For me the initial telling point was the GoDaddy hosted web sites. The unfinished character of the websites supported the characterization of amateur or scam. The felony record, particularly the frauds, was enough to know no legit was involved

As far as I can see Hilton's plan might have been to collect initial outlays and then simply disappear. That seems to be his MO. Go find some marks, set them up with some Players, who also been conned, get the initial investments then disappear.
That is basically how his unsettled Real Estate scam in Calif went.
