Tablets have been around for more than 15 years. Saying it's an iPad is absurd. Note that I have an iPad (paid $750 after add ons), so I know it sucks. Get an Android based tablet!
@southport97 The pacing is accurate, though. Space is lonely and cold, not filled with action. This is one of the only sci-fi movies that actually gives you a highly convincing taste of what space is really like.
I have to say, the iPad is REALLY similar to this. But "2001: A Space Odyssey" is the greatest and arguably most influential film ever made. It's no surprise that Apple probably was at least inspired.
Kubrick went through a stargate into 2010, stole two iPads, brought them back in time, and used them in this scene, which inspired Apple to replicate the device seen in the film, leading to the creation of the iPad.
@catholiccontriversy u r either a moron or an blind faith apple fan boy (in which case u still r a moron) ..16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio is not the question.its the concept that matters....apple say they are original.... how can they argue with this clip in that respect which is 40+ years old? Its like the stone age man should have patented sand cause u know all electronic equipment core is the semiconductor which is essentially processed sand/ silicon. @virgoptrex I wasn't trying to be a fanboy. I actually dispise apple and know that they stole ideas. I know the clip is 40+ years old, and know apple wasn't the first to try tablet computers, don't know first ones because It's been awhile since I read that TIME article. Oh well.

@fkhoury72 If you look in the movie then one of the astronauts is carrying one of them to the table and put it there before he gets his food. Of course at the time the movie was made they had to use old tv sets to project the image, but the concept in the movie is indeed a plate to access media.

Apple's not saying they invented the tablet, they're saying, we invented specific technology that makes the tablet function in a certain manner. Samsung's argument is laughable at best.
You would think the designers of the PADD for Star Trek: The Next Generation would have something to say . The iPad is almost an exact copy of the hardware shown on screen. Maybe Paramount should get in on this whole lawsuit.
is Apple suing Samsung over the overall design - or its elements - or the touchscreen technology. The movie doesn't seem to display touchscreen technology, although it is very much 'implied'.
Samsung Electronics is claiming in U.S. District court that Apple can not patent the iPad because a device that looks just like the iPad was used in the 1968 movie 2001.
--
Or perhaps you do not understand the argument being made here.
iPad? Nossa, deste tamanhão? Não duvido nada que a Apple copia coisas de filmes de ficção, afinal, o conceito de ebook não se aplica totalmente ao iPad... Senão seria ponto pra Amazon (kindle).
It's like claiming a patent on the rectangle! So now we have touch scrolling, how many sensible/intuitive ways are for it to behave? Probably not to many. I mean do you expect it to jump randomly, go to quick, go too slow, not behave like a real physical thing whith some acceleration/deceleration? Now how many ways to implement it with programming... probably millions, and that is the rub.
... My point being, original creations where the implementation was really hard are deserving of patents, while design does not. Salvidor dali said "Those who imitate nothing produce nothing." It would mean that the scroll bar on every program would need to pay a royalty. Drop down menus... you know at one time these things were novel. Seriously this video shows even in 1969 the physical design of a flat computer is pretty limited.
It used to be that graphic design was only protected insofar as leading to the confusion of a product with another product. Patents only protected an implementation not the end result. A lot of what people see as "Apple" was not created by them but rather assembled and improved. The kernel of OS X, purchased externally, CUPS their printing system purchased externally, their gui first created by Xerox... even the mouse xerox again.
You never see them pick them to use them or move them at all. They are in exactly the same position on the table relative to the ends, angled exactly the same. I believe they are static attatchments to the table, fixed in place but able to rotate and/or tilt to some degree. They are part of the set, not props.
@robaronin: well obviously. In 1968 LCD didn't exist (screen are probably just thin sheets with projectors underneath... Flat CRT didn't exist either), nor it was possible to cram al the tech inside such thin devices. Anyway if a patent for such device exist, even on paper, it's all that matters.
To all those commenting on Kubrick's genius, and foresight - While he is a great director, Arthur Clark wrote this story. Kubrick wrote the screenplay.
True. But the device(s) in question is not mentioned in either AC Clarke adaption of the film nor in the original short story (or was it a novella?) The Sentinel. It was Kubrick and his prod designer Tony Masters (Bond films, UFO and Space:1999) who came up with those 'flat screen" device Dave and Frank looking at.
@MamoDad Was...Kubrick *was* a genius. Kubrick was also murdered after he released the movie "Eyes Wide Shut". Kubrick exposed too many secrets about how politicians, bankers, masons, religious types, and other social parasites spend their leisure time. Illicit drugs, cult activity, orgies, child sex slavery, etc. Turns out these scumbags don't like their dirty laundry being aired out for the world to see. Kubrick paid the price for his lack of vision.
Wait, did someone just state this movie from 1968 ripped off a Star Trek TV show from the late '80s/early '90s, and even added "look it up" to reinforce this?
Since they did not have the technology to have a flat screen in 1968, affordable to the movie studio, my guess is that they were props built into the tabletops so the actors could not have picked them up and held them. Thus, this seen was showing them to be too busy eating; a not reason to pick them up or interact with them at all for that matter. The interaction plays a bigger role into the iPad idea than just a thin rectangular viewing screen.
@mcsew2k, the point is apple's patent lawsuit isn't about the functionality of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but of the *appearance* of the tablet. They are suing because of a rectangular shape with a prominent screen.
The point of this video is to show that this "design" has been in public culture for a long time, it's not something that Apple brilliantly "innovated". The only thing they did before anyone else was to file a patent, nothing more.
Yeah well, Stanley Kubrick stole that idea from Gene Roddenberry, because those are actually the tablets they used on TNG to look up research and watch their mail, so, yeah, Wil Wheaton's a billionaire, bitches. And yes that sentence made sense in my crazy, fucked up, twisted head. If you don't understand why, then try learning less.
I'm sure researchers at apples development team (aka legal team) have just noticed the wheel has not had a patent yet. Maybe next week none of us on this planet can have transport whilst apple debate it in court.
En la pelicula la maquina del tiempo año 2002 en el futuro el viajero entra en una biblioteca digital pero antes de eso hay unos niños que tienen una tableta digital en sus manos.
There is one little problem the date. I saw 2001 almost a 12 times when I live in Tulas, OK. We moved to NJ in July of 68, so I know the date is wrong. the movie never made an sinse til i read the paperback book in 71. it also one of my fav movie, that and outland.
(I don't know if this was said but...) This clip never shows the astronauts touching or interfacing with the tv screen pads. That's kind of a big part of the whole tablet concept.
Why would two guys sitting literally five feet from each other not just watch the video from one iPad instead of individually watching from two? Even if they had their own, it just seems like a subtle dick move to act like you'd rather watch it on yours than just watch it from your friend's. Besides, there would be an awful echo effect that would ruin the experience on it's own. Feel free to use this as your rebuttal Apple.
Look, the writer was Arthur C Clarke and he was a true visionary. He spoke of Satellite communication over 40 years ago. I attended one of his lectures at Georgia Tech and he referred to something like our internet today back then , plus hand held computer..hard for this young society to relate to. So I believe Apple, Gates, all of these people were influenced by him...
@edanchilders they weren't influenced by shit, it's just an obvious route. If anything they would be influenced by TV's, as sets are always getting thinner and smaller, so why not make one that fits in your palm and connects you to internet and games? It's just a screen, there's no design or inspiration going on there. That's how Clark "envisioned" it is because he knew technology would be able to do that someday and of course it would happen.
This is indeed it is ridiculous. But this video remembers me of the fact I still didn't watched this movie yet, and I really have to do that tomorrow. Thank you, mr. septemberX!
This whole thing is LOLable. Even if it were even close - and those are clearly bigger than the iPad I know - there's no way to prove ownership of technology that didn't even exist.
Вот это да в 67 году додуматься до планшетов. Я уже давно замечаю что фантасты очень и очень близки к правде! Вот только на чём они основвываются? Неужели у них машина времени есть?
Well its true, doesn't the prop and set designers of this movie, and not Apple deserve to be compresentated for their own designs? Apple didn't create or even think of the first "tablet form" factor. It's redicious that they are suing Samsung. This defense is so simply, even a child can understand.
@thugbephine "This defense is so simple, even a child can understand."
True, yet many people here do not seem to understand it. For example "there's no way to prove ownership of technology that didn't even exist." No informed person believes tablet computers existed in 1968. The point was that the potential design for devices with a certain functionality can be quite limited (eg tablets), and therefore Apple should not have been able to sue Samsung for a design that was so self-evident.
Tablets have been around for more than 15 years. Saying it's an iPad is absurd. Note that I have an iPad (paid $750 after add ons), so I know it sucks. Get an Android based tablet!

