The coastal village where the phone is ringing is a place called Pennan. They actually moved the callbox temporarilly for the film. Pennan lies on the coast of the Moray Firth in N.E. Scotland.............brilliant scene ,especially if you have been far from where your heart wants to be. Thanks for posting.
I first saw this in 1983 and just recently purchased the DVD. It's an amazing film that is bright and cheery with wonderful understated humour...while in the end tugs at the sentimental heart strings...and the message to me..."One really doesn't know what they have until it's gone"...MK's whimsical yet haunting music just brings it home. I will never get over a lost love whenever I hear it
I just watched this film again today and what a lovely film it is. A timeless classic great to see Burt lancaster's comedy touch and what a fine ensemble cast and god i love the music.
Don't you get sick of films with "cops, car chases and ridiculous amounts of gunfights all that CGI giving you a kingsize headache and using comicbooks as a source will somebody please just make a good film.
This scene was one of the very first ones filmed during production. Peter Riegert had not been to Scotland yet, but he plays the moment so poignantly. This is one of the memorable endings in film.
@hwyfan Just wondering about this great scene and how you knew the shooting sequence. I'm in Houston and a friend's oil company office was used for the boardroom scene, where Lancaster falls asleep.
@tallpaul521 It was listed in IMDB. At that point, producers had not yet come to terms with Burt Lancaster, so I suppose they filmed what they could prior to moving production to Scotland.

This soundtrack was the first CD my parents ever bought. I was four years old and I've been listening to it ever since.
