This is an example of our screwed up trade policies. Flex your power and stop buying at WF. And, don't forget to get after Congress to either inspect imported foods with the same scrutiny as our home grown. Easy to see how our own farmers need those subsidies when they have such regs to contend with as well as inequitable standards for foreign produce/products.
Our governments are evil they don't give a crap about the people the only thing they care about is themselves their family and the money ! It is greedy and selfish .
I already knew about this. They specifically mark what they can get locally. For produce this is always fresh. I knew the frozen organics can come from any where. The people who aren't paying attention to the products they buy are at fault, not WFM. At least in my opinion. It isn't feasible to think that all things are organic AND local; that's why the store has specific, and separate, markers for both.
I eat all organic foods and have frequented Whole Foods. There isn't one in my area but is currently being built - and I was looking forward to it. Now I am leery and disgusted. It's time to get active on better regulation!!
@SageShows Better regulations????? Did you really mean to say that?? Doesn't a consumer have some responsability to what they buy? Statements and consumers who believe regulations are the answer are the reasons small farmers are going out of business. Take responsability and find producers you can trust.
like they all say "ugh China" its a disgrace; like in south park when there all buying this native-american stuff and the its from mexico, ugh mexico. hypocrites.
Just as our Government, spurred by Giant Corporations and funneled particularly through Republican politicians, cuts back on consumer protections, agencies and enforcement officials..

