Just used what ever kind of mortar they had at Home Depot with no rocks in it...I used some 1X but they were not necessary due to the fact the the concreat is below the grass and you can not see it...I dug down and the ground could have been the form...its a backbreaking job but totally do able...good luck.

I'm doing a similar projects and about the same size too.How did you setup forms or did you use forms or just chalk line?
what kind of mortar for butter and for brick top filling?
