Pigeons will sometimes let you get fairly close before they fly off. Especially in an area where theyve come to expect people to feed them.

I remember in college a couple were once standing on the hood of my car. I opened the door and got in and shut it fairly hard and they just stood there like. "Eh, big deal". I started the car and pulled out and they still stayed on. even as I began to drive. Of course when I started moving faster, THEN they shit on my hood and flew off.

When you check the answering machine one message says "Good job, Luke." or something to that effect. This has led many to speculate that the Rookie's name might be Luke.

With all the panic in the streets its feasible they made a wrong turn. It's not THAT hard to lose your bearings in New York.

Its also possibly by saying they lost sight Egon meant they DID have a visual but Mr SP turned arund a corner out of their field of vision. And with everyone freaking out and getting in the way they just couldnt keep up. So they knew where he was but theydidnt actually have a visual on him.

No offense but complaining over a look of a piece of equipment means you seriously need to let go. Besides, have you seen a real proton pack close up? I've seen an image on Google, and there's so much crap on it not counting th gadgets in the game that they HAD to simplify the look of the pack to make it easier to draw.

@NUTCASE71733 Very true. Besides its been several years since they started out. Just look at the technology like it's evolving. Appearances change. Theyve got more money to develop the technology than they started out with.

Its not that unreasonable to assume that theyve streamlined and simplified the tech over time. Polished the appearance. But it still maintains enough the core elements of its original appearance that you cant possibly NOT tell it's Ghostbusting equipment.
