

  • no joke, they claim a trademark on the letter "i". for real

  • Fuck apple like they arent rich enough..

  • Funny, an IBM idea used in Samsung's defense...

  • Good defense, but...

SAMSUNG try this -> Chewbacca defense

    is very very effective! ;-)

  • down with the apple...crap company that does not want competition..just stupid monopoly..Let the Andriod Liveeee :)

  • Cr-apple

  • korean hoihoi

    lol

  • Interesting how the table has the same style as the iPad - black with a silver line around it

  • SUMCHON

  • World should learn Korean's mentality. How ugly they are.

  • Did the American also understand a national character of South Korea?

Japan is suffered from South Korea such a false charge

  • You never see them pick them to use them or move them at all. They are in exactly the same position on the table relative to the ends, angled exactly the same. I believe they are static attatchments to the table, fixed in place but able to rotate and/or tilt to some degree. They are part of the set, not props.

  • @robaronin: well obviously. In 1968 LCD didn't exist (screen are probably just thin sheets with projectors underneath... Flat CRT didn't exist either), nor it was possible to cram al the tech inside such thin devices. Anyway if a patent for such device exist, even on paper, it's all that matters.

  • To all those commenting on Kubrick's genius, and foresight - While he is a great director, Arthur Clark wrote this story. Kubrick wrote the screenplay.

  • @MrBucketBot

True. But the device(s) in question is not mentioned in either AC Clarke adaption of the film nor in the original short story (or was it a novella?) The Sentinel. It was Kubrick and his prod designer Tony Masters (Bond films, UFO and Space:1999) who came up with those 'flat screen" device Dave and Frank looking at.

  • Koreans should not appear in the world of economy and in the sports.

Stay in your peninsula ! Crazy insane people

  • Except it wasn't invented for another 10 years.

  • They can't distinguish reality from delusions.

We Japanese have been suffering from their pathology for a century.

  • this is going to become viral.....(i still dont get the whole viral thing)

  • Looks like me having lunch today.

Stanley Kubrick is a freaking genius.

  • @MamoDad Was...Kubrick *was* a genius. Kubrick was also murdered after he released the movie "Eyes Wide Shut". Kubrick exposed too many secrets about how politicians, bankers, masons, religious types, and other social parasites spend their leisure time. Illicit drugs, cult activity, orgies, child sex slavery, etc. Turns out these scumbags don't like their dirty laundry being aired out for the world to see. Kubrick paid the price for his lack of vision.

  • It is just flat display....

  • スゲー

    iPadそのものじゃん

  • @konnyakumochi

    は?在日キムチが

  • that BlackBerry! with Flash and they can do Multi-Tasking!

  • wow! they are using FACETIME during that TIME!

  • You would think that "Tablet Wars" would be more entertaining than this...

  • When i was a kid, people used to say "Have the chopsticks with your right hand". If you grew up left handed ,people call you "Giccho".

  • One thing: #LOL

  • This is how Samsung trys to "kill" apple? thats stupid, but you can see how desperate samsung is!

Good Luck with ur "Samsung Galaxy Tab II 10.4 S2 ACE" samsung!

  • ほんとだー。これはipadだ。

  • That's an awesome prediction given the movie is from 1968. Someone correct me but I think the first ideas/concepts for tablets are dated 2001.

  • Wait, did someone just state this movie from 1968 ripped off a Star Trek TV show from the late '80s/early '90s, and even added "look it up" to reinforce this?

  • Heuristics are not patent able .. non unique

  • Since they did not have the technology to have a flat screen in 1968, affordable to the movie studio, my guess is that they were props built into the tabletops so the actors could not have picked them up and held them. Thus, this seen was showing them to be too busy eating; a not reason to pick them up or interact with them at all for that matter. The interaction plays a bigger role into the iPad idea than just a thin rectangular viewing screen.

  • @mcsew2k, the point is apple's patent lawsuit isn't about the functionality of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but of the *appearance* of the tablet. They are suing because of a rectangular shape with a prominent screen.

The point of this video is to show that this "design" has been in public culture for a long time, it's not something that Apple brilliantly "innovated". The only thing they did before anyone else was to file a patent, nothing more.

  • @easuter

    Hey

Then why filthy Korean maker samsung haven't put in to sales for the first in the world?

    Are you insane?

  • Yeah well, Stanley Kubrick stole that idea from Gene Roddenberry, because those are actually the tablets they used on TNG to look up research and watch their mail, so, yeah, Wil Wheaton's a billionaire, bitches. And yes that sentence made sense in my crazy, fucked up, twisted head. If you don't understand why, then try learning less.

