  • So are all of these scale positions in the key of G? This is all the G major scale?

  • He's like here start with this finger, then starts playing down the 1st position without telling you what strings, and the quality is so bad i cant tell what fingers hes pressing down on.

  • @xNailedDeadRisen

    E 578

    A 57

    D 457

    G 457

    B 578

    E 578

There are 7 repeating notes (degrees) in the scale G A B C D E F# G they are all under your fingers in that scale so the next step is to 'say em as you pick em'.

    Hope this helps.

  • I dont get it, I get this 5 major scale positions but what major scale A B C D E ?? wchich one ? can i move every of this positions on the neck ? what if i want to play in kay of A major how do i apply it to the positions . im lost..

  • @Bazgann - he is starting from the G note.... because he started the scale on the 3rd fret..... now when you want to play on A. then you start from the 5th fret, 6th string which is an A note.. same with the other notes... basically he is using the G Major Scale in this video.....:))

  • @mrejmanalo123 oh thanks man it helped.

  • where do u work?

  • good quality

  • Luv your work justin, but when we are trying to follow your fingering to write down the patterns, it doesn't help when you go fast!!!! Please slow it down, Please !!

  • I cant believe I went 3 years without knowing my scales properly, I LOVE YOU JUSTIN

  • Thanks, I am working on it. I am 69 and my fingers are trying.

  • this could be a stupid question..but..are these all G major scales?

  • @DigsysBird yeah

  • thanks a lot ! it's very helpful

  • and this would be in the key of G right?

  • can anyone please tell me if this is an example of a major scale

    E 579

    A 579

    D 679

    G 679

    B 7910

    E 7910

  • @Rorschachxx1985 yes, that would be A major

  • This is a legato technique. legato shape...its root key is A because the E begins with 5 as u said.

  • @Rorschachxx1985 This is a bloated A Major scale worthy of a finger exercise but off the mark as far as the 5 positions Justin is teaching here, the idea with the 5 positions is to keep it all tight while still using the correct notes of the scale which in A Major are A B C# D E F# G# A (WWHWWWH) so if I was to play an A Major scale from the 5th fret it would look more like.

    E 457

    A 457

    D 467

    G 467

    B 57

    E 457

Sorry its long winded but also helps clarify it all in my head to write some of it out

  • @mrdtrotter thank you, i get it :)

  • What about open position?? I'm confused.

  • Give me your hands !!! XD

  • I would imagine that it would be a good idea to identify (in your head) the note you're playing as you go up & down the scale? That way, by the time you are fast enough to play 4 notes per metradone click, you know where numerous notes are up & down the neck.

  • @MrTjgale You can move the root note. If you were to move position 1 up two frets you would be playing the A major scale [because the root falls on the fifth fret of the E string, which is the note A] The rest of the positions move up two frets aswell so they fall on the correct root notes.

  • @MrTjgale You can indeed move the root note, however it's more common to use a mode of the major scale when moving a root note. Cheers. [Factually, modes are just used more.]

  • you have a cool accent! :D

  • @MrTjgale yes, anywhere. :)

  • due respect to Justin, i can't see half of the fingers he"s pressing, maybe a better angle for us extreme noobs.

Thanks for all of your other incredible tutorials though...

  • Can I only improvise these scales in the key of G?

  • Wow, when he joins the scales, cool

  • You are a legend for all these great free lessons.

  • this pattern applies on every key, when only the root note changes ?

  • I noticed that you give the tab (on your site) for the different positions of the minor pentatonic but not for the major scale, why is that? Or maybe I just overlooked it...

  • "You following me there Jedi?" ... "Sweet Ass"

  • @TrippleLee ahahahhaa can anyone tell me why that happens' XD

  • i can now do major scales in any positions, the problem is my finger no. 4 the smallest was real short :))

  • i swear i would have had to pay so much money to learn the stuff youve taught thousands of people for free, you are a great man justin sandercoe, thank you.

