Indeed, it's all about hard boiled professionalism now. Technically brilliant but something important has been lost on the road from Rääkkylä. In my humble opinion, they're still pretty good, but way past their prime.
I love the original of this song. It's not the skill of the musicians (that wasn't that high at that time) but the sheer unpolished enthusiasm of the performers that makes it such a memorable track.
This performance is by no means bad, but it isn't the same. The band is all about hard boiled professionalism now, as opposed to the bubbling amateur spirit of the early recording. And in the case of this track, I'll say the amateurs win. I still love modern Värttinä, it's just this song.
This is from their first album I think. The recordings on the varttina site are from the 80s so they have that old timey air flow in the background. But with our modern technology its great to hear the 3 singer version in high quality!
