I love this version of this song and I love the way Chris plays guitar. I wihs he would have still in the band, even after Peter Cetera left. However,I think he should have had a Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall amp to make his guitar really sounding rockin'. His telecaster would be perfect for the soft ballad songs though.
I disagree. Every player who ever played guitar in the band as THE guitarist by title was amazing with skill granted, but both Pinnick and Bailey ad-libbed solos way too much and added too much of their own personal elements sometimes that took away from the Kath-like roots that killed it sometimes.
Plus it sounded almost like he threw off Danny at first with his extra strums. Anyway, if you hear the current guitarist, Keith Howland, his style as far as guitar play, is almost exactly like Terry Kath's. He stays true to the original sound of each song that had a solo like Kath's or anything along those lines. It's a plus that Howland can sing a little too. But dont get it twisted. Pinnick is an excellent guitarist, but he didn't do songs like this justice like Keith Howland does nowadays.
I'm wondering now, if the echo/feedback from the mic was intentional or not. It adds a strange effect to the music. Not saying I don't like it, just that I've never heard them do that before.
I'm guessing it was genuine. You know this was the 80s. Adding extra echo or reverb in everything made things sound more digital and computer-like. They probably did that to give these songs more of a "modern" sound if you will. You know I think that's a part of the reason why they re-did this song on Chicago 18 the way they did which in my opinion was a total stupid dipshit mistake!
They covered/re-did 'Along Comes A Woman' as well. Why? Was it to make the transition in the lineup smoother? Or to have the fan's acception of Scheff easier? I have no clue. All I do know is, that my Chicago collection ends at 'Chicago 17'.
I can totally understand that. I am pretty sure that the reason why Chicago 18 didn't make it to the top 10 (It hit #35 at it's peak on the Billboard top 100) was because many Chicago purists couldn't accept the departure of Peter Cetera. Since 1982, he became the face of the band. Well due to MTV's music videos and all. Knowing he was the face of that voice everyone was hearing. The remake was done to be more with the times and I still think that was stupid.
their was no one on Earth like The Legendary TERRY KATH, but their were never anyone like Chris Pinnick as well! =0]

Hate the effects done in this version. Far prefer the Japan 1984 rendition.

actually if you listen closly in the japan vid they still use the effects but they're real low

and on the 1987 concord pavilion live soundboard recording, scheff's vocals are worsely over echoed than cetera's
