Wonderful. It goes to show how poor most domestic architecture is. Modernism with the convenience of modern materials. Le Corbusier, Eames et el would be proud.
It should be an easy build. The biggest hurdle will be: State and local regulations, next door neighbors, building inspector.... Stuff like that. You can easily bolt the system together tethered to steel rods in the pas structure, and it will be quite hurricane proof. I say A+ on the look, and I would like to see a CAD of the interiors as imagined.
Its very unhealthy to live in container. Home supposed to "breath" for your own health, so it should be build of natural materials, like wood, clay etc.
@lldd11 Not necessarily, The containers are not Sealed shut, they have all the amenities any Masonry or Wood constructed home would have. AC / Window (ventilation and temperature control)
If you are considering modular or prefab home, building with recycled shipping containers is worth taking a look at.
Good resource is the Residential Shipping Container Primer website. A SHOWCASE OF SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES AND BUILDINGDS, AND A DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) REFERENCE FOR CONVERTING RECYCLED INTERMODAL CARGO SHIPPING CONTAINERS INTO BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECTURE.
Lots of great example buildings, details, facts, and links to other articles...
There are only 4 x40 ft containers used - there is a gap, using height extenders between the bottom and top containers - Engineered floor and roof beams would span middle section supported by the bottom and top containers. There is NOT 3 containers in the middle portion. Still only a concept, will take some balls to build...?
@taskmasster Exactly, to many people worry about the rest of the world but dont seem to give a damn about our own country, what happened in Haiti was awfull, but you know what....we need to get our own shit in order, help OUR people first THEN help other nations. Im so sick of every one wanting to help other countries when our own country needs help!
@AllAlaskan907 I'll tell you what makes me sick is watching wealthy people spending over a $100 million to support their own elections. eg...Whitman, Gore, Bloomberg. Imagine the good that money could have done.
@darealdjnutz I Understand, how ever it kills me when I see the US sending thousands and thousands to other countries when we have ALOT of homeless people here in our own country. When i see people going on how we need to help other countries I think we should help our friends and neighbors hear at home first.
@AllAlaskan907 The US only sends these away when full of goods we're selling; we ought to be sending many more if we want to have a balance of trade and a better economy. We actually import in way more than we send out. Plenty are available for inexpensive purchase to be converted for habitation. But if we sent more of these out with manufactured good more would have jobs....
Has anyone else seen this as a good housing solution for HAITI ? I think it would be prudent to get it going as fast as possible to save those earth quake victims !
@newagemotor what? The US can't even handle procuring and deploying TRAILERS to New Orleans... how is a government going to convert thousands of ISO containers in quickly in a devastated third world country? Does the phrase 'shanty town' excite you?
@angurisloud So what do you suggest? Waiting for our fearless leaders to come up with 'cheap' housing solutions while the market keeps asking for 1/4 to 1/2 million dollars for the current homes on the books? Or we could just wait for them to implement more 'safety' standards that would drive up the cost of construction. So what do you suggest?
up North it is called a mud room but in the Florida Keys we called it our sand room to shack off the sand and get out of the water swim suits before going inside your home
WOW I made a statement two months ago a single person agrees with me after all this time i THOUGHT TO HAVE THE FIRST FLOOR ABLE TO WITHSTAND storm surge saltwater
i like this for the seacoast because it would be easy to be de-mold the first floor and/ or per set the first floor to be able to be underwater a few days per year because these are steel containers
very nice design

the cost of all that glass would blow the budget & lack of cold insulation...strictly a west coast-type build.

I love this design!

You could rotate the top teir 180deg. and the units would all overlap the lower units making the whole thing MUCH more sturdy.
I like this design quite a bit though.

The space down below will be about 9'-9'6" so good enough for a normal height vehicle.
dogsbutt2000 1 year ago
love the design. question- could the bottom open space in this design be used as a garage or would it be to short of ceilings?
