There's an easier way to keep the ruffians out of your garden, just buy Captain's Cutlass and they're gone, the Dastardos scarer has done wonders for me as well.

get a captians cutlass from ivor bargain (im not certian what level you have to be for it to be avaliable though)

ivor bargain was orginally the begger that comes into your garden when you reach a certian level (give him 1000 coins and he opens a shop)
