  • BY THE WAY, MICHAEL HENDERSON IS THE VOCALIST ON THIS SONG, AS WELL AS THE BASS PLAYER. REAL TALK!

    HMMMM!

  • I CAN SAMPLE, CUT, AND CHOP ANY SONG. IT'S NOT ANART FORM. IT'S A TECH FORM. BY ANY MEANS GET PAID. BUT DONT CALL THEFT OF ANOTHER SONG AN ART. CREATE YOUR OWN BEATS. LET'S HEAR YOU. I BELIEVE IN THE YOUTH. PLEASE GIVE US SOMETHING NEW FROM YOU. WE OGs RECOGNIZE RIGHT AWAY WHEN YOU SAMPLE AND CALL IT YOURS. STOP! DO YOU! I'M DONE WITH THIS CONVERSATION.

  • What happens on this planet stays on this planet.....;)

  • This Bass line only can come from a bassists, and Michael Henderson is a bassists formely with Stevie and the man Miles Davis !

  • I know Norman's a drummer, but, could he sing, too? Michael Henderson sang the vocal on this 1.

  • I absolutely love this song...everytime I think of this song I have the need to get back with my EX gf!!!! :)

  • veterans day

  • 1976....I was in 'kennygarden'...lol....1280 KVOV AM Radio....Ghino B used to wear this out...lol

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! I Just Can't Say!!!

  • i think there is a lot of good music out now.... but the difference is the younger kids cheat themselves out of the knowledge of music sometimes by saying.... f#@ck it... I'll sample it. it is not an art to sample, chop and release another artist songs. Just soak it in, and add you to what you learn from old school... There are only so many beats you can create, but at least make it your own. Norman Conners did not sample or rip this. He created it...

  • @SuperXmadness I disagree, sampling is an art in itself. It just depends on how creative you get with a sample.

  • fin...

  • Mobb Deep sampled this on "Trife Life" from the album The Infamous.

  • @manswrites indeed they did... my favorite part is 1:58

  • Yep. Another killer track. But why does everyone keep on insisting that music is no good 'these days' and 'those days' were the good old days and so forth. I mean, are we all not fucking kicking back to this song right now? What the fuck is the difference? All I do is listen to disco and soul and I DJ that stuff too. As far as I'm concerned music is better than ever 'these days'. Theres still a lot of dope shit going on now n we still have all the old jams too! Lighten up!

  • This was/is the $hit!!! Brings back so many memories. Makes me long for the days of "real music".

  • I agree with Preekcrap2! This is the jam!

  • And this, kids, is where babies come from ;)

  • This is the original MICHAEL HENDERSON SONG, "YOU ARE MY STARSHIP"!

    M. H. Wrote it, Sang it, Played Bass on it, & Produced it!! Norman Connors plays drums! Visit MICHAEL HENDERSON ON FACEBOOK, MYSPACE & LEARN about a LEGEND! • Amen...well said Preekcrap2; one of the finest R&B tunes written. Performance by Michael Henderson is stunning...

  • Hit #4 soul, #27 pop in Billboard. Ironically, in the top 40 at the same time as Jefferson Starship. Funny, huh? God bless!

  • a song to chill while driving in the car with a new date

  • U-N-I - Love Supreme - My Life

  • I haven't heard M.H. since the early 80's. My mom used to jam to him while burning one, under the red light, with the incense going and feeling her groove. She probable thinks that I forgot about those nights but I didn't. I had a few of mine that looked the same way as hers. She just didn't know that me and my friends were doing the same thing and feeling our groove too. Thanks for the post!

  • Wow! What a flashback! My dad always had a brown box & he would pull it out & I would always wonder "why does daddy cut the grass & put it in that box & smoke it-UGH!" LOL! It wasn't until I got older that I realized what he was really doing...LOL! Anyway thanks sexybiscuit 4 taking me back in time! :-)

  • @thetrendblazer cthuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu @ smoking the lawn snippings!! a mess! hahahaha good stuff, good stuff

  • @johnlegarcon well said lol

  • omg this is an oldy but goody....

  • When I was a kid I used to sleep in the back of my dad's Bonneville on nights when he was picking up my mom from work. On the way home this song would always be playing on WGCI, great memories of a simpler time I guess.

  • @EyeJelly a simpler time fa sho!!

  • Every time that I hear this song, I think of my husband who can always take me up in his starship! I love you honey.

  • I cant get enough of this song. I think of my husband taking me up in his Starship!

  • Everytime I hear this song I think about my old highschool boyfirned MIchael. RIP MIke

  • wow, sorry for the lost

  • Man I remember this album. This is one of my favorites. This was the first time I really heard Phyllis Hyman sing "Betcha By Golly Wow". I fell in love with her too after hearing this album.

  • im only 21 years old and im infactuated with this song, as a matter of fact, i like a lot of old music, its official i was born in the wrong time period

  • i was just thinking about the days gone by and remembered this great song by the legendary norman connors and michael henderson.

  • M.H. you still take my breath away and always will!

  • Smooth vibe it's sending

  • "take me up toniiiiiiiight and don't be late"

  • Can I scream loud enough, Thank You, I lived on this song for years, throbbing in love, and this soothe my angst. Oh, Michael Henderson, Sing!

  • This is just simply deadly. R&B and Rap take note. This is how a song should be sung and performed. Also I call on the music industry to put the soul and beauty back into music. This is just blinding stuff and more over just beautiful. Sit back and let this vocal performance wash all over you as it brings the love back into our lives. What a difference from violence and hatred this classic is. So get on that peace and love starship and make love not war. God bless you all out there.

