Heartache all over the world is my favourite Elton John song and love the lyric... 'You can go to Tokyo to Rome looking for a Girl' Elton is the world's best musician !
excellent song...so many great songs of ej that were never hits....this is an example. by the way...i have this concert in audio and video and hundreds more...let me know if you wanna trade.
I think I can tell you what's happening at the beginning of the video.
The band is playing to a sequencer, and the sequencer keyboard is playing out of tune. I remember with some of the older keyboards sometimes the power going to the oscillators would be sketchy, and the pitch would go wonky. It's in tune later, so either (a) the person running the keyboard the sequencer was running to had it out of tune and fixed it, or (b) the keyboard warmed up and it stopped screwing up.
this is great - Elton at his best and mental - I recommend Chasing the Crown on you tube (wearing the pink jacket). I wish he would cut loose and get away from the formulaic performences he does now. 'Crown' is a cross between Xanadu and just impatient Elton at his best. With or withou the coke, he could still pull of his more crazy numbers
Wow! where the bleedin' 'eck did you dig this up from? I have the original VCR tapes of both band and orchestra concerts and you've posted stuff not on it! Unless we brits were deprived! again! Any one uploaded the 12" of healing hands yet?
The folks in Australia and NZ got to see the *entire* concert telecast live. The rest of us have never seen the entire concert. This song was never on release in North America and I'm sure we're missing other video clips as well such as Carla Etude.
That's an understatement. It sounds like the keyboards are literally dying. It's a testament to Elton's ear that he can keep the vocal in tune on top of that.
No, its the tape that the recording was taken from. I have a copy of the original raw tape that was used for the video and it is the same, and on the official VHS video there is pure quality. On the night this was taped there was no distortion at all nor at any of the other venues he played in Australia in the Tour de Force with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concerts.
You're exactly right. There was nothing wrong with the band's performance and it was totally the tape the recording was taken from. Not sure why some people can't accept this fact.
since Elton's voice isn't going out of tune with the keyboards that can't be the case. It sounds like the sequencer was playing out of speed in the beginning.

Everyone on this thread is nitpicking. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's not at all bad...

80's madness at its hight... this is what the music must have sounded like to elton normally at the time!

It has to be said he finishes it as a strong performance which almost overshadows the technocal glitch.

Sounds like the synths weren't tuned properly doesn't it. Shame as I love this song and he's never played it synths...erm.. since.

Despite the shit sound, it's still a nice performance :D.
RIP Guy Babylon

That wasn't Guy playing. It was Fred Mandel and the shitty sound is from the tape source.

I noticed that David Paton the bass player is playing guitar

wow the synths sound knackered

Something sounds way out of tune in the beginning. I think he even gave the band a wierd look before the first "you can go from Tokyo to Rome" line.

I agree, it sounds like the sequencer was playing at the wrong speed in the beginning
