I've found that Nightstalker talent points help much more than the ambush; you're going to move faster than in normal movement and the cooldown becomes negligible, so you won't get targeted while you're waiting to stealth. The seconds really count.
The other thing is deadly brew; it's not dps contributing, so inappropriate in that sense; however, pretty useful in Warsong Gulch PvP.
My opening is stealth > garrote > slice from 1 combo point > shiv > rupture > mutilate until possible to envenom, keep rupture up as much as possible from 1-3 combo points. Pop cooldowns when needed for burst...vanish for overkill, vendetta + coldblooded + envenom at 5 combo points to 2x mutilate to more envenoms. I pull easily twice this with ~360 gear.

@alexgamemaster Mutilate you automatically learn when you go assasination, the one's it's saying learn from trainer is just a bug, you auto get it when you spec 1 point into assasination and confirm it :)

just why can rogues at 359 ilvl only do about 12-13k on raid dummy, even with the perfect rotation which is garrote-mutilate-rupture-mutilate-slice and dice-mutilate-mutilate-envenom and continue with keeping rupture and slice n dice up...
and yes even if your gear is enchanted well
(55% mastery 26 exp 17% spell hit) and then rest something else it won't get much better). compare that to mages, arcane mages do 12k before they even get to level 85! (you'd know this if you were good on your mage)
Yea i have 1 question... I've been playing rogue since i started to play.. I never had trouble leveling but i havent played him rlly since cata.. So now im having a bad time doing quest since im losing lot of hp quickly, so do i need to use recuperate on trash from quest???

Incase some of you 'Retards' Didnt notice this video was made during the Beta. Everything in the video was subject to change. His gear is 333 ENTRY LEVEL GEAR. Let me repeat that 333 ENTRY LEVEL GEAR. However this is not Cromars main class that he plays. Nearly everyone commenting saying wow 7k LOL i faceroll that. This is your MAIN class. Guarentee if you rolled got level 85 you'd be doing lesss then that. Cromars video's are great. It gives a little prospective on how the rotation should be.

6k dps is aboslutely horrible even at entry lvl gear, and as assassination its all about the poison dmg so until you are poison capped your numbers will be way off. using vendeta at the begining is a complete waste of dps, use it once you have ur SnD and rupture up so you can max ur dps, putting one point in expose armor really nerfs ur dps if you are losing combo points you'd be much better off just envenoming for the poison procs and since envenom is nature dmg expose armor is a waste
Do not follow this for PvP. And go sub until you can use envenom then go assass. Open with Sap> garrote> multiates>rupture>Multiates> Kidney or envenom and reapeat kidney or envenom. get around like 4 CP for finishers. And replace sap and garrote with cheapsot for warriors only. They are our only weakness usually. For sub Just Sap> Ambush> sinister strikes> Eviscerate> Kidney shot> backstabs. Repeat Eviscerate and backstabs until they die. You can throw in stuff like dismantle too sometime.Luck!

First off, never open with ambush that's stupid. Secondly, why would you waste a point in improved expose armor when it could go for 3% hit increase? And lastly, vendetta should NEVER be wasted at the beginning of a fight. Back in WotLK, yes. Cata, no. And whoever the guy is making fun of the "elitists", there's a reason we're better than you. Just saying.
ok some of the things he said were wrong.... but ya... the elitiest on this page are funny as hell xD. openings are debatable... yes u can open with gerrete, but u can also open with mutilate like i do, get 5 cp and get a rupture going within 3 seconds. This also applies poisons faster since mutilate hits with both weapons. Gorrete will get Venomeous Wounds to proc but u get a potential 2 less CP for 50 energy... and thats just the opening xD.. theres a lot of ways to play a rogue in the details
I would recommend you, and all assasination-rogues sitting out there, (if not allready got it), to download an addon called "Mutiale". Its an addon that permits you to learn the best assasination rotation, and for skilled players, its still useable. I makes the job as a rogue alot easier, and alot more fun, when you dont have to worry that much about what next to do, and instead playing the game. It allso really improves your damage done for instance in a bossfight, cuz', rotation is alot itself
Mate first of all you have to open with Garrote. Wenomous Wounds procs on it, and if the tank isnt totally ready on your opener, or in case he dont get a good piece of treat, then using abush as an opener, is pretty mush suicide; you actually never want to use ambush as Assasination. And as i can see you have sat talents in "Improved Ambush" witch makes it crit the most of the time, and thats just worse, when talking about treat, especially as an opener.

