The exact date of the START of the calendar is up for discussion. He and others say, its not an instant efefct on Dec 21st, but a gradual one, in progress already.

has anybody ever thought that the reason why the Mayan calendar ends on 2012 is because the Mayans just got bored with mapping out their calander. so they picked an entirely arbitrary date to end it? and that, in fact, NOTHING AT ALL is going to happen on dec, 21, 2012. that this is going to be another Y2K event?