This year, Whole Foods caved on GMO foods--so at least you can trust that they're honest about not being fully organic. As for television--who trusts them anymore?
Back in the 80's, a news channel would pay to have the food tested for pesticides. Maybe the NRDC, CSPI and the Environmental Working Group can chip in to have the food checked and release the findings.
Anyway, Whole Foods has a lot of explaining to do. It is interesting though, that the word "China" immediately makes people suspicious. It's a rep they've earned.
C'mon people, their food contains carbon molecules- isn't that organic enough for you? ;-)
part of being an informed consumer is taking the time to read the labels on everything you buy. if it's in a package, you read the ingredients. DUH. don't blame whole foods for your own laziness, or better yet, buy fresh veggies and freeze them yourself. or even better, grow it yourself.
This is such an old video, likely when the anti-China sentiment was high over the various reported issues. I base this assumption on the fact that the report is ONLY TELLING US WHOLE FOODS is selling imported stuff from China. It's not reporting people have gotten sick. It's not telling us that the quality of the vegetables are bad. It's "WF is importing stuff from China and we don't know how good it is".
People who want to hate on China can go right ahead. But let's back it up with fact
@smcoach41 well the 'facts' are that in China a corporation can pretty much make/ sell anything with toxic poison and NO ONE will hold them accountable or make them pay when you die or your kid gets brain damage from lead-paint coated toys, moron
A point that is missing in this is NOT whether or not China is following the organic rules, it's that YOU'RE BUYING SPINACH FROM PEOPLE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLANET. I mean, importing high-tech things I understand, or say, rare earth minerals. But freaking SPINACH? Grow it yourself or buy it from the farmer's market, people. Report may seems biased, but Whole Foods is indeed misleading!,Their response to this report says they offer country of origin on the back even though they dont by law have to, but The 2002 Farm Bill and the 2008 Farm Bill require that retailers inform consumers of the country of origin of all perishable agricultural commodities beginning Sept 30, 2008.... so Joe Dickson of WF has this wrong.
I just checked all my 365 stuff, including frozen vegetables, and they're all from the USA, with one being from France. This is a really biased report and bad journalism IMO. I don't support importing from China AT ALL, but at least give a unbiased report. This makes it sound like the entire Whole Foods store is imported from China, when in fact it's probably only these 3-5 frozen vegetables.
A very lame report. Everyone knows the country of origin is on all pre-packaged food. Everyone knows China is a communist country (therefore not allowing OUTSIDE watch groups and certifiers to function) and is very circumspect in the products they produce. Everyone knows that every major grocery store in this country sell foods from china. This a report about China not Whole Foods. There is no perfect grocery. I visit three different stores to satisfy my food shopping. That includes a local ma&pa
There is no control over Organic's in this country. we should take a look at England or Australia and how they do it....Private controller's are bought and paid for....
I am already almost bankrupt, thanks to a few fraudulent Chinese stocks listed on NASDAQ, with books audited (cooked) by big US accounting firms in China (CCME for one). But I am sure their food is organic, as they do not use septic tanks.
@epsiloneon I doubt that, considering that GMOs are so new that no one knows the short and long-term effects of their consumption. Also, tell your argument to those that are starving.
Boy, this is such a rhetorical report that it gives me pause. Seldom are things so black and white, but the media likes to promote that idea. I'm sure not everything from China is suspect, and I'm also sure that finding true organic or non-GMO in the US isn't easy. The point is, no one really knows. And if anyone does, they're not talking. It's a crapshoot, folks. You can never know for sure what goes on your plate.
@DesmosediciAlice Are you sure about that? There could be small parts in TVs and electronics that are made it China. Apple's iPads and iPhones are manufactured in China. These people who are "anti-Chinese" products need to open their eyes. China makes a ton of stuff, whether you like it or not.
This is bs if you actually look at whats coming out of america you'd want raw beef from africa ... Of course this would be on the news to stop organic because the big companys that arent making money have to do something about it
I'm a foreigner who started shopping at Whole Foods when I arrived in the US. I was shocked at the amount of unnecessary packaging that Whole Foods uses. Sure, you can recycle some of it it but it takes energy and resources to produce and then recycle that packaging. Do we really need both a layer of paper AND a plastic baggie to wrap up a few slices of deli meat? I think many Americans do not realise how much packaging they waste.
What nonsense. The assumption that products produced in the USA are better is just wrong. I mean, who wants to drive a Chevy?!?! We buy imported products because the quality of domestic goods is generally inferior.
@irishmankentuckian amen my irish brother, started my 'urban' garden about 8 years ago and now grow about 60% of all the food I eat, and it would be more if I had room for a small greenhouse!
please yall, stop saying stupid things like the reporter in this video. yea its a California blend, doesnt mean itll be from California. its just like there are Swedish meatballs in America. and the way whole foods knows the food thats organic is because there are whole foods employees who go work on the farms that we have contracts with. theres a reason that whole foods is the only organic certified market.
I think yous are missing the main point, who cares if you know its organic or not. You are raping your country's own vegetable producers who i'm sure are perfectly capable of supplying the demand. You are simply putting american farmers out of business if you by these foods.
@kikimakai Agreed. Anyone who modifies their habits as a result of a 3 year old video is ignorant. Do your own research people, don't rely on some video you saw on YouTube.
I don't understand the uproar about things being from China..... Just because it contains a product there doesn't mean it's any less quality. Just because America doesn't agree with it's communist government, the media skews everything. Farmers in China need to make a living too. Farmers in China care about growing great food too.
@smilesgirl17 i don't think it's about communist gov't. It's the simple fact that the packaging says "california blend" that is dishonest. Wholefoods should happily display "china" in large print on the packaging.
Given the amount of contaminated food that's been from China lately, wholefoods new people would be skeptical about buying organic food from china.
ok i cant stop.....yeah...i mean....what the hell would the chinese know about growing organically....'traditional chinese medicine' BAH!!!!! 4000 years of history? YEAH BUT WHAT BOOKS HAVE THEY READ LATELY!!!! acupuncture/accupressure.....shiatsu massage....all fads!!!
in other words youre a fucking idiot who doesnt read the ingredients. was it on the label that its made in china? then stfu and wear a diaper if you piss yourself
