  • Where is your washing machine? In the UK its usually required to have a washing machine that cleans the equipment up to a certain degree, to kill all the little thingies on it.

    I guess its a small kitchen restaurant, which allows you to get all the plates done by hand.

    I am a KP in a big hotel chain and a smallish Pub-Restaurant in the West Yorkshire area

  • ive been dishwashing for 15months and the worst part is in summer, its so hot, greasy and sweaty with no fan :/ best thing is free food..

  • @DjD3vil7 I agree with that, especially the hot part. No matter in which kitchen I work, at the end I am always drenched in sweat, sometimes to my underwear ( and yes, I wear undies #lol )

    And I can always take some food with me for later, older steaks, vegetables or other delicious stuff.

  • I have no problem working a busy friday night (300+). I'm the only disher and we have an automatic machine that holds 2 racks.

  • This job sucks my boss made me work on busy weekdays/weekends by myself and i gotta work double shifts on thrusdays....just 3 days ago i quit on the spot. I told my boss good luck finding another damn dishwasher.

    I dont mind double shifts but those darn split shifts are some day torture. Early morning going to work til noon, than two hours off and later back to work. Barely time to go home and do stuff. I would rather stay

  • Fuck i start my job as a dishwasher in a little bit at a asian sushi restaurant . Nervous ass hell but fuck it i need to pay everything i owe before i get deployed to the NAVY ..

  • Oh and also I love it how sometimes the chefs are standing around talking , but there is never any rest for kp. I hate spending the first hour and half of my shift doing the fukin prep stuff...

  • That sucks that this guys station isnt near to other people. iv been a kp for 3 months, the only thing keeping me going is occasionaly talking to the chefs and waitresses....

  • take my advice if your thinking of doing this job ... don't you get looked down at by waiters/waitresses , homo kn$bheads in suits give you lip for misplacing a f*king plate after you have been working non stop for 10 hours ... most soul destroying and belittling job ever concieved and I didnt even do a full week I decided my sanity is worth more than £5.96 per hour ... so chucked it in.

  • Looks a hell of a lot easier than the shithole cafe I work at. At least everything is brought to the dishwasher and they even help put rubbish/scraps in the bin! A miracle in my opinion.

  • I used to be a KP and I strangely enjoyed it a bit.

  • If you want a really shit job do kping I did it at a large complex not going to say where but it was like slavery and they made us carry around table and chair to be washed and take garbage out along with the usual stuff horrible.

  • Work in ryans buffet 12 hours a day as a dishwasher. U will lose ur mind

  • i've been a KP at tummies bistro for a year and a half, i do 4nights a week which last between 4-9 hours, we do between 70-250 people a night and its hell! no breaks, no food nothing... the best bit is checking out the fit waitresses and annoying the chefs in fact, im going back to work now lol

  • I remember, my head chef would ask me to cover loads and loads. One chef was a proper dickhead. KP job is tough...but fun at some times. Stealing strawberries and eating cake when no one is around, haha. I loved doing that. Dropping cream on clean and perfect carpets pissing off the waiters. mmuahahaahaaah

  • Oh and another thing I had to put up with the rudest chefs ever who would deliberately make my life harder and take the piss and the waitresses would look down at me and be doing fck all work that what I was doing and still being paid much more than me, I was only on £5 an hour it was like slave labour I,m glad I have got a better job now

  • last year i had a job as a KP in a busy hotel and i can tell you that it is fucking horrible, I was part time there as I had college but in the summer holidays they rotored me in for 6 days in a row and on saterday and sunday i did 12 hours in 1 day on both days with no break, it was discusting. On that weekend i spent all my time washing up hundreds of plates and pans, peeled and chopped hundreds of carrots, potatoes and onions and made loads of bread, it was hell I would never that job again

  • Quite easily one of the worst jobs in history. Sure you might get lucky with a nice restaurant/pub with nice staff to work with. I was on a 6 hour shift, no break and forced to work with the most ignorant chefs that ever lived. After asking to go home one day as I was really ill, the chef pretty much told me to fuck off. Needless to say I never stepped foot in that pub as a staff member again - and I won't as a customer either. Kudos to the people that can hack this job though.

