Whaaaa? haha. I never knew FZ did this show. But I can't listen to him talk without expecting to hear the band jump in at any moment. "They talk briefly, and then guess what? Moroto kills himself" -snare pops, brass trills and Napoleon Murphy Brock screams, 'not the Desenex burger!'-
Looks like FZ might have had some acting potential. But Miami Vice? What was he thinking? Can't scrape much closer to the bottom of the velveeta barrel than that.
Note the white-painted weapon on a tripod (looks like a 20MM Oerlikon deck gun or maybe a dressed up M2 Fifty Cal MG with a ventliated barrel cover) mounted on the boat, you hardly even notice it's there. Actually for a drug lord, it's a neat touch as it blends in well on his yacht. If you look carefully, you can see it at 3:47 to the right. Neat touch, and it makes you wonder why they went to the trouble for something most people never noticed.
One of the good episodes, speaking of cameo's roberto duran blew his brains out at the beginning(who zappa is talking about).Alot of famous people, musicians, athletes wanted to be on miami vice.Im sure they regret putting danny sullivan and bill russell on though...yikes,really REALLY bad acting. But zappa i think was one of the better guests.
@BigKahuna93 --- he was on SNL, many years ago. His appearance was a eagerly expected fusion of the counterculture tastes of him and the SNL performers. But the chemistry wasn't right and the skits were tense and unsuccessful. His music numbers, though, were excellent, including "The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing"
Frank may have done this for his kids, maybe as a lark...I don't think he took it all that seriously when he did it...that slightly stilted, flat delivery of his lines sounds pretty deadpan in tone...the weasel dust line could've been improvised or thrown in by someone (writer, director, Don Johnson) as a comical tribute to Frank. No opinion on Miami Vice, didn't like or dislike cause I never watched it, and never knew Frank appeared on it. He was taking on Tipper around then, wasn't he?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So why did they make a big turn to the left when they were leaving Zappa's boat? Why didn't they just go straight? Why does Zappa jump in the water? Why doesn't he say, "F%ck you, I'm not jumping in, take me back to my boat!!"? This show sucked, it always socked.
Good job Frank didn't seriously try to pursue a career in acting - 1) We'd have missed out on the fucking best music in the universe and 2) He would have bombed worse than the Edsel!
Frank was smart enough to make enough cameo's(monkees and cheesy talk shows), to keep his career/music in the public eye,,, as Houdini intimated,, all publicity is good publicity,,the general public was too dumb to recognize this genius,,,,hence retarded rumours instead of more musical/philosophical recognition/support
Pure Hollywood in FLA . Frank was already ill - look at his eyes. Miami Vice probably paid well; I dont blame him. They could have directed him better though. His speech about Marotto was quite good - but you cant see him as it is all cut-aways, also the way he looked when our heroes arrive was solid. It gets really unconvincing when they start to tussle and they even do a limbo dance on that crap when they force him to swim.... he holds his nose???
"Weasel Dust"? Sounds like something Frank would have thought up. Maybe they were thinking of "Weasels Ripped my Flesh".
I'm sorry, I'm one of Frank's biggest fans and I think that he should have stuck with his music and not guest in shows like this. He was a musician, not a actor.
Weasel dust?! 1:40 When I look back on all the things I did in the 80s,I seem to have completely missed the weasel dust boat. *sigh* I guess I just wasn't cool enough to get invited to any weasel dust parties. Which is probably for the best, maybe thats what got Richard Gere into his "troubles".
Almost everything popular in the 80s had a slimy, corporate, sheen of suck all over it.
As this clip clearly demonstrates...Music Is The Best.
So let me get this right: they hire cultural icon and musical genius Frank Zappa to play a big time drug dealer, they set him up to be all scary, and then they don't even shoot him or something? They don't even arrest him??? They just drive off in the boat chuckling? Somebody in the Miami Vice production office must have been doing a lot of weasel dust. I like to think of FZ pocketing the cheque and wondering what studio equipment to buy with it...
I have wanted to see this clip again for as many years as it has been - since it first aired. I have referenced, " my favorite Dollars, " every time I payed out to anyone. I am grateful to see it here again. However in retrospect it was pretty lame. Was I too young to realize that this show sucked? Cause Zappa was hilarious.
I remember this so well. You are right he played himself and did a hell of a job!!!! Everything he did was great!!!! There will be many fans, but I think I got to be #1. God Bless Frank!!!!!
Hell, Zappa outacted Don Johnson in my opinion. The show was ridiculous. There is no way the other gunman on that boat would not have gotten a clean shot on either Crockett or Tubbs. Real life isn't anything like Miami Vice, which wouldnt have been a problem if the show didn't take itself seriously, but it did. A cops and robbers cartoon is what it was. That "fashion" actually took hold for about two years also with loser men. It was ridiculous to see A-holes in blazers with no socks...
The music is great - it's wasted talent, however. "Weasel dust"; what a sappy cartoon. I suspect this 5 minute clip explains the plot so well we needn't waste our time with the other 43 minutes of it...