  • All it is is a monitor, not an IPad.

  • @tsblondelover1 you're kidding, right? "all it is is a monitor, not an iPad?" what's an iPad if it's not just a monitor? isn't that the whole point?

  • En la pelicula la maquina del tiempo año 2002 en el futuro el viajero entra en una biblioteca digital pero antes de eso hay unos niños que tienen una tableta digital en sus manos.

  • 'Apple" is retarted

  • @MrBratkenSolov Oh, the irony!

  • L0L N0W H0LYW00D'S G0NNA BE THE G0DFATHER 0F AL0TTA THINGS IN THE FUTURE // H0LYW00D'S WHERE THE ACTI0N=!!

  • There is one little problem the date. I saw 2001 almost a 12 times when I live in Tulas, OK. We moved to NJ in July of 68, so I know the date is wrong. the movie never made an sinse til i read the paperback book in 71. it also one of my fav movie, that and outland.

  • lol more bollocks, you take a small flat object, project some moving images on it

right that looks like an ipad, sure, crazy peeps, lol

  • (I don't know if this was said but...) This clip never shows the astronauts touching or interfacing with the tv screen pads. That's kind of a big part of the whole tablet concept.

  • Next Apple will be suing grocery stores for selling apples.

  • @HyaenidE2

    ばっかじゃねーのお前

  • @HyaenidE2 damn.. funniest comment i ever came across in utube

  • They need to get themselves a smart case so they can stand it upright.

  • Thumbs up if you'd like to see two iPads playing the exact same thing at the exact same time.

  • You guys are wasting your time arguing about this.

  • Comment removed

  • Im afraid i cant let you do that steve jobs

  • Jobs, you damn thief.

  • Why would two guys sitting literally five feet from each other not just watch the video from one iPad instead of individually watching from two? Even if they had their own, it just seems like a subtle dick move to act like you'd rather watch it on yours than just watch it from your friend's. Besides, there would be an awful echo effect that would ruin the experience on it's own. Feel free to use this as your rebuttal Apple.

  • HAL = IBM

  • yeah facetime back in "2001" :D

  • love all the apple haters. #NerdHerd

  • After this video Apple will pay a fine of 500 million dollar.

  • Look, the writer was Arthur C Clarke and he was a true visionary. He spoke of Satellite communication over 40 years ago. I attended one of his lectures at Georgia Tech and he referred to something like our internet today back then , plus hand held computer..hard for this young society to relate to. So I believe Apple, Gates, all of these people were influenced by him...

  • @edanchilders they weren't influenced by shit, it's just an obvious route. If anything they would be influenced by TV's, as sets are always getting thinner and smaller, so why not make one that fits in your palm and connects you to internet and games? It's just a screen, there's no design or inspiration going on there. That's how Clark "envisioned" it is because he knew technology would be able to do that someday and of course it would happen.

  • Hahaha !!!!!!!

    Great

  • Apple sucks and you're an asshole if you buy anything from them. Fuck you Jobs.

  • This is indeed it is ridiculous. But this video remembers me of the fact I still didn't watched this movie yet, and I really have to do that tomorrow. Thank you, mr. septemberX!

  • Who gives a shit its just a goddamn big iPhone sold as a computer

  • SAMSUNG!

  • This whole thing is LOLable. Even if it were even close - and those are clearly bigger than the iPad I know - there's no way to prove ownership of technology that didn't even exist.

  • Apple: The cult of personality.

Not that Apple doesn't make good products, they just rely on a "you-buy-a-new-device-every-year" model, hell I'm still using an iPod Touch 2g.

  • The design of ipad is a rectangle with a screen in the middle. Big deal. It's so ridiculous!

  • Вот это да в 67 году додуматься до планшетов. Я уже давно замечаю что фантасты очень и очень близки к правде! Вот только на чём они основвываются? Неужели у них машина времени есть?

  • Well its true, doesn't the prop and set designers of this movie, and not Apple deserve to be compresentated for their own designs? Apple didn't create or even think of the first "tablet form" factor. It's redicious that they are suing Samsung. This defense is so simply, even a child can understand.

  • @thugbephine "This defense is so simple, even a child can understand."

True, yet many people here do not seem to understand it. For example "there's no way to prove ownership of technology that didn't even exist." No informed person believes tablet computers existed in 1968. The point was that the potential design for devices with a certain functionality can be quite limited (eg tablets), and therefore Apple should not have been able to sue Samsung for a design that was so self-evident.

  • I want an ODYSSEY Pad! please!