  • @JGJamieson93 I now have a job in retail with a lot nicer people and a lot more money. Needless to say I'm much happier.

  • Anyone thinking of doing this as a job, DON'T! You will most likely have to work long hours, without breaks in an uncomfortable environment, washing mountains of dirty pans and plates.

    I did a 12 hour shift last night without any breaks. If you'd enjoy this kind of mind numbing, repetitive, shite then by all means apply for a KP job :)

  • the worst thing about being a KP is that people just look down on you. (alongside the long hours, madd heat and constantly get covered in crap)

  • in my countr--->CROATIA...cooking guys(chefs or what ever you want to call them) do dishes too in smaller family style restaurants (not hotels)...btw this is nonething...i have spend 7 hours washing...)=

    It's all right as well but here I have very little space for washing cause the kitchen is very small.

  • It's a shit job, but the chefs make it alright. As long as you just get on with it, it's alright. I've got it good, everyone working gets an equal share of tips, even me.

  • only 7 hours? I work in a very busy kitchen, only one KP on per night and i have just worked 4 days straight 12/13 hours a day. It is both shitty and somehow satisfying and rewarding, it's a good bunch of people that make the job ok or not.

  • Hehe. Funny video. I am a kitchen porter too and I love it. All you have to do is work hard. You don't have to think You don't have to talk shit or listen to shit from customers. All you have to do is take the piss and work away. When I come home all greasy and smelly, it makes me feel good. It makes me feel like I've actually worked.

  • Hi all, i came back to tell you about my experience as a kitchen porter. to tell you the truth i think working as a kitchen porter is the worst job i had in my entire life :) Maybe because the place i work is very busy so there's lots of shit to wash and you can't stop for even 1 minute to take a breath.. I have to run for 7 straight hours non stop. So it's BS. good luck everybody

    i am in high school looking for a part-time job. (its been tough) But do you think applying for a kitchen porter job will be much easier? (it will be my 1st job) also will I need a resume?

  • You have to be fast! -your hands will look like crap in a few days from all the washing. But if u really need the money like me you have no other option than doing it. :)

    And i think they only need your resume in case you turn to be good so they can call you.

    And i wash at least five times the things this guy is washing.

  • @fefiss86 who in all honesty can say they like the job? apperently 2 people like washing shit of plates, badly burned pans, emptying grease traps, cleaning drains etc...

  • 9 out of 10 dishwashers quit or get fired in the first month.

    Can you handle large loads of stress nonstop hussle people constantly bitching at you hot greesy work areas cheap bosses etc etc (i could go on all day) oh also can you handle watching bitch servers who bairly do anything yet get paid 3 or 4x more then you in tips alone? Dont do it bud lmao go work at a grocery store or something stocking shelves.

  • @DominionFTW - I know its an old comment. But I work as a server right now and a KP in a different resturant, my KP job is so much more relaxed and I get paid more too! It depends s much on where you work. ALWAYS try to get a job in a company owned place not privately, as privately owned places are CHEAP!

  • If they have a Dishwasher, keep it going, if you're having to wash up the dirty pans just put them on the side then put away when you have a spare chance...

    But most important is with who You will be working. If the whole kitchen staff is ok, then it will be not so bad as it looks :)

    the Cheffs I work with are nice, some of the Waitresses however aren't so nice, I'm glad we have a dishwasher though, it's horrid with out one!

  • @Matii84 I agree mate, if the chefs are a laugh makes the job enjoyable! Same as guitar slim, ive been doing 12.5 hour shifts daily, gets pretty draining! By the wat how are you drying your plates and that in the video? In the kitchen im in weve got this thing called a rinser, steams the plates and anything else to kill bacteria.. then when you open it they dry.. Sweeeet!