other than that ty so much ive been struggling getting 4 k at lvl 84 wiv subtley coz i enjoyed playing it so much to lvl but its just not viable in pve but in pvp i think its untouchable if played correctly top dps on my first day lvl 84 still as assassination was 7.383.8 which is a huge step up from 4k it took hours of painstaking research instead of lvling ....sigh! hope this helps someone out peace
kool vid there is only a few things ive changed and experimented wiv instead of putting 2 in improved ambush put them in stealth cd which reduces it to 4 sec which is a god send in dungeons trust me there is nothing worse waiting for stealth while everyone else is doing dmg and as a assassination rogue u will very rarely use it i have also chose deadened nerves rather than crippling poison that more a pvp poison does no dmg also stick 3 in precision rather than 3 in opportunity it gained me 2 k
Hey guys give the guy a break. I won't lie I actually learned a lot from this video. I am very new to rogues though, but I really did find the video helpful. I think rogues work best in everyones own little ways and play styles. They have so many skills to use that you can all get very creative with the rotations. :D
If you watch the entire video you will see he does the rotation properly. The first time he tries out the rotation he is only showing how it goes, not trying to get max dps. So, of course, stuff will drop off! It's just a demo on the first try.
After playing the template lvl 85 rogue with full epics- Assassination is still the best spec in terms of damage output. I was getting between 11-13K DPS in various dungeons.
Really the only mistake I saw this guy make was with the opener. Everything else is up to interpretation. Remember in raiding situations...some of which may require you to stop your rotation...nothing is optimal like just beating on a target dummy. This is more true with melee DPS than it is with casters.
@Mikeanglo At the time this video was made, Ambush was the better opener. Since then, Venomous Wounds has been buffed significantly in order to make Garrote more attractive. Check out the followup vid on the channel for the numbers.
Sigh, I think it is pretty obvious that this guy has no idea how to optimize his rogue. Effort points for making a video like those you do to help us, but it is pretty misleading for people who are actually looking for reliable information.

You wont need expose armour that much actually . I tested and theres not much of a difference . Since poisons got tremendously buffed , most armour is already ignored and envenom is nicer to keep using . Of course adding expose armour into your rotation is okay if your able to cope .
It was a nice idea to go over the classes DPS to give people an idea, the problem is you don't know how to play more than half these specs/classes and are giving wrong information out. Don't blame your gear (and huge lack of hit) for being the reason your "rotation and spec" are not doing well... ever heard of reforging? Its that new Cataclysm thing...
This is why a lot of random players are horrible. People talk confidently in a spec/rotation when they are clueless and people eat it up...
You shouldn't be doing DPS tests if you aren't hit capped or spell hit capped. Those 11% misses on your poisons will affect your DPS. You made me lol. Hard. Nobody should be doing a rogue dps review like that.
Expose armor is useless. You are better off with the backstab glyph. When that crits on bosses under 35% health, backstab only actually costs 25 energy.
Your rotation is just plain retarded. Open with ambush, SnD, 4cp Envenom, 4cp Rupture. 4cp Envenoms until rupture needs a refresh.
@FallenWarrior7 Of course having bad gear affects yours DPS! What a silly statement. News flash: You won't be in high end epics when you ding 85. These videos are done in entry level blues, the kind of gear you will have going into heroics. As I said in the video, you want to gem/enchant/reforge for hit asap as you gear up.
Expose armor is not useless. Remind me not to invite you to my raid...you are expected to maintain your class's debuff if no druid/prot warr applies it automatically.
Garrote as your opener it is affected by venomous wounds. The rupture glyph is used to extend rupture so that you can get more damage from other finishers not so you can keep it up easier. Backstab does not replace it. The backstab glyph is already superior to the vendetta glyph for raids as well. Doing a test on a boss will not net you any useful information anyway.
SnD is ALWAYS first. Rupture would be the next one to get up and you would get SnD up with something bigger then a 1pt.
Using something lower then a 4pt envenom will always result in a dps loss. Your better off getting your SnD up, then rupturing, then doing a 4pt envenom. You have plenty of time to pull that off without using low point finishers.
Shiv seriously? I don't even know why would think that is ever a good idea in PvE. Your poisons can't crit from it and the damage from it cannot crit.
Your rotation is horrid. You open with Garrote for more Venomous Wounds, you don't mutilate at 4 combo points, and you don't let rupture fall off ever.
@ETFjunky see this is sad... this post just proves my point. New players get the wrong information and think they've got it. Find some spreadsheets and theory crafting on the rotations and the real REASON behind it. Not just some guy randomly blabbing about what he got from his 10 minutes on a test dummy and his questions on the beta forums from other people with premades for classes they don't know how to play haha
@Algrons Other than the glyph change, how is that different from my rotation? And, of course, you are only using expose armor if there isn't a sunder/fairie fire/acid spit in the raid.
You are refreshing SnD with 1-2CPs Envenoms, and you're mutilating at 4 CPs. You also let Rupture drop off frequently.
Again, you want to keep SnD, Rupture and Envenom up 100%. So basically get as many envenoms off between each rupture refresh. Use your finishers at 4/5 CP, dont mutilate if you got 4, thats a huge waste of energy and CPs.
@tgnWorldOfWarcraft Garrote will give you extra energy at the beginning of the fight since Venomous Wounds affects Garrote.
My 2 cents about overkill: I think it's worth it, you can reopen with garrote and this + overkill will give you lil' adrenaline rush.
Also, if you have time could you please make a video about recent updates of the dps classes? I can't say for sure, but probably rogues are outdated a bit and warriors got changed pretty heavy.
@Algrons thats wrong lol. if u garrote and SnD you will have a 9 second SnD. it takes more then 9 seconds to mut to 4 rupture then mut to envenom. proper rotation; Garrote>SnD>1 mut> envenom> mut to 4> rupture
wtf? this rotation is really weird.. i just dont even stealth. i just start with mut, expose armor, rupture, cold blood, mut slice and dice, and then right into the muts with envenom and reapply rupture and expose armor when they need to. slice and dice will never fall. and i mantain about 6.5k dps with pretty average gs.. at this isnt cata beta this is lvl 80 normal realm. so... i dont know what your doing.
@Thoraxe555 Well, a few problems with your post. First, you are missing out on a lot of damage from Overkill if you don't open with stealth and use Vanish. Second, your rotation matches mine exactly, so don't know where you're going with that. Lastly, you aren't on the beta and you aren't 85, so your numbers are irrelevant.

