this song is not the same without alex lifeson, a phenomenal guitarist for the greatest band ever: Rush. and Neil Peart is the greatest drummer ever, but Gavin is insanely good!
@1896danr peart? highly debatable. check his 'great' drumming in this video: youtube.com/watch?v=Xgm8Cp7iEP8&feature=email&email=comment_reply_received
Damn, this Wesley guy knows a thing or two... I saw them live a few years ago, and I was right before him, he was so happy with this band, I enjoyed to see him playing!
This band needs better marketing....this band has been under the radar until this past year for me. I dont understand why they aren't on every Rock station in America....They are that good. Im feverishly downloading everything i can from them now. im turning more and more people onto them that have never even heard of them....
@SaantGRAAAlll sorry I'm this late. What I mean by pop is that this music is so beautiful that can be appreciated by anyone, not only prog fans. Pop music doesn't have to be shitty simple music (that's another issue). Pop music can be beautiful and at the same time complicated and interesting. The Beatles did it, Pink Floyd did it, Peter Gabriel did it, and I think Porcupine Tree does it too. But I understand. Due the shitty music around us today, we now relate the word "pop" with shit.
@odcastro aside for the Major D chord that's used very widely in this song, there is almost NOTHING pop about this. the vocals, heavy bridge, blues/jazz like second solo, lyrical content, you find that in pop? And the LENGTH. 12 fucking beautiful minutes. I didnt know pop songs were usually 12 minutes long?
@GeneralZaw I don't classify music genres by how many chords, or lenght, or other technical aspects (I'm a musician though). I just see that this music is beautiful to anyone (not only prog fans), and for me, that's pop music. When The Beatles made Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, there wasn't anything called "prog music", so it was just awesome pop music. Beautiful and interesting. So for me, this is the best pop. Forget bieber or LMFAO. That's not even pop. That's just plain shit.
Ha ha, nobody is better on drums. You kids crack me up. Maybe you've never heard of John Bonham (Rolling Stones' 2011 best drummer of all time), Neil Peart (whether you like Rush or not - I don't - the guy is an amazing drummer with unparalleled technical proficiency), Phil Collins, or Keith Moon (innovative drumming style tragically cut short by his death). PT is good, don't get me wrong. I've seen them a couple of times and they have great sound, but NO WAY is he in the Top 5 of drummers.
@skizzle4133 Phil Collins is good, but technically (and i daresay creativity as well) is inferior to Gavin. Peart is on par if not better, Keith is inferior imo, really great drummer but just abit short. Anyway Gavin is better than most in the prog rock drummer, for one, Mike Portnoy.
@skizzle4133 You should read more about the world of drummers and musicians. Mr Gavin Harrison is nowadays considered one of the top world drummers. As you I've seen then live, as well as Rush and Transatlantic (with Mike Portnoy as drummer). Gavin Harrison is tecnically PERFECT. I dont mention any Metal drummer becouse I'm not even thinking in any of them as serious and versatile drummers. Maybe King Crinsom could reach this level. Maybe.
@skizzle4133 Sorry, but it just seems that you have a bias towards classic and older rock/prog. They are all great drummers and I don't undermine what they have done for drumming, but Harrison is reshaping what it means to be not just a prog drummer but a musical drummer. For instance, Bonham popularized triplets w/ the kick, Gavin took that and rhythmically positioned it in an illusive way to make you think at first that it's in odd-time or polyrhythmic but it's still in 4/4.
@skizzle4133 Oh, and Rolling Stones is a joke. I saw their top guitarists of all time and it was a joke. Wes Montgomery defined and redefined the guitar and he was put in places below guitarists who would not have become such guitarists without Montgomery's influence. That's one of many examples. And their top 100 artists of all time? Jay-Z and Eminem in the top 50's and 60's? Of ALL time?
no one can say anything bad about these fellas, their taste can suit many listeners, epic stage presence. and the best studio work iv ever heard. the absolute best. thank you Opeth for introducing me to PT.
It is hard for me to decide who´s better. But If I have to chose, I´ll chose porcupine and Gavin Harrison. Dream Teather is the Mother Band of progressive metal, but for my personal taste, Porcupine improved this kind of muisc. Maybe I´m wrong..I don´t want to make debate about it, both bands are great. And I think Gavin makes more music through his drum set. PLease Portnoy forgive me!
Porcupine Tree is for my taste one of the best progressive bands ever, because the band mix perfectly heaviness and armonies and complex songs, maybe similar to Dream Teather, but the difference between this to bands is that Porcupine uses less mathematics adnvirtuso" stuff that sometimes make songs a little bit boring. I want to get this clear! I´m a Dream Teather fan too!!
@NoiseBerserker I'm also a huge PT fan - but yeah, there are better drummers -- not to say that Gavin isn't a really good one. But, just off the top of my head - check out the drummer from Tool, Danny Carey.
@MasterofEtherium I wouldn't say Danny is better. Gavin is at the paramount level of drumming, there are others at that level, but once there it's just a matter of opinion.
@sertergunay If you are joking, right? Dino is a great drummer, and the older stuff of Dredg is great, but not on the same level as Porcupine Tree or the drumming of Gavin. I learn from both. But the Gavin Harrison drumming is more... claming.
@NoiseBerserker "The best" is very subjective.. Just as, or even more respected drummers are f.ex. Simon Phillips, Bill Bruford, Steve Smith, Jojo Mayer, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Brian Blade, Herb Alexander, Danny Carey, Aaron Spears (+100 other gospel drummers), Tomas Haake, Pierre Moerlen, Jay Lane, Benny Grebb, David Garibaldi, John French, Martin Axenrot, Martin Lopez + many others that you or I don't even know...
