Did you consider that he might have cultivated some sort of romantic feelings towards you? Sometimes great compatibility instigates such behavior, especially during puberty. If he was afraid of the probable disruption this might cause, then pushing you away and letting others enter his life may be his way to cope, in hopes that such feelings would go away with time?

In year5 I was new in school & made a best friend who I hung out with every day in school and every weekend, until a new girl came to our school in year9 and literally stole her from me. My friend would hang out less with me, would start fights for no reason just so that she could hang out with this new girl. Now I don't know my once good friend anymore. And now since we all left school in 2010, I don't know her at all. We've only spoken twice all through 2011. But yeah, people change.
I seriously just want to give you an enormous hug :( I know the exact feeling. Except, it was with an entire group of friends. I never found any as great as they were though. But, like you always say, stay positive. The absence of them has given me time to think about myself, and more about who I am. However, I do wish I had someone that gave me such a feeling of bliss as they did.
I hate it, too, but you're right - friendships can and do end for ridiculous reasons. I'm sorry you lost someone who meant that much to you, and I hope one day you are able to make amends. I think it's awesome the things you did for him when he needed the friendship you shared the most, and I hope one day he realizes what a treasure you have been in his life. Relationships do tend to put a damper on things, though - I've experienced it in my own circle on both ends.