Keeping in mind that I'm new to rogue, would Assassination get your seal of approval over Combat? Those are the two trees I'm deciding between, since Subtlety seems boring
@GrizzlyCarter It's mostly for PVP, and somewhat useful for trash. For DPS, there are a lot of good rogue talents to choose from, so it's low on the priority list.
I'm running quite a different rotation and bit different on the spec. I open with garrote, SnD, Mute, Rupture, Mute, Vendetta and then Envenom. This gets SnD to full duration and then it's just keeping Rupture up at all times and getting in as many 3 point envenoms as possible.
Once Overkill drops, I vanish, re-garrote and then get back to as many envenoms as possible in between rupture applications. I'm in 4 piece T10 but have the Bloodweeper and the Steel Bladebreaker. Works well, try it!
Well said mate. I've been doing more or less the same with my lvl80 rogue. According to recount data my dps on heroic dummy is around 6.6k unbuffed in 3 minutes. I haven't tested expose armor yet though. Pls all note that garrote ticks also give extra energy so it's a pretty useful opener.
Glyphed garrote is also a fantastic PvP opener against casters due to its 5 sec silence effect. Just count how many garrotes can be landed in a single fight when our CDs are all up! ;)
@darklord809 Yeah, with the glyph (only a major glyph so there's no problem taking it) it's a whopping 62 seconds. With the 1 talent point in imp exposed armor, there is a 50% chance of it being completely free. That means on average, I only have to waste the 5 talent points once every two minutes. Not a bad bargain. Of course, if you have someone else to do sundering for you, that's even better.
I think you should drop expose armour so that the envenom buff does'nt fall off? Or is the buff alot longer now . Used to be 6 seconds , I would just envenom and rupture .
if you do this at 55 energy then youll instantly mutilate and get the overkill buff. it has to be mutilate though not ambush as some people will say because you have to wait about 1 second for the bar to show up and mutilate does more damage anyway
@killax602 Thanks! I use FRAPS and record at 1280x720. I export to MP4, which YouTube converts to Flash. The key is recording at the "right" resolution. YouTube does not allow you to dictate the resolution of your video; it forces it to 720p (and the lower resolutions). If you record at your monitor's resolution, it'll look beautiful as an MP4 on your hard drive, but YouTube conversion will ruin it.

Garrote - SnD - Mutilate till 4-5 CP - Rupture - Mutilate till 4-5 CP - Envenom.
Use cooldowns / trinkets whenever seems best (depends on the fight).
Use CB whenever it's off cooldown for a 4-5 CP Envenom crit, try to use it with Vendetta.
Vanish to re-apply garrote + get the overkill buff.
Rinse and repeat, I have 359 average item level and pump 25k dps on most boss fights.