Lmao!! These reporters and investigators are stupid. Whole foods probably the only company that has the balls to label it "made in china." "California blend" does not mean it's from California. Go look at a product that says "Thai stir-fry" sauce. It probably labels U.S.A or China. Think people. It is time you read what you eat and understand what you are eating.
@chaboiz I agree if your that stupid today to not look into what your eating its your problem that is the point of choice but people will see this and the dumass in them will kick in. Oh yeah people support Farmers Market.
Is it so completely inconceivable that there could be a legit organic farm in China? Yes, oversight is lax over there, but that doesn't mean it's non-existent. Those farmers save money wherever they can. If you told them that they could sell their product for slightly more and didn't have to buy pesticide they'd love that.
thats because China 'owns' Whole Foods food. The Whole Foods in San Mateo. doesn't even have English newspapers...all Chinese papers. I've complained but they don't care. the "3rd party accredited agency' is China government . The fox is watching the henhouse for sure.
Do you have any follow up to if anything has changed with "Whole Foods"?
I will have to check the local packaging to see if our food is coming from China. I know we are importing more food then we export and we used to be able to feed the world.
"As of this summer (2010), we are no longer sourcing any of our Whole Foods Market 365 Everyday Value food products from China EXCEPT for frozen edamame (shelled and unshelled, organic and conventional). This means that out of more than 2,000 365 Everyday Value products right now, only ten are from China. These products include tea and frozen vegetables. We will be selling through the remaining stock of six of those over the summer, and the edamame will be the only one remaining at that time"WFM
Or maybe people who don't want to eat uber-processed foods and want to avoid all the additives, preservatives, artificial flavorings, dies, HFCS, and mercury laden in all the products that ignorant rednecks buy at wal-mart.
What being liberal has to do with it is beyond me. Maybe we have too much respect for ourselves to consume what is being pitched to you as "food."
@thomasward00 funny you say that because you probably buy foods that are in part subsidized by the government (anything with corn). I'm a liberal and I wouldnt shop at whole foods, they might as well be a fancy costco for how they run everything. I'd rather just shop at costco and get organic when I can from a local chain co-op.
I bought some organic foods and washed them with high alkaline water.I got the grease stuff which is pesticides and preservatives in the water. Is there a law that says the stores can't spray this stuff on the organic product? How do we know if this is not done? The product I got was US certified. You can test this by getting the foods wet and if it feels slippery it has been sprayed.
BULLSHOT! (pun) the government launched another war, like the war on drugs called the war on health. HEALTHY FOOD LEADS TO MALNUTRITION!!! lol i shop at whole foods, but SERIOUSLY, google: ORTHOREXIA NERVOSA
grow your own food than you know its organic with no pesticides, no gmo and its not from china may be alot easier once you get the garden started whether its indoors, outdoors or green house.
so READ what you buy. motto: buy locally and organic or grow it yourself!
china cant afford manufactured fertilizer... therefore it can be categorized as "organic." but considering the state of china's rivers & air pollution, can you honestly say that is safe??
This is what happens when you are so deeply in debt to one master. China owns our govt because our govt needs to be a monica lewisnsky to china to keep them loaning money to us.
Whole Foods god is money we need to hit them where it hurts, in their bottom line. BOYCOTT folks, BOYCOTT!
Whole Foods god is money, starting when you read this, Go in and buy less and let them know why. The only thing corrupt companies like whole foods understand is the bottom line, so that is where we MUST hit them.
I will no longer shop at Whole Foods. They know what they are importing, they know it is not organic, and they are charging premium prices. If they actually purchased certified organic foods from U.S. farms, they would significantly reduce their profit margin. Once they see a significant reduction in income, they will either need to use U.S. certified products, or go out of business.
@meneaitomania except the food thats labelled organic is organic. there are whole foods employees that go to the farms we have contracts with to work and check it all out. and there prices really are not too high, how about you actually go there and read where the different foods are from, youll see that they arnt full of shit
Whole foods Store is a racist store and I will never give them my money. They hate minorities, trust me. Overpriced and not real friendly at all. Listen to me now or pay later... Tell everyone to not shop there they will get you believe me! Don't say I warned you. "F" WholeFoods! Not worth it!
Heard good thing about Trader Joes... they help a pastor friend of mine feed the homeless each week with a ton of donated food. [Unlike Whole Foods who I used to watch dumping loads of 'good' items into the bins in the back]
Yeah, this doesnt surprise me... not everything in there is necessarily healthy for you either. [ie., potato chips... I could only find one brand years back that was actually good for you, or as good as having a potato chip can get] ;)
@dAlen7 Those bins in the back are for compost. WF does this to reduce the amount of waste in landfills. All edible waste is donated to local food kitchens. The store in my neighborhood feeds almost 500 people a week with this system. Do some research and check your facts. Don't just assume because someone is dumping stuff in a bin that you know what is going on.
Their owner opposed Obamacare and what do you expect from the media corrupted by a dedication to propping up the current regime. ITeam will wish the Government provides us food and that is not soon off. FDA is corrupt to the core and in bed with industry. You do not play ball with them, you become a target. Bottom line government cannot monitor all products and any faith in them should also include a golden calf in your daily worship.
@lonhosford John Mackey Opposed Obamacare because his standpoint is that the money should be used to educate the public on healthy eating not paying for diet related diseases. Its common sense... treat the problem not the symptoms.
money spent on food and money spent on healthcare are inversely related.
This just goes to show when a company becomes too big they end up selling out. I remember when Whole Foods bought Mrs Gooches, which was mostly organic. That was a sad day! Mrs Gooches was privately owned and operated. The more Whole Foods stores I see the more I know it has been co opted. Just tonight I went to Whole Foods to pick up some incidentals. it ended up costing 166.00, no meat, not much of anything really, some fruit, wine, milk, yogurt, no vitamins, what cost me much??????
Great work, guys! Now, that's the kind of journalism I'm talkin' about! I just love when big companies like this get caught with their image around their ankles.
Why does whole foods buy so much food from China? They permit them to use a USDA stamp on the food without actually checking it. You should be ashamed WHOLE FOODS!

