@gluue3 I disagree, the country was not at all more stable and far worse than it is now, but it is in very bad shape now. However I don't think the fight there can be "won" by outside forces. It's simply a loose loose situation sadly, where both choices are bad ones. Leaving the country will probably be the better choice for all the soldiers and their families, but definatly not for most of the Afghans. They have had 30 years of war and I don't see it end in the next 20 years.

Then there are the drug gangs, who fight to be left alone so they can produce some 90 percent of the world's illegal heroin and opium. Finally, there are the Taliban, a Pushtun faction that briefly controlled most of the country in the late 1990s. They want that power back.
can a soldier who fought in iraq or afghanistan answer this: are members of the taliban organized when they are in a firefight with you, or do they rely on ambushes? to me, they seem more of a 'cheap shot' type fighter. no uniform, road side bombs, using civilians; they seem cowardly. but i'm only going by what i've read and seen on the news.

They would place IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) so when someone hits it, Navy EOD (Explosive Ordanance Disposial) Technicians would clear the bomb site to see if there are any remaining IEDs in the area. Usually, they would place a second IED, in which the EOD doesn't know about, and everyone there would be killed. That's one of their well-known, but effective methods for killing soldiers. There are many other ways they take down their enemy

But you are correct, The US also stirred up religious ferver as the Mujahideen's fight was against the anti-religious Russians. I've never heard anyone say it was wrong of the US assist the Afghans, although many criticise the US for leaving them to their own devices after the Russians withdrew.

The Taliban also sheltered him after certain events in September 2001. Al Qaeda is a self described global organisation, who claim responsibility for global atrocities, so I reject the claim it was a regional issue. Even if it was a regional issue, wouldn't the US be morally obligated to act given their history in the region?
