Personally, I like Gran Torino a lot better than Slumdog Millionaire. The first 1/3 or 1/2 of it was too intense, intensity being something you would'nt really expect in this movie (at least not that violent). It was definitely unpredictable in a good way, but you probably could've summarized that whole movie down into a 30-minute short film.