There is one little problem the date. I saw 2001 almost a 12 times when I live in Tulas, OK. We moved to NJ in July of 68, so I know the date is wrong. the movie never made an sinse til i read the paperback book in 71. it also one of my fav movie, that and outland.

lol more bollocks, you take a small flat object, project some moving images on it

(I don't know if this was said but...) This clip never shows the astronauts touching or interfacing with the tv screen pads. That's kind of a big part of the whole tablet concept.

Thumbs up if you'd like to see two iPads playing the exact same thing at the exact same time.

So I believe Apple, Gates, all of these people were influenced by him...
edanchilders 5 months ago
@edanchilders they weren't influenced by shit, it's just an obvious route. If anything they would be influenced by TV's, as sets are always getting thinner and smaller, so why not make one that fits in your palm and connects you to internet and games? It's just a screen, there's no design or inspiration going on there. That's how Clark "envisioned" it is because he knew technology would be able to do that someday and of course it would happen.

This whole thing is LOLable. Even if it were even close - and those are clearly bigger than the iPad I know - there's no way to prove ownership of technology that didn't even exist.

Apple: The cult of personality.
Not that Apple doesn't make good products, they just rely on a "you-buy-a-new-device-every-year" model, hell I'm still using an iPod Touch 2g.

The design of ipad is a rectangle with a screen in the middle. Big deal. It's so ridiculous!

Well its true, doesn't the prop and set designers of this movie, and not Apple deserve to be compresentated for their own designs? Apple didn't create or even think of the first "tablet form" factor. It's redicious that they are suing Samsung. This defense is so simply, even a child can understand.
thugbephine 5 months ago 4
@thugbephine "This defense is so simple, even a child can understand."
True, yet many people here do not seem to understand it. For example "there's no way to prove ownership of technology that didn't even exist." No informed person believes tablet computers existed in 1968. The point was that the potential design for devices with a certain functionality can be quite limited (eg tablets), and therefore Apple should not have been able to sue Samsung for a design that was so self-evident.
