@hash342 The BH-40 is actually a ballhead with a panorama base that allows you to pan 360 degrees, but I think the "smoothness" you're referring to is for video, right? For that, I'd suggest you go with a fluid head. At this time, Really Right Stuff doesn't sell a fluid head, but check out Manfrotto and Gitzo. Hope that helps, good luck!
@banefox ahh thanks, i actually ment to post the comment on your Slik 340 tripod review :) i want to use the slik 340 with my T3i for mostly photography but also video, and i can't really decide ballhead or 3 way-head.
@makkowenwatt I'm not sure if RRS manufactured or were in the process of rolling out their legs at the time I was shopping for the Gitzos. I chose the Gitzo legs partly because of the brand (my photo mentor had a set that was several decades old) and I was able to demo the ones I currently own on the showroom at Calumet Photographic in San Francisco. That's also where I demo'd the Gitzo heads and it reinforced my decision to get the RRS BH-40.
Great video..it would've nice to see your camera on it during your demonstration. I'm also planning on getting the 2541. I'll be using mine with a D700 and 80-200..you think the BH 55 will be better?
@golfnomad Haha, yes it would've been nice, except I was shooting the video with my 5Dmk2. RRS says they understate their max load capacity so the BH-40 would work well with what you got, but if you're looking to pile on more weight in the future, then the BH-55 would be the way to go.
$700 TRIPOD LEGS?!

how is the smoothness of the head, and would you prefer the ballhead version over this ?

hey man, great vid...although i use the GITZO & RRS setup myself, was there any reason that you went with the GITZO legs instead of the RRS legs??

Thanks for the review, nice one.
That BH-40 has a slightly bigger leaver but it seems that you have no problem tilting it to the 'portrait' position i.e. 90 degrees.
Do you think that it would be OK with the Manfrotto 055XPROC3 legs?
I'd like the Gitzo or RRS legs but they're very expensive compared to the Manfrotto CF 055 series..
Cheers
