Yes heavy music can be played in higher tunings but lower tunings allows it to be "heavier" cuz its more raunchy and well heavier lol...play a riff in standard tuning then play it in drop C and it will be so much better...yes it can be played in other tunings but lower tunings make it sound so much darker and heavier
It doesn't need to be low to be heavy, it just needs to be...Heavy lol. The first four Metallica albums were all in standard, All of Megadeth is in standard cept the first two albums 1/4 step down. Lots of pantera is in standard, only noobs drop down to like c to sound heavy,
You are fucking retarded. Dropping the tuning the guitar simply shifts the scale downward, to explore more notes. You can actually play beautiful music in deeper tunings, it's done so all the time on a PIANO. Playing "heavy" is all about riffs and the band collaborating together to achieve it, not the tuning.
Your just proving what i said, it's not about the tuning! It's about the guitar tone and band, not the scale, all these bands drop there guitars down to C and even B thinking it makes them "heavier" it doesn't!
ok yeah I see what you are saying. Any type of tuning can either be heavy or play John Meyer, lol, I do that for fun occasionally. And for people who say "Drop D is for pussies", mikem376, you are fucking retarded as well. There are some songs, if not played in some drop D, C, or A, that the chord progression would look like you are jacking off the guitar. If you want to look like you are handling a large piece of erected wood in that manner, go ahead...fag.

@noremac91 Metallica and Megadeth aren't heavy and well neither is Pantera thats what makes this funny lol....they are good and for their time may be heavy but no they are NOT heavy...the music DOES have to BE heavy in order to sound heavy but if you play "heavy" music in a higher tuning it wont sound as heavy as if you play it in a lower tuning
@surleydrum I seriously implore you to find a Guitar tone thats as heavy as Dime's on the Great Southern Trendkill, thats still contains all the clarity, warmth and tightness of a standard tuned guitar, they don't exist, sure bands like Meshuggah are heavier, and the guitars are deep and peircing at the same time, but they are also over produced to shit. And are just not as pleasing to my ears as the raunchy as hell thrash tones of the 80's and 90's