  • I agree with testament214. Justin does a fantastic job providing such a wide range of lessons for all. Because I have learned so much from him, I went to his WebSIte and donated a modest amout via PayPal as a small way of saying "Thanks!". You would easily pay $50 or more in the USA for private lessons such as these. - Thanks Justin, we all apprciate your work!

  • haha...i prefer "Sweet Ass." In fact, i think i'm going to start saying "sweet ass" to mean okay: "how you doing?"

    ans: "Sweet Ass"...haha

  • at 2:22 does the guy video taping say, "SWEET ASS"?

  • @bastardluv he says sweet as...it means hes following him well

  • @bastardluv HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • this is where i get confused, what major scale is he playing here? would the root note change depending on the key your in? and then wouldn,t the sequence change?

  • great teacher :)

  • great teacher :)

  • You following me there, Jelly?

    Sweet ass.

  • Sorry for a nooby question, but (on the position 1 one), when coming down the scale, why didnt he start on the G on the 1st string, why did he add that extra A on that string and then G, and then come down?

  • @Flames649 well i'm sort of a noob also but he adds notes before going to the root because then the scale resolves nicely so. it's all about leading tones, A resolves to G and B resolves to C etc. The more you practice scales the more you'll get used to the sounds a guitar makes and you'll see why this works without any technicalities.

  • This guy could wear a g-string or a damn snowsuit for all I care

  • testament214, You are a classless PIG & a pimple on the ass of the male gender!

You should just shut the fuck up! Seriously!

  • is this a diatonic scale also?

  • are the positions still on his site? i cant find them. :(

  • @Commiteee yes they are

  • Thanks for the lesson Justin..just a doubt..aren't we supposed to start and end on the ROOT note for each scale?

  • you really are a good person

  • Are these five positions the same thing as the CAGED Method? And are they the same thing as the modes??

  • Can anyone explain why the root note is G# in the 1st position? Why isn't it G?

  • @Solus77 it is G, but played with 2nd finger ;)

  • this guy is good.

  • I'd let him bang my girlfriend if he let me bang his.

  • 2:21

  • people who take time to make free lessons are greatly appreciated by folks who are wanting to learn! I would let you bang my girlfriend!

    so....do I have to wear a condom?

jk your comment is so true

  • @testament214 I would let him bang my dad!

  • @bergalini haha Nice!!

  • Ok.. uh. Did I just hear jedi go "Sweet ass"? lol

  • right now i've completely memorized up and down the neck of the blues scale and the minor pentatonic scale and im now learning the major scale (ionian) and i was wonderin do i need to learn all 7 major scales with it or just some of them,

  • the hell u talking about manguitarman u sir are a douchebag- hey its fuc_ing justin of course he can wear a wool that, thats his signature look, appreciate the lessons instead cuz they helped u a lot

  • Thanks for the great lesson.

  • Geez "Mainguitarman" why would you go to all the trouble of posting such a mean comment? BTW check the date of this video

(2006!!) Wool hats were al the rage in "those days". SAY YOU'RE SORRY! :)

  • OK well I suppose I should apologize, and if anyone thinks wearing a wool hat in summer indoors is cool looking, fine. My opinion is that it looks retarded. Now wearing pajamas to work, that's cool. Anyway thanks for the lesson. These youtube lessons have helped me tremendously and I appreciate anyone who takes the time to give us these free lessons.

  • who cares what someone wears......thats more retarded than anything anyone could wear.

  • Why do you wear a wool hat indoors? Is it supposed to look cool? Well it doesn't. It looks retarded. Cool lesson, thanks!

  • What am I supposed to play? Because I cannot follow the notes you are playing and your scale diagrams make no sense. All i get is to start on the 3rd fret and then i get lost. And what do those numbers and red dots supposed to mean on the diagrams? Please help.

  • The numbers relate to the finger used (1 = first finger, 2 = middle etc) As or the red notes, a major chord triad is made up of the root note (R on his website), the major 3rd and a perfect 5th. if you look at the first scale, the root is on the low E string, then follow the pattern to the third note (maj 3rd) and then the 2 notes ater than lead to the perfect 5th.