Whats worse, food grown in China's inorganic air or spinach grown on a California organic farms where the migrant workers crap in the field.
It would be nice if some company would do Mass spectrum analysis of random samples of subscribing food products and publish exactly what we are eating. I think I might pay a little more for certified "Mass Spectrum Analysis Pure" food provided our corrupt government didn't have anything to do with it. We see how the FDA and Monsanto are in bed together.
this is all fucking bull shit whole foods is great and you don't have to buy the 365 brand anyways and the people they interview are a bunch of dumb bitches, shit the U.S can't even control e coli in spinach! food from china is fine because every dumb fucking american uses or consumes made in china products and no one has companied before
Pretty subpar reporting. They didn't even bother to look at their fresh produce which is probably all from North America. Still a good bit of information to spread, but do the whole picture, not some "OMG WHOLE FOODS SELLZ CHINA VEGERBLS AZ ORGANIK"
What is scarier and is the use of neurotoxic canola oil in many of Whole Foods products and the gevernment encouraged use of canola oil.
Also, the government does not require that labels list the use of GMO foods. GMO foods have not been properly tested and their approval was besed on political cooperation with the GMO food producers
Whole foods needs to insure that "Organic" labled products are actually that. Their excuses are unacceptable. But the government could correct this if they wanted to. But they don't care either..
lame reporting job tho, all speculative. they didn't even take the time to test the food for pesticides - which would have been a very easy way to make this "investigative report" more credible. catering to racist/nationalist fears makes for cheap sensationalist tv.
@superqueerkiss Shut up! You probably work for WF and do not give a shit about the jobs that "American Won't Do" according to that loser GWB, so buy your China Made, slave labor food and while your at it, learn Chinese. You may need it some day.
@ superqueerkiss, I agree. After I saw this video, I went to WFMkt and looked at each of the packages of frozen veg's and fruits. I saw only 1 that was marked, "Product of China", and that was the Mixed Asian Vegetables. The others, organic and not organic, were products of USA, Mexico, Canada, etc. Sensationalism is what our media does best. I am not convinced that all reporters actually do a full investigation of the information they broadcast. (and I do not work for WFMkt).
More assurance that assurance logos on food packagin are worthless.
Let's watch everything on Earth get so fucked up until it doesn't matter if you know where your food comes from, cause everything will be too fucked up backwards.
For all you know run-off full of lead from China's electronics "recycling" city, or filth runoff from China's cat-and-dog meat city contaminated the food. At least on your own continent you might get an answer easier than food grown for you on the other side of the planet. What kind of a nation whores all it's production capabilites to another country, and a totalitarian communist/new capitalist one at that?
The problem with this is that the certifying agency usually never visits the actual farms in China. They simply get a certificate saying the farm meets USDA standards from whoever the farm hires to inspect their farm, and trust it.
There is SO much mis-information in this program that I do not have the time and space to point to all of it. There are problems with Whole Foods; the owner bought hundreds of independent natural/organic stores and consolidated them.
If you want the reality on organic food become a member of Organic Consumers Association.. Do not be fooled by propaganda about China. It is no worse than US Agribusiness (once agriculture) These people have poisoned the food supply for the last fifty years.
@GwenAYF UR Insane if you think there is no difference between products from China and USA. Yes, there are many problems with US stuff but at least there is some form of quality control. Do some research yourself on Chinese products and foods and don't just believe what some site tells you. I have friends from China who have told me horror stories about stuff that goes on there. Not everything is a conspiracy.
I, too, sense a rush to produce a "sensational" TV exposé for their broadcast. I have indeed done some research and I agree with GwenAYF that, while WF no doubt has its problems, and certainly Chinese agriculture is almost not regulated at all, our domestic agriculture production has serious and shocking problems, too. You have to know where your food is coming from, bottom line.
I am a Chinese,In my country, the best of our food export, and the worst to our local market. We eating the worst food in whole world everyday.I am a soooooooo sad people in the world!! Because I have not High salary, I have to buy expensive import food to my child.I want to leave here and live in a safe country and have a safe life, but immigration is so hard, almost everyone not like Chinese, I apprehend them!

