Technically, Lake Superior is an inland fresh water sea. It is named Superior because it has the highest elevation of the Great Lakes. The Ojibwe call the lake Gichigami, meaning "big water."
@coyotelarry no, geologically its not a sea. a sea is a body of water that has an input of water, but does not have an outlet, therefore all seas are will be saltwater. But i know what you mean, Its big, REALLY big for a lake.
Search for 'Lake Superior Movie ', then you will have a lot of further searching to do since that title is used by other videos. If I remember right this video is in black & white, & the wave front in the left of the video is ~6-8ft. or so & rises towardr the right of the video to a height of between 20 - 30ft. or so, it is hard to tell but easily 20ft. 20ft waves are not rare along the Canadian, Minnesota, & Upper Penninsula of Michigan's Lake Superior shores.
Avafors contd: Her radar had gone out after two especially big pounders. When the pilot house door was ripped off, the Swedish captain turned to Captain Woodard and gasped: "We've got no business out here." But by that time, Captain Woodard knew it was too late; there was no turning back.
Avafors contd: As night fell, the Avafors was taking a terrible pounding. The wind was screaming, blowing half of the wave tops right off. The sea was not just big rollers, but practically straight walls of water. The waves were slamming the ship so hard that the people on board could barely stand on their feet. In 8 hours, the big Swedish freigher had managed to travel only an estimated 12 miles into the head seas. For 2 hours, she had not gained a ship's length.
The Swedish ship was the Avafors. An excerpt from the book 'In the Teeth of the Northeaster': The ship's pilot, Captain Cedric Woodward, was growing concerned as the upbound Avafors entered Superior to the east. He advised the Swedish captain beside him on the bridge: "We sure as hell have got no business out here." A veteran sailor who had braved the North Atlantic, the captain could barely hold back his contempt.
IOTW, don't knock the Great Lakes because they will knock you. Sea going ships have had their pilot house doors ripped off and Saltie sailors have near crapped their pants, such as on the night the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. It was a Swedish saltie and the captain turned white as the steel door 30 to 35-foot above the water line was rippred off and his ship was battered by wave after wave of 20-foot plus waves moving at 20 or so miles per hour. Winds reached 100mph.
Of course 'all those waves' are from Superior, and they get much bigger than that, up to at least 35ft. and possibly 50 to 60ft. in a very bad storm with high winds of up to 100mph, but they are vertical or square waves as some Lakes' sailors etc. call them and when they are that big they are impossible to surf.
Yes, 60-foot surf doesn't occur on the Great Lakes, but 60-foot waves do in stroms that blow for a day or two or three out in the Lakes. With a sea of 26-feet 56-foot rogue waves can occur, and possibly up to 70-feet as survivors of the Great Storm of 1913 etc. claimed. Do some reading. Surf of near 20-foot or so does occur on the Great lakes. And Waimea Bay is not the only place in the world that gets 60-foot surf.
quadfin1234; Maybe that's not how you speak down under, but, it's perfectly acceptable here in the states, even when we aren't trying to sound intelligent. Why get so excited about how someone speaks? Afterall, you haven't made much of an example with your little rant.
That was a rhetorical question,,, that means I really don't expect an answer.
Very nice. Wind surfing and surfing in the winter time on Lake Superior. Those dudes actually will draw large amount of people watching them out there

The Sea of Galilee, semantics. Yes, Galilee, Kinneret, Lake of Gennesaret, Lake Tiberias is a lake but is called a sea.
I was responding to the to the question; “why is it call lake superior”?

@mvallin, I found that black & white video of the big waves coming onshore in Superior: Search for ' Lake Superior Waves', & the poster is jdhaly24.
At about 50-sec. the view of the wave starts & pans right where it is a good 20-ft. tall.
