You're a female [x] in a tournament species-supporting environment. You can choose a mate with rounder features (who can't protect you from the advances of the bigger, more aggressive males but is willing to help you raise offspring) or you can 'choose' a "man"-faced tournament male (who won't give you a choice in the matter of breeding but will at least be aggressive enough to keep the OTHER tournament males away).
Which do you choose? Would you choose a mate in between if given the chance?
this hugely depends on which species, he mentioned in another video that (correct me if im wrong) but there is variability between chimp species in terms of how affectionate they are, what they do to show that etc....im assuming a chimp in that species might choose a mate somewhere in between. if i was a tournament species (say for example a horse :) i would choose the highest horse in the herd to mate with and i wouldnt dare be caught stealing a "secret couplation" in the bush because ive...
chosen the highest horse therefore the possibility of another male breeding with me is 0. i, being the highest female, has a choice in who i mate with because of my rank among the other females. ive chosen the highest male as my mate and the others have chosen him as their herd leader because he has demonstrated that he can protect from predators. also, something he mentioned in his other video was that you can see female "choice" when the female moves to a different place and...
...causes the male to pursue her. this is NOT a show of choice. this is a way for the female to test how much her mate is willing to control her, she needs to know that she is being protected and the way for her to do that is to cause him to have to make a decision on wether he wants to keep up with her. sorry for the long reply, love these videos!
@olliethekitty It would be nice if this were how it works, but the dominant males aren't necessarily going to protect anyone else. In reality they use their speed and power to escape dangerous situations and leave the weaker behind ("survival of the fittest.")
As he noted in a prior lecture the mother or grandmother, when no longer fertile, are the most likely to protect. Generally speaking the alpha male is more likely to go mate with the new #1 female than fight for the current one.
@koviack True. Policemen and firemen as well. That's a culturally learned behavior. Humans are amazing, especially in their ability to choose their values and beliefs. When it comes to brains, values and beliefs, humans win.
I was responding to a particular point and noting that out on the savannah the big, bad dudes don't run out to protect the weaker. Instead they scurry away and let the weaker be killed. There are exceptions and he details a heartwarming one in A Primate's Memoir.
Symmetry in the face means symmetry through out the body. I've seen a study where a doctor measured the symmetry of the ears of track & field runners & the more symmetrical their ears the faster they run.
hmm I don't think sport falls under the concept of violence. The participants have chosen to take part in the game, and it happens under controlled circumstances. The aggressive drive might be involved, but it is not violence
I enjoyed smelling woman’s (well, she was hot maybe that's why) sweaty shirt long time ago and it was making me horny..it was way more powerful than just looking at her naked pictures even..I think that's what he was talking about in some sense..
@elbowtido27 Evolution is not directed so it doesn't have 'purposes'. If you insist on talking about evolution as if it's a person, then from a that perspective human sexuality also works through other 'purposes' to achieve passing on genes (pair bonding, stress relief, etc). Sapolsky talks about these other effects. tl;dr -> orsonfeud fails at listening, but your question is either not even wrong or answered with no
You haven't watched the previous videos on this subject right? Because he clearly proposed that sex has a role among other things in group coherency. And he talks only about facts. Talking about facts does not make you a windbag, but having an opinion like yours does.
@orsonfreud you may have to listen to the windbag for long enough to grasp his perspective before making spurious critiques that misrepresent what he is saying!
i wish he would slow down my god. great lectures :D

Averaged faces and symmetry would both be easier to data compress, and thus easier (more relaxing) for the brain to work with.

@orsonfreud From an evolutionary perspective, isn't the entire purpose of human sexuality to pass your genes on?
elbowtido27 1 year ago
@elbowtido27 No

@UrkTheKeg Yes, lol. We reproduce sexually because genetic diversity works.

@UrkTheKeg Semantics. "Purpose" doesn't imply intent in the context of evolution, obviously. It certainly makes it easier to talk about though.