6k dps is aboslutely horrible even at entry lvl gear, and as assassination its all about the poison dmg so until you are poison capped your numbers will be way off. using vendeta at the begining is a complete waste of dps, use it once you have ur SnD and rupture up so you can max ur dps, putting one point in expose armor really nerfs ur dps if you are losing combo points you'd be much better off just envenoming for the poison procs and since envenom is nature dmg expose armor is a waste

Do not follow this for PvP. And go sub until you can use envenom then go assass. Open with Sap> garrote> multiates>rupture>Multiates> Kidney or envenom and reapeat kidney or envenom. get around like 4 CP for finishers. And replace sap and garrote with cheapsot for warriors only. They are our only weakness usually. For sub Just Sap> Ambush> sinister strikes> Eviscerate> Kidney shot> backstabs. Repeat Eviscerate and backstabs until they die. You can throw in stuff like dismantle too sometime.Luck!

ok some of the things he said were wrong.... but ya... the elitiest on this page are funny as hell xD. openings are debatable... yes u can open with gerrete, but u can also open with mutilate like i do, get 5 cp and get a rupture going within 3 seconds. This also applies poisons faster since mutilate hits with both weapons. Gorrete will get Venomeous Wounds to proc but u get a potential 2 less CP for 50 energy... and thats just the opening xD.. theres a lot of ways to play a rogue in the details

I would recommend you, and all assasination-rogues sitting out there, (if not allready got it), to download an addon called "Mutiale". Its an addon that permits you to learn the best assasination rotation, and for skilled players, its still useable. I makes the job as a rogue alot easier, and alot more fun, when you dont have to worry that much about what next to do, and instead playing the game. It allso really improves your damage done for instance in a bossfight, cuz', rotation is alot itself

Mate first of all you have to open with Garrote. Wenomous Wounds procs on it, and if the tank isnt totally ready on your opener, or in case he dont get a good piece of treat, then using abush as an opener, is pretty mush suicide; you actually never want to use ambush as Assasination. And as i can see you have sat talents in "Improved Ambush" witch makes it crit the most of the time, and thats just worse, when talking about treat, especially as an opener.

other than that ty so much ive been struggling getting 4 k at lvl 84 wiv subtley coz i enjoyed playing it so much to lvl but its just not viable in pve but in pvp i think its untouchable if played correctly top dps on my first day lvl 84 still as assassination was 7.383.8 which is a huge step up from 4k it took hours of painstaking research instead of lvling ....sigh! hope this helps someone out peace

kool vid there is only a few things ive changed and experimented wiv instead of putting 2 in improved ambush put them in stealth cd which reduces it to 4 sec which is a god send in dungeons trust me there is nothing worse waiting for stealth while everyone else is doing dmg and as a assassination rogue u will very rarely use it i have also chose deadened nerves rather than crippling poison that more a pvp poison does no dmg also stick 3 in precision rather than 3 in opportunity it gained me 2 k

I think rogues work best in everyones own little ways and play styles. They have so many skills to use that you can all get very creative with the rotations. :D

After playing the template lvl 85 rogue with full epics- Assassination is still the best spec in terms of damage output. I was getting between 11-13K DPS in various dungeons.
Really the only mistake I saw this guy make was with the opener. Everything else is up to interpretation. Remember in raiding situations...some of which may require you to stop your rotation...nothing is optimal like just beating on a target dummy. This is more true with melee DPS than it is with casters.

You wont need expose armour that much actually . I tested and theres not much of a difference . Since poisons got tremendously buffed , most armour is already ignored and envenom is nicer to keep using . Of course adding expose armour into your rotation is okay if your able to cope .

It was a nice idea to go over the classes DPS to give people an idea, the problem is you don't know how to play more than half these specs/classes and are giving wrong information out. Don't blame your gear (and huge lack of hit) for being the reason your "rotation and spec" are not doing well... ever heard of reforging? Its that new Cataclysm thing...
This is why a lot of random players are horrible. People talk confidently in a spec/rotation when they are clueless and people eat it up...

You shouldn't be doing DPS tests if you aren't hit capped or spell hit capped. Those 11% misses on your poisons will affect your DPS. You made me lol. Hard. Nobody should be doing a rogue dps review like that.
Expose armor is useless. You are better off with the backstab glyph. When that crits on bosses under 35% health, backstab only actually costs 25 energy.
Your rotation is just plain retarded. Open with ambush, SnD, 4cp Envenom, 4cp Rupture. 4cp Envenoms until rupture needs a refresh.

