The melody to this is lifted from the blues-song "St. James Infirmary". A prime example of how Dylan can take a song and make it a hundred-times more brilliant than the original.
Irony sweet irony. Notice the difference between this song and Neil Young's "Southern Man". Instead of accusations Dylan merely stated what we already know (I traveled to East Texas where many martyrs fell). I'm not saying one way is better than the other but the effect is definitely different.