  • your a great teacher master

  • so with the major scale..its the same notes as the minor pentatonic except with the major scale your adding a few extra notes right?

  • who at 2:20 does the camera guy say - "sweet ass" ? hahahlol

  • Mate, that's fucking hilarious! Awesome ::)

  • I can not follow how hes doing it

  • can someone please help ? i understand the five positions for the "g" scale, but what about five positions for "c" or "d". and where do you play them ,and how to you know like what chords are in each scale ? ive looked everywhere but i cant seem to find out, even on the mighty J's website ? thanks !

  • You switch the root note to whichever "key" you wan to play it in and play the other notes accordingly. Like, if i wanted to play a C scale first position, i would switch the root note to the c note on the first string, play the note two spaces away from that, and continue with the scale. What i just wrote was a bit confusing if you don't already understand it; the best advice i can give you is that all five of the positions are "moveable" and take on key of the root note you play.

  • First off thanks for replying i appreciate it ! So where would the five positions be on the fretboard for "c" or "b" then ? i know the locations of the note i.e "c" on 6th string 8th fret , but what about other positions then on what strings ? Also when do you pick what position and how ?

  • Check out this website. Play all the scales once, and see how they follow the same shape.

  • yeah i get the shapes but how do you know what ones to play and where , he doesnt explain ? what about the minor scale ? also how do you know what chords are in what key , there nothing about that on his wbsite ?

  • Its the notes you play..Got to play a certain note..Look up notes on guitar

  • @Nevadatyler13 --see my one single video explaining chord progression theory and how that coincides with notes/scales

  • @chrmca yeah exactly! If anyone finds anything related to that subject PLEASE post it here! So we can all have a look ! Please!

  • this is the best chanel for learning guitar

  • he is playing D major here right?

  • it's G major

  • right...i was wrong

  • yo justin been playin for about 10 months now and ive always been confused about these scale positions u say move pos 1 to pos 2 and so on but carnt u play these scales anywhere on the fret board?

if u can reply it will be much appreciated.

and thx uve helps me learn alot. gonna get ur blues dvds for criggy ;) peace man. take care

  • If you find the C note on the low E string. And then move this to f.ex an A note. Then you can use the same pattern. And you are playing the A major Scale. there are two patterns you can use as pattern 1/starting point.

  • Comment removed

  • Do you have an easy way to learn to link them together without having to remember a wad of dots?

  • Hm..If that's so, will this help me to learn tabs?..

  • it good for understanding music, soyes, but mainly to compose

  • Okay so there are 5 positions to the major scale. I get that but what I do not get is where to use them. For example... Can I use pos 1 on the 8th fret? Or does pos 1 only exist on the 3 fret?

  • yeah, but that way it's not a major G scale, it would be a major C scale remember the way the strings are tuned

  • He has all the fingering and position locations on his website. Check it out, full of info.

  • i find memorizing the formulas and the notes in each key helps, if you know every note on the fretboard it makes it easier

  • ive tried to momorize the notes for every fret but it gets so hard cuz theres 24 frets. 24*6 is like 144? thats alotta notes to remember. got any tips on making it easier to remember the frets?

  • just take ur time, revise over 3 frets at a time, u actually only need to learn 12 frets as they repeat on the next octave at fret 12. maybe try learning all natural notes first, i find that helps

  • if you learn the first ones.. everyone else will come anyway, because they just repeat

  • learn the alphabet...

  • do you mean remembering what the note is

    eg on the e cord: f f# g g# a a# b b# c d d# etc

or do you mean the position

    i have techniques for both

    message me

  • this is good but it would be easyer to follow if you told what fret and string!! i had to watch a postion for 5mins to get it on paper!!

  • Like he said. Look at his site!

  • lol

  • I play the blues guitar since 1994 and you're the guy who just opened my eyes on a way to appropriate full Major Scale with your 5 positions' style around the root note... next to penta minor way of learning.

THANKS. A VERY MUCHO LOTTO BIG FULL PLENTY OF THANKFULLNESS.

