I know this is an old video, but even in 2007, Windows was just as good for video than a Mac. There's no difference. Don't send the masses out to buy a Mac when they don't have to. On Windows, you want Sony Vegas. They have consumer versions for less than 100 bucks.
Using Quicktime to export your file is absolutely the wrong way to do anything. Thats like going over the stream to get water. using Quicktime will just make your encoding go reeeaaal slow and your files go bigger. So you have basically shot yourself in the foot.
Youtube encodes user files as MPEG-4 in the H.264 codec at 30 fps and streams video in flash. Using Quicktime you wrap the MPEG-4 format in a MOV container which take time and space. So export just in MPEG-4 at 30 fps and you be good.
I'd get a mac to make videos, if I wasn't so keen on also playing computer games, is there a program you can suggest like final cut for windows? or can you get the actual final cut express for windows?

I've tried at least a dozen different settings through Quicktime pro, my Avid and I-movie, all on my Mac. Still cannot discern a clear, consistent, best way to get high quality.
Cool advice, Ive never thought about some of the other settings, lol. Im using a Windows Machine by the way. Eventually Ill get a MAC for video editing.

A good ep! It was easy encoding on PC using VirtualDub, but I couldn't quite get the same quality with it's Mac equivalent, MPEGStreamclip. Now I can!
Windows Movie Maker is a decent program. If you can deal with all its weird quirks and just want to get from point A to point B, Movie Maker will do it. All of my videos were edited with Movie Maker (with some use of Adobe Premier on one). The most annoying thing to me about Movie Maker is you cannot import MOV files directly (you need to use Blink and Smacker or some other converter program).

Do yourself a favor and stop the mac fanboy crap. You could have made a much better video just by explaining the settings. I can export my video's with the same settings that you use in adobe media encoder. The better thing to have said was that you were unsure about how to do it on a pc, because you are a Apple Fanboy!! Why is it that with these people everything is Mac vs Ms vs Linux. Why can't someone just post a video without a bias? All these settings can be achieved with all systems(although linux I am unsure of.). Just give us the settings, like de-interlace, mpeg-4, increase brightness/contrast & use rgmb and Gamma correction, 640 x 480, or for widescreen 640x360, and as high a data rate as possable to keep file under 100MB, and use more than 128KB data rate for audio.

Applying the de-interlace filter in final cut doesn't necessarily make your image better. if you shot interlace often it will look better interlace. It helps to understand what each is... but some times the filter can help if there is heavy movement and you can see the lines of pixels not line up. though to do this it can also make your image more blurry, or at lower resolution more pixelated... Just in a different way. Don't always use the filter, play around with each video, and judge after.
or edit your video in WMM and save it in HD quality, upload it to youtube and tell in the discription to put &fmt=18 behind to URL to have HD in youtube too... this video was just a waste of time...
Use AVISYNTH+Vdub+scripts+filters, to make your videos look clean,sharp,etc. LimitedSharpenFaster, fft3dfilter, TemporalDegrain, etc.. for Filters. Export to HuffyUV AVI.
Use MEGUI, encode your videos to MP4, X264, 640x480, 5Mb per minute minimum, 64k Mono AAC Audio Minimum. X264, looks great at low bitrates. My own test uploads are from 10-year old VHS, look quite good in HQ.
Anyway - he looks a little like the guy that was driving right on me on the Gliwice-Laziska road. But it happened quite fast, so I am accurate in about 30%
macs are expensive. PC's arent. You can do the same things on a PC for way cheaper then a mac.
In fact my experience with mac's is that they die quicker. My macbook from 2007 is ready to be traded in. You don't find many people using those old imacs, hm? but PC's made in the same time are still being used; you can upgrade them.

HI, great website! I have a question. I have a Canon tx1 Powershot whish takes avi files 640X480 30 fps. Once I import it into imovie and try to export it once finished, I will not let me choose the 640X480 image size any longer. I have to chose any setting above it on the menu. Any ideas?
Recently, through lots of trial & error, I have learned how to upload VERY HIGH QUALITY VIDEO, from a variety of encoders - IMO, Riva (FREE!) & Total give best results if you make a flv with a VERY high bitrate (1500+.)
If u make shorter a vid with video bitrate of around 200 or so, you can even uplaod in GLORIOUS STEREO SOUND!!!!!! But the picture sucks!
I wish YouTube would allow stereo sound regardless

Do yourself a favor and stop the mac fanboy crap. You could have made a much better video just by explaining the settings. I can export my video's with the same settings that you use in adobe media encoder. The better thing to have said was that you were unsure about how to do it on a pc, because you are a Apple Fanboy!! I am sure that using a mac is great, but there a a lot of people who don't have a mac. And Linux is not the answer either fanboys. Learn to use what you have.

Why is it that with these people everything is Mac vs Ms vs Linux. Why can't someone just post a video without a bias? All these settings can be achieved with all systems(although linux I am unsure of.). Just give us the settings, like de-interlace, mpeg-4, increase brightness/contrast & use rgmb and Gamma correction, 640 x 480, or for widescreen 640x360, and as high a data rate as possable to keep file under 100MB, and use more than 128KB data rate for audio.

btw 100 MB is actually 102400 KB and Windows is way better than Mac...all programs work on Windows, about 30% of programs work on Mac.

Applying the de-interlace filter in final cut doesn't necessarily make your image better. if you shot interlace often it will look better interlace. It helps to understand what each is... but some times the filter can help if there is heavy movement and you can see the lines of pixels not line up. though to do this it can also make your image more blurry, or at lower resolution more pixelated... Just in a different way. Don't always use the filter, play around with each video, and judge after.

On PC, you can do all this for FREE!
Google AVISYNTH,Virtualdub,Doom9 forums,MEGUI.
Use AVISYNTH+Vdub+scripts+filters, to make your videos look clean,sharp,etc. LimitedSharpenFaster, fft3dfilter, TemporalDegrain, etc.. for Filters. Export to HuffyUV AVI.
Use MEGUI, encode your videos to MP4, X264, 640x480, 5Mb per minute minimum, 64k Mono AAC Audio Minimum. X264, looks great at low bitrates. My own test uploads are from 10-year old VHS, look quite good in HQ.

macs are expensive. PC's arent. You can do the same things on a PC for way cheaper then a mac.
In fact my experience with mac's is that they die quicker. My macbook from 2007 is ready to be traded in. You don't find many people using those old imacs, hm? but PC's made in the same time are still being used; you can upgrade them.

HI, great website! I have a question. I have a Canon tx1 Powershot whish takes avi files 640X480 30 fps. Once I import it into imovie and try to export it once finished, I will not let me choose the 640X480 image size any longer. I have to chose any setting above it on the menu. Any ideas?

Recently, through lots of trial & error, I have learned how to upload VERY HIGH QUALITY VIDEO, from a variety of encoders - IMO, Riva (FREE!) & Total give best results if you make a flv with a VERY high bitrate (1500+.)
If u make shorter a vid with video bitrate of around 200 or so, you can even uplaod in GLORIOUS STEREO SOUND!!!!!! But the picture sucks!
I wish YouTube would allow stereo sound regardless
