It's amazing how much different a V30 Sounds Mic'd than it does standing in front of it. It always sounds great form a Microphone Recording, but I seem to always yank them out of cabinets with my amps. Need to re-accees my speaker situations … I love greenbacks onstage, but the V30 does indeed sound great here.
The upper mids of this speaker sound great in open/dampened spaces..but are really hard on the ears in enclosed environments...same with the Celestion Blue. The V30 doesn't sound too good for cleans either as those upper mids are not compressed like they are in this clip.
The amp and guitar player make all the speakers sound horrible. Is there no such thing as too much distortion and buzz? How about too much nervous finger vibrato? Good tone is a forgotten thing. Listen to Ah Via Musicom. Listen to Clapton's tone on Sleepy Time.
couple things..the popular v30 sounds good in some situations it is hard on ears with many amps and in smaller rooms and have the typical ceramic/paper cone character(lacking tonal dynamics)
what isn't captured here is how these speakers respond under more wattage...where the CB sounds a little ear fatiguing in the upper mids clean it sounds amazing when hit full on with a pair of el84's or 6V6's,the cermics don't react/fell as musically as the alnico speakers
does anyone do a shoot out like this for clean or 'edge of break up' sounds, cos that's what I prefer and probably think most alnicos are better suited to anyway? great review though.
First Jensen and Emminence, OK. The rest of both seem very poor. All the Celestions seem decent. The V30 sounds very present, which may be why it has a reputation for being so "ice-picky" in certain amps. Scumbacks seem darker, which may be way they have such a good reputation in brighter amps. I just discovered that my ceramics sound better than my Alnico's for a distorted Strat. They add mid punch. The alnico's are exceptional and 3 dimensional for a clean Strat. Remember the trade-offs.
Very handy video. I would have liked to hear clean tones too. It's very hard to find clean tones; it seems everyone wants to shred with their gear :-)
If the amp was indeed set to exactly the same settings then based on these sounds I will continue to play using celestions. To my ears they have a more consistent response across the entire frequency range.
The celestion blue and gold sounded really nice. Almost the same. In other comparisons people have tried to make them sound really awful. Probably because they didn't break them in.
That Blue is so warm the gold seems brighter but that could be the case of one lower watt speaker will break up sooner. Jensen was nice mid road the vuntage 30 was wide opened. Most of the Eminence seems to sound like a blanket was thrown over them. the celestions all seemed to cut through nicely. Jensen semmed like the middel ground between the two.
Well, hard to know exactly how the test was done. I liked, in somewhat a preference order with the EQ on the amp set and mic placement: The V30, the Red Fang, Celestion Gold, maybe, the Blue, as well, and the G12T-75. I would have to put these 5 to the test with tuned in EQ. Very good test though for 3 1/2 min. Load a 2x12 or 4x12 and all bets are off!
Hello, someone can explain what are the difference in terms of sound and power between 4, 8, and 16 oms? (why exist different impedance speaker and amp)
and some suggestion of the correct power of a speaker both for tube 50w head (2 x12 and 4x12 cabinet) and 100w head (2x12 and 4x12 cabinet). ty
@00DirectorsCut00 impedance is like a power rating. 16ohm uses the least and 4 ohm the most, the most popular is 8ohm. can't say theres no difference in sound but it would be too subtle to notice, the character of your amp and speaker itself will shape the tone, not the ohmage of the speaker.
2nd question, its a 50w head, even its class A, meaning louder than solid state 50W, you should/can use a speaker of atleast 50w, i would recomend more than 50 b/c the tone on a 50 will break up earlier.
Hard to say which is best. One thing is for sure - that black mountain sounds terrible. My favs are probably the Gold, the V30, and I like the highs on the blue but the bass sounds muddy to me for some reason. I Actually like the Jensen too. I really want to like the fang, but it sounds kinda raspy or something. I hated the scum65. Wish someone would do one of these with less gain - more of a classic rock sound than that preamp fizziness.
The worst to my ear was the celestion 75w...sounds like I remembered them; like its made out of plastic. The black mountain sounded just plain weird, the Jensen was awefull bright and hollow. The better sounding ones to me where the celestion gold, Scumback 65 w was also pretty throaty. I don't care for that kind of guitar sound but it was definately good for highlighting the tonality of these speakers. Very unsettling how much the speaker actually dictates the tone of the amp!
@mKreifeldt You got a good point there. E.g. the Blackbird is kind of out of its element here, I think. That speaker makes thin sound fat - so what happens if you feed fat with fat...? There can be too much of a good thing, I guess.
I appreciate these speaker demos, keep'em comin. I like the one u did with the metal drop tuned tone comparisons, more like that please. As for this Demo...
v30 is powerful no more

that's the best example of how much a speaker affects your sound. such a wide range.

Speaker Quality and Preference is what it's all about .
For me .... An EVM-12S guy ... the Celetion V-30 Ceramic / 60w
and the Celestion G12T-75 Ceramic / 75w sounded best .
But this is preference to MY EARS . We all hear differently at different stages in
in our playing . keep this in mind . I have NO arguement w/ any one in this regard .
