I think I saw The Empire Strikes back when I was too young because it freaked me out how it ended. I was lucky that Return of the Jedi was out, since it alleviated my anxieties, particular those concerning Han Solo, which is probably why I like it so much. Actually C.L. Moore was a woman. She wrote a lot of great sci-fi and is one of the few woman who wrote it really well (not a sexist statement, just not many woman write sci-fi). Shambleau and Others is a good collection of her short stories. Her husband also thought she was a man due to her name until her response to his fan letter; funny that they ended up married. She was one of the first to make sci-fi character verses technology-driven, a ball, no pun intended, that Ray Bradbury ran with.
So true. I love the technology in sci-fi, but it loses resonance without good characters. Star Wars works because of the characters; their motivations and desires are believable. That they're in space is incidental. John W. Campbell was another great character-driven sci-fi writer. He wrote Who Goes There, which was made in the John Carpenter film The Thing.

The ball (private property) landed on her lawn. The kid asked her to give it back. She said no. At that point it is stealing.
She said "call the cops if you want" so they did. The cops didn't want to make an issue of this and simply asked her to give the ball back. She refused again. They gave her a citation, which she refused to sign. At that point, they took her to jail for breaking the law. She stole.
If i were the cop i would have told the parents to take the old lady to court, let them recoup their money that way, but arresting an 89 year old woman, unconscionable. Shame on those cops, hopefully the Judge will have more common sense and dismiss the charges and have kids family take through the small claims court, NOT CRIMINAL COURT, Shame on the cops and shame on the family for calling the cops.
The old lady broke the law. It would be unconscionable to let her go, even after she broke the law after being given several chances to resolve the situation with no consequences.
She stole the private property and refused to give it back, she ignored a request and then an order from a police officer. She broke the law.
She's old, so what? All that means is that she should have been smarter and listend to the cops and been reasonable (how hard is it to give the damn ball back anyway?)

At no point in any of the articles I have seen are the children ever reported as going on the lawn without her permission.

I don't have that problem. Any neighbor's kid's ball that comes into my yard gets instantly popped when my German shepherd/mastiff mix gets it in her mouth. Every media report on this incident clearly states that the teenage boys have REPEATEDLY been hurling balls in her direction and into her property. Neighbors have stated it has been going on for over five years. Clearly this was NO ACCIDENT but a matter of HARASSMENT. In this example, the kids had an accident and the ball landed in her yard. SHould the kids have been more careful? Sure. But they were at NO POINT even HINTED at throwing the ball there. I think I saw The Empire Strikes back when I was too young because it freaked me out how it ended. I was lucky that Return of the Jedi was out, since it alleviated my anxieties, particular those concerning Han Solo, which is probably why I like it so much. And I agree that the law is the law, and in that respect the woman was wrong. I imagine she would have given it back had the kids apologized: if they did and she didn't, I would side with the kids.

If they apologized, she should have given it back. That's how it was when I was kid. The hard part was drawing our tails up between our legs and knocking on the person's door. But we always got the ball back after making amends. I agree, she pushed it too far by refusing to sign the citation. Signing it doesn't admit guilt, and she could have fought it in court.
The carbonite freezing, indeed. The movie just ended like that. I was shocked. I guess I saw too many Hollywood endings. :)

Anyways yeah, TESB has the best ending, as it ends on a sad note, with the heroes and the Rebellion seemingly defeated. On the other hand, ROTJ ends TOO happy. A rebel group just destabliized a galactic government. Think of the crisis that no doubt follows (read the EU for that). All the dead on the Death Star. Yet it's glossed over.

It should have, but again, she didn't respect a state police trooper and state law, there is no reason that a few kids saying "sorry" would have made her change her mind if JAILTIME didn't. She broke the law, that is all there is too it.

Actually C.L. Moore was a woman. She wrote a lot of great sci-fi and is one of the few woman who wrote it really well (not a sexist statement, just not many woman write sci-fi). Shambleau and Others is a good collection of her short stories. Her husband also thought she was a man due to her name until her response to his fan letter; funny that they ended up married. She was one of the first to make sci-fi character verses technology-driven, a ball, no pun intended, that Ray Bradbury ran with.

So true. I love the technology in sci-fi, but it loses resonance without good characters. Star Wars works because of the characters; their motivations and desires are believable. That they're in space is incidental. John W. Campbell was another great character-driven sci-fi writer. He wrote Who Goes There, which was made in the John Carpenter film The Thing.

Thank you avoiceofreason2, you make a very solid point. I see this as an issue of respect and clearly this woman's property was not respected, especially since it's an ongoing problem. I faced similar situations in my neighborhood, so we didn't let our balls land in the yards of those we knew wouldn't approve. And as a result, I've grown up not to respect just the old, but any property owners in hopes that my property too will be respected. Anyone who doesn't see the woman's point is dense.

Refusing to respect the kids property (the ball)
Refusing to respect their requests to return them
Refusing to respect the police officers request to return the ball
Refusing to respect the citation she was issued

Anyone who sides with the old lady is either biased, guilty of doing similar crimes, or dense on purpose.

This is an elderly lady with diabetes and high blood pressure who's one pleasure in life is to sit on her front porch without getting hit with a football from the teenager next door. You think the parents of that teen could have enough decency or common sense to tell that healthly young man to walk down the block to the park to play football? No they rather encourage him to continue to harass an elderly lady in poor health. I hope he treats his parents the same way when they get old.

I think the lady who called the police is a stuck up, snotty bitch and that poor old lady had every right to take the ball for it going into her yard. Does anyone else remember that old people keeping the various objects kids throw in their yards as like a long-held American tradition? It's been going on for ages and suddenly it's a police matter? The movie Monster House relies on it as a plot point. I can't believe the police ticketed and arrested the woman. She should have let the ball sit and as soon as a kid stepped foot in her lawn to get it reported them as trespassers. I wonder if the cops would have ticketed the kids.

What don't you get. She did not give the children permission to enter her property, therefore they could not have legally recovered their ball. It was their fault the ball entered her property. Parents should teach children to respect their elders - it's wrong to annoy an elderly person. It sounds like Edna just wanted to teach them to stop kicking the ball into her house by keeping it a few days - she said she was planning to give it back. The parents should have taken the opportunity to teach their children a valuable lesson about respect & tolerance. They would have grown up to be better people for it. How will future youth be treating THEM when they are her age?! Sad.

The parents did the right thing, they saw an old lady disrespecting the law, and called her on it. The police did the right thing, the gave her warnings and chances to return the ball, told her she would be charged with theft if she didn't.

The ball (private property) landed on her lawn. The kid asked her to give it back. She said no. At that point it is stealing.
She said "call the cops if you want" so they did. The cops didn't want to make an issue of this and simply asked her to give the ball back. She refused again. They gave her a citation, which she refused to sign. At that point, they took her to jail for breaking the law. She stole.

If i were the cop i would have told the parents to take the old lady to court, let them recoup their money that way, but arresting an 89 year old woman, unconscionable. Shame on those cops, hopefully the Judge will have more common sense and dismiss the charges and have kids family take through the small claims court, NOT CRIMINAL COURT, Shame on the cops and shame on the family for calling the cops.