These videos are done in entry level blues, the kind of gear you will have going into heroics. As I said in the video, you want to gem/enchant/reforge for hit asap as you gear up.
Expose armor is not useless. Remind me not to invite you to my raid...you are expected to maintain your class's debuff if no druid/prot warr applies it automatically.

Garrote as your opener it is affected by venomous wounds. The rupture glyph is used to extend rupture so that you can get more damage from other finishers not so you can keep it up easier. Backstab does not replace it. The backstab glyph is already superior to the vendetta glyph for raids as well. Doing a test on a boss will not net you any useful information anyway.
SnD is ALWAYS first. Rupture would be the next one to get up and you would get SnD up with something bigger then a 1pt.

Using something lower then a 4pt envenom will always result in a dps loss. Your better off getting your SnD up, then rupturing, then doing a 4pt envenom. You have plenty of time to pull that off without using low point finishers.

Sap is amazing for dungeons making it one of the best CCs.
TotT is amazing for dungeons and raids as it pretty much gives you a free 15 energy every 30s.
CoS is pretty great for some situations as well as it reduces the physical damage you take by 40% while CoS is active.

Your rotation is WAY off:
This is the proper way:
Garrote>SnD>Mut to 4+CB, never mutilate at 4 CB>Rupture>Then get as many envenoms off between each rupture, without capping the envenom buff.
Glyphs should be Mut, Rupture and BS. Not Vendetta. Use Vendetta when you have SnD, Rupture and Envenoms going, NOT at the start.
You're easily loosing 2-3k dps with your rotation.
Only use Expose Armor if your raid doesn't have Sunder Armour.

You are refreshing SnD with 1-2CPs Envenoms, and you're mutilating at 4 CPs. You also let Rupture drop off frequently.
Again, you want to keep SnD, Rupture and Envenom up 100%. So basically get as many envenoms off between each rupture refresh. Use your finishers at 4/5 CP, dont mutilate if you got 4, thats a huge waste of energy and CPs.

My 2 cents about overkill: I think it's worth it, you can reopen with garrote and this + overkill will give you lil' adrenaline rush.
Also, if you have time could you please make a video about recent updates of the dps classes? I can't say for sure, but probably rogues are outdated a bit and warriors got changed pretty heavy.

wtf? this rotation is really weird.. i just dont even stealth. i just start with mut, expose armor, rupture, cold blood, mut slice and dice, and then right into the muts with envenom and reapply rupture and expose armor when they need to. slice and dice will never fall. and i mantain about 6.5k dps with pretty average gs.. at this isnt cata beta this is lvl 80 normal realm. so... i dont know what your doing.

@Thoraxe555 Well, a few problems with your post. First, you are missing out on a lot of damage from Overkill if you don't open with stealth and use Vanish. Second, your rotation matches mine exactly, so don't know where you're going with that. Lastly, you aren't on the beta and you aren't 85, so your numbers are irrelevant.

I'm running quite a different rotation and bit different on the spec. I open with garrote, SnD, Mute, Rupture, Mute, Vendetta and then Envenom. This gets SnD to full duration and then it's just keeping Rupture up at all times and getting in as many 3 point envenoms as possible.
Once Overkill drops, I vanish, re-garrote and then get back to as many envenoms as possible in between rupture applications. I'm in 4 piece T10 but have the Bloodweeper and the Steel Bladebreaker. Works well, try it!

Well said mate. I've been doing more or less the same with my lvl80 rogue. According to recount data my dps on heroic dummy is around 6.6k unbuffed in 3 minutes. I haven't tested expose armor yet though. Pls all note that garrote ticks also give extra energy so it's a pretty useful opener.
Glyphed garrote is also a fantastic PvP opener against casters due to its 5 sec silence effect. Just count how many garrotes can be landed in a single fight when our CDs are all up! ;)

@darklord809 Yeah, with the glyph (only a major glyph so there's no problem taking it) it's a whopping 62 seconds. With the 1 talent point in imp exposed armor, there is a 50% chance of it being completely free. That means on average, I only have to waste the 5 talent points once every two minutes. Not a bad bargain. Of course, if you have someone else to do sundering for you, that's even better.

if you do this at 55 energy then youll instantly mutilate and get the overkill buff. it has to be mutilate though not ambush as some people will say because you have to wait about 1 second for the bar to show up and mutilate does more damage anyway

@killax602 Thanks! I use FRAPS and record at 1280x720. I export to MP4, which YouTube converts to Flash. The key is recording at the "right" resolution. YouTube does not allow you to dictate the resolution of your video; it forces it to 720p (and the lower resolutions). If you record at your monitor's resolution, it'll look beautiful as an MP4 on your hard drive, but YouTube conversion will ruin it.