@epsiloneon Also, I think you mean modified.
KatalanMoon 1 month ago

I think many Americans do not realise how much packaging they waste.
pipsicle81 3 months ago
What nonsense. The assumption that products produced in the USA are better is just wrong. I mean, who wants to drive a Chevy?!?! We buy imported products because the quality of domestic goods is generally inferior.

please yall, stop saying stupid things like the reporter in this video. yea its a California blend, doesnt mean itll be from California. its just like there are Swedish meatballs in America. and the way whole foods knows the food thats organic is because there are whole foods employees who go work on the farms that we have contracts with. theres a reason that whole foods is the only organic certified market.
mrsillyfreak 9 months ago
I think yous are missing the main point, who cares if you know its organic or not. You are raping your country's own vegetable producers who i'm sure are perfectly capable of supplying the demand. You are simply putting american farmers out of business if you by these foods.

What can you say Whole Foods is one Disgusting Company
6308281 10 months ago
I don't understand the uproar about things being from China..... Just because it contains a product there doesn't mean it's any less quality. Just because America doesn't agree with it's communist government, the media skews everything. Farmers in China need to make a living too. Farmers in China care about growing great food too.
smilesgirl17 11 months ago
@smilesgirl17 i don't think it's about communist gov't. It's the simple fact that the packaging says "california blend" that is dishonest. Wholefoods should happily display "china" in large print on the packaging.
Given the amount of contaminated food that's been from China lately, wholefoods new people would be skeptical about buying organic food from china.

"How organic can that possibly be?"

Yeah, this doesnt surprise me... not everything in there is necessarily healthy for you either. [ie., potato chips... I could only find one brand years back that was actually good for you, or as good as having a potato chip can get] ;)
Big selection, overpriced. ;)
dAlen7 1 year ago

Bottom line government cannot monitor all products and any faith in them should also include a golden calf in your daily worship.
lonhosford 1 year ago
@lonhosford John Mackey Opposed Obamacare because his standpoint is that the money should be used to educate the public on healthy eating not paying for diet related diseases. Its common sense... treat the problem not the symptoms.
money spent on food and money spent on healthcare are inversely related.

This just goes to show when a company becomes too big they end up selling out. I remember when Whole Foods bought Mrs Gooches, which was mostly organic. That was a sad day! Mrs Gooches was privately owned and operated. The more Whole Foods stores I see the more I know it has been co opted. It would be nice if some company would do Mass spectrum analysis of random samples of subscribing food products and publish exactly what we are eating. What is scarier and is the use of neurotoxic canola oil in many of Whole Foods products and the gevernment encouraged use of canola oil.
Also, the government does not require that labels list the use of GMO foods. GMO foods have not been properly tested and their approval was besed on political cooperation with the GMO food producers

lame reporting job tho, all speculative. they didn't even take the time to test the food for pesticides - which would have been a very easy way to make this "investigative report" more credible. catering to racist/nationalist fears makes for cheap sensationalist tv.

GwenAYF 1 year ago 2
@GwenAYF UR Insane if you think there is no difference between products from China and USA. Yes, there are many problems with US stuff but at least there is some form of quality control. Do some research yourself on Chinese products and foods and don't just believe what some site tells you. I have friends from China who have told me horror stories about stuff that goes on there. Not everything is a conspiracy.
icandynetwork 1 year ago
I, too, sense a rush to produce a "sensational" TV exposé for their broadcast. I have indeed done some research and I agree with GwenAYF that, while WF no doubt has its problems, and certainly Chinese agriculture is almost not regulated at all, our domestic agriculture production has serious and shocking problems, too. You have to know where your food is coming from, bottom line.