  • ain't that fo' real. dis is da good sh@#! rap can't touch none o' dis. i truly 'preciate er'body who but all dis good stuff on da u tube. thank yah!

  • @Preekcrap2 This is classic Norman Connors.

  • A masterpiece of mellow soul and jazzy grooves, with the heavenly title cut -- "You Are My Starship" -- which features Michael Henderson on vocals and Gary Bartz on sax! Bartz plays on a number of other cuts, too, including a remake of "The Creator Has a Master Plan", "Just Imagine", and a remake of "Betcha By Golly Wow", with Phyllis Hyman on vocals. Hyman also sings a duet with Michael Henderson on the track "We Both Need Each Other". Great stuff, and a groundbreaking LP.

  • Oh my Lord! I just went back to elementary school with one song!!!

  • i don't want nobody, nobody ..... kissin u but me!!

  • This Jam is So Fuckin Legendary

  • love that intro...sampled on a drum and bass track as well, dont know the name off hand though

  • "You are my life; I have to go on...

Have me anyway you want to; just take care and love me 'till my tension's gone."

This ballad is smooth like butter (and still has the ability to make me melt...MERCY!!)

  • Oh yeah .....

That "love me till my tensions gone" lyric was one of the sexiest lyrics ever written .....

    4sho!!!

  • @GetTheLook2010 I feel ya :)

The greatest guiet storm song ever!!!!!!!!

  • La Relève - La Violence (Remix)

an old and good french rap team

  • Dj $hin sampled this for Shing02's MIDITATION track.

I love how these true hip hop artists and producers sample music from the best.

  • OG music right here,,,

  • When I hear this song it always reminds me of the beautifully talented Ms. Phyllis Hyman. So statuesque with one of the most commanding voices I've ever heard. Gone but not forgotten. R.I.P. PH!

  • Soft and Warm, the Majic 108 Quiet Storm, oh my fault guys, just remembering staying on the phone almost until morning with that special someone and not being able to wait until later on that day to do it all over again, and you know what I was never tired at school, I guess I was high on love! Peace!

  • I feel you on that one. I did the same thing. Talking to that special someone till the wee hours of the morning. Somtimes this song would come on during our conversation.

  • I always wanted this song played at my wedding,

but I am confused on who really sings the song Michael Henderson or Norn Connors

  • Michael Henderson is the vocalist and Norman connors and his band play the music. Mr. Henderson is a bassist as well and I think played on this tune.

  • Norman Connors sang it but Micheal did instruments and wrote the song

  • Really? Or is it the other way around?

  • Michael is also singing background vocals.

  • love it soo relaxing for my college finals. dude

  • Great minds think alike. This song has been helping me relax during my AP exams.

    Good luck, dude.

  • The best baseline EVER.

  • Beautiful time and year. The 70s were the best.

  • don't u hear "visions" by jagged edge in this song if you don't know what im talking about go to jagged edge and look up their song visions!

  • Yes. Girl the first time I heard that Jagged Edge song I heard the "Starship" jam in it and was excited. That song "Visions" is an out cold song, too. Love it.

  • yeah, this was one of my jams to get it with. I would push it through Quadraphonic Stereo when most brothers were trying to understand stereo! lol A dark room, candles or street lights shining in on sheer drapes, a "play pen" to lounge on while listening. The best of alcohol and best of colognes in a smoking jacket and velvet slippers. My Starship playing in the background through all 4 speakers. That was the mood setter!

  • I love your description. The imagery is amazing.

  • Thank you Classyjazzlady, I am glad you can appreciate my most memorable "growing years."

  • Quality

  • This brings back good memories

  • I hope you brang the heat and do it justice. I'll round up a group of real Ol Skoolers like me n rat pack ya! LOL! Good luck to ya.

  • mobb deep!!!!!

  • Right. Mobb Deep put a good spin on it. That Mobb Deep song is a pure classic.

  • this is Michal Henderson,,,,,,,from his Wife and Kids

  • Norman Connors Starship is right there next to Lenny Williams' Because I love as 2 of the best love songs ever.

  • i agree

  • This song is so deep...You are my starship...what a song....

  • sung with incredible romance...you won't hear this kind of talent when you turn on the radio today...that's unfortunate, but we can still turn on our memories...

  • this song give me a buzz

  • this is my jam.. OMG.. i love this song.. so soothing and romantic..

  • I like this song alot

  • Kid, thank you for this, I love you baby.

  • Michael Henderson wrote the song, sang lead and played bass.

  • .....and dont be late hell yea!

  • yeah good shit

  • This alone makes me forget about life adversities...

  • Keep forgetting how good the music was when I was growing up. Used to listen to this when my parents weren't at home, since we weren't allowed to use their stereo when they weren't at home. Sounds better than most of the mess that's out there these days.

  • One word: Atmospheric.

  • baby yeahhh

  • Never heard this song until I heard Kenny Lattimore sing it. I love the original, cant stop listening to it.

  • I had this album but had to get rid of it along with over 20,000 others due to moving. Been depressed ever since.

  • Thats a sader story than this song. my condolances.

    Graham

  • Lovely

I remember when it first came out.

  • Could never beat an original

  • And don't you cum too soon.. :-)

  • That base is AMAZING it just creates that laid back mood

  • Classic soul. I'm sure his time playing bass for Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis helped him quite a bit as he went on to solo ventures.

  • This tune is mint.

  • this is some real og shit

  • michael henderson wrote this original version sang it and arranged the music and is playing the bass just google michael henderson norman connors and see

  • Michael Henderson wrote this song; he & Norman Connors arranged and produced it.