  • Hi Justin, I learnt the positions from a legato column in GT magazine because it seemed like it gave me a logical way of building fast lines in the scale. However, I am practicing in 3rds now and not sure whether to learn this 5 position shape as opposed to the 7 position one. Just in 7 positions it gives me a better understanding of how the shapes interlock, whereas with 5 positions I only see them as 5 seperate scales.

  • Lol when Jedi goes 'Sweet As!' =)

  • One the scale page the scale diagrams are different from what notes your playing, I'm confused here.

  • no on the website diagrams those are different ones: hees talking about 5 dif. positions in just ONE key.

  • just wanted to say thanks: thanks.

  • Hmm i dont get it. If i take a normal G major scale and move it up to the 7th fret, and use the same pattern - i would get a C major? according to what i see in the CAGED system. The root notes hit exactly where they did ind the g major? What am i not seeing here? :)

  • so you line up the roots. G major's E string root is the 3rd fret. if you move the scale up until that root is a C you will have a C major scale. This will be the 8th fret. any root on the Estring will yield this result if you orient the scale around it. A= 5th B= 7th C= 8th D= 10th E= open F= 1st G= 3rd

  • Thank you :)

  • Scale's seperate the men from the boys , you'll always know how serious a player is about guitar : just ask them to play the major scale in the 5 positions and see what happens ! or even just ask them to play 1 position.

  • Actually, playing the scales without being pinned into boxes is what separates the men from the boys.

  • i dont understand how major scales could be movable if you take the C Major scale for example... starting on the 8th fret on the low E and move it down 5 frets to a G.....the notes are going to different......your going to be playing a G Major scale with that F# instead of a C Major scale...correct?

  • You also change string, so if moving 5 frets down, your root note (the first and last note in the scale) would be fret 3 on the A string, with a different fingering pattern to hit the same notes... (you would play down through the C note, then back up to it)

  • so its these positions arent moveable then??

  • Know how when you're tuning the second string with the third, you have to go down to the fourth fret instead?

  • the patterns are movable, but by moving the pattern, you change the root note (and change the scale), there are 5 patterns used here for the G major scale, and like you say when you moved one pattern from the C root note, to the G, you use the same pattern to play through G major as you did for C major (and the sharps/flats automatically fit into the pattern)

  • Ray

    - New Jersey!

  • Thanks a lot Justin. You are the greatest teacher I have ever seen!

  • Comment removed

  • i have a question....this is in the key of G, what is the major scale in the key of C?

  • same finger position but on the C root note on the neck, so example would be 8th fret low E string

  • Would have been good if U would lift your fingers so I can see what notes your playing...Or maybe you don't know how to tab yet? U could have asked 1 of your students to tab it for you...sure would help..

  • This is so helpful.. Thanks.

  • 5 positions 7.. blah,. in either case you need to memorize the repeating pattern and own the entire neck to set the solo monster free..

  • What is that at 2:22 ??xD

  • snded to me like "sweet ass" hahahaa.

  • Can anyone help me as to IF he has a PDF of the 5 positions on his website. Not finding it.

  • All I find is five pictures of the positions. They are at

Scales -> SC-001 The Major Scale.

  • amazing...

  • this is the first lesson off of you tube that i actaually learned something from im a beginning guitarist and most videos on you tube are too advanced even if they say beginner

  • why are the positions on the video different from the ones on the website? its confusing me, i don't know which one to learn.

  • the ones that sound like:

Do Re Me Fa So La Ti Do .. =P

  • thanks man... about five min after i posted this i realized he was starting his scale shapes with the root notes, but it was too late.

  • 0:20 i have that red guitar :O

  • is it good to alternate pick these?

  • always alternate pick

  • EXTREMEMLY ..

    infact, always do so.

  • Im stuck in position 1 for a month but never be able to play smoothly and fast. It sounded kinda odd. I practised 1 hour a day.

  • practise slowly and avoid mistakes and it will come easily...believe me i was in the same problem but now i'm good with this position ;D

  • What chords can you use for G major scale?

  • What chords can you use for this scale?? Please answer:D Thx!
