  • thanks man! this video help me much !

    you got any tips :D?

  • Hey Dave! I love your videos and they have been of great help for me. One question. WHAT'S THAT AMAZING BASS YOU USE IN THIS VIDEO. Please reply back, i want to know!

  • thanks man, I'm trying this out on my bro's guitar (I have no idea how to play whatsoever) and I tuned it down a bit... I find I can play it alright after a few trys...

  • Its funny, i play guitar and love yet, every time i play Bass people prefer me to play it instead. So every time my class has a class performance they always turn to me and say "Hey, you could play bass for that song" funny. I'm actually thinking of focusing on bass now.

  • yet another 4 CHORD SONG...

  • Very well explained. Ignore the haters.

    Stefan

  • in what way is this a PRO lesson, someone tell me please? Are there PRO lessons for smells like teen spirit too??? how idiotic...everyone can play this. what exactly would a beginner lesson for this song be like, huh?

  • can you play this with the same affect using yur fingers?

  • plug your bass in on turn it up pls

  • Not criticising, but this rif is so cliche

  • @cristicini Marcus Miller Jazz Bass (a lot like a 75' jazz bass with a funny pick guard, I think the electronics are active, the pick guard was like that to accomodate the electronics(?). . . not sure tho, never seen one in the flesh).

    Cheers Dave! Great lessons.

  • YOU SUCK...you playing it all wrong

  • YOU SUCK...your playing it all wrong

  • Wow!

I can't believe all the people that don't get it.

This is a simple bass lesson and done well.

We know there are a lot of different ways you could play this line, but that is not the point of this lesson. I get it Dave, well done..

  • dunlop pick

  • surely there's triplets on the big chorus?

  • he makes it look so easy

  • @winterbo5 That's because it IS easy.

  • these are the same notes that are played in the verse on Beautiful Day

  • Well done, beginners have no excuse here. Easy song, explained well. Realize everyone has their style and comments based on that, but in the end listening and being humble will get you far! I call that good Attitude! I like where he says lock in with your drummer.....yea always lock in with the drums. That means you have to listen.

  • EXCELLENT !!!

  • what bass is that?

  • @BassPlayerRikki I think it is a Fender USA PBass deluxe. The Maple fretboard gives it away and he two pick ups tell that it is deluxe. I have a MIM one, candy apple red if you want to buy it, lol!

  • good

  • hey man could you please help me about on this can u send me some notes ... thanks a lot..^^ send me tabs too ty.. my email.. padillo_itfnds@yahoo.com thanks a lot..^^

  • Dude thanks for the vid, just started bass and it really helped thanks :)

  • Thank you. Finally a beginners video that is FOR BEGINNERS. Where ever you lead, I will follow and when I become famous I'm gonna buy you Chicago Bears season tickets. Thanks Davemarks.

  • wish i wouldve found your vids when i first started. i learned a lot from dmanlamius and coolbear777. its a simple song, but its great teaching for someone thats new

  • can you put more of this lessons on youtube? you're the best bass teacher here on youtube!

  • Great vid mate, we need more simple begginer songs put up as it will encourage more people to pick up the bass and start to learn espacially good tution video's like yours . Ignore the idiots who think they are flea as you will find they are the one's who have never taken there bass out of the bedroom never mind done a gig. Keep up the postings, your doing a great job

  • @langley4141 Sorry dude - this is incorrect. On the original, Adam Clayton played the whole part on one string using downstrokes.

Although the method you describe is more economic, it gives a different sound and if the point of this lesson is to replicate the sound of the U2 recording, your method is incorrect.

  • @langley4141 <------ yeah jerk get a life, get yr facts right first. y dont u hava go at posting sumthing, then we will criticize u ya tosser. Dave yr a legend. thanks

  • 3:55 where did the headstock go?? !! :-S lol

  • i slappeda baayyysss

  • very good ^^ seems so easy ^^

  • Thanks mate, best demo I've ever got of YouTube

  • This was the first vid i watched that actually explained what the frets were, i am a major begginer, just picked up the bass, and this made at least one song simple!

  • oye el ataque con la pua se consigue tocando con el puño cerrado, que esto no es una guitarra

  • can u do lesson on lullaby by the cure, and what type of webcamu have i an going to go get one i dont know what to get, thanks

  • you have a video that teach how to play system of a down-chop suey??

  • If you need a tutorial for this bass line, you should probably just stick to playing "rock band".

  • this is so easy! no lesson needed, haha

But nice tutorial and nice (sound/) bass

  • This is really toprate difficult bassline, wow... ;-) Base of all U2 numbers about 2 octaves... Shite music!!!!!!

  • Well.... that's rock my friend.

  • I hate it when these people say "the 7th fret on the E string." Say the damn NOTE! Not the fret, note! People can figure out what fret to play the note is on themselves! It'll be better for them! Maybe they wanna play their B on their A string!

  • @blueblob4 Totally agree with you.

  • @blueblob4 Well put! And actually Adam Clayton plays the B on the A string, check it out live he's not doing so much hand movement, much more compact with the A string. That's the 3rd fret everybody :)

  • @calinyoz On the original recording, he plays all of it on one string. Teaching people to locate notes is a different lesson and a different discipline. I designed this lesson to be accessible to someone who had only picked up a bass and wanted to learn a line. Note location is a whole other discipline.

    p.s. B is on the 2nd fret of the A string :-)

  • @davemarks

Note location? You mean playing on the exact same fret and string? That's rediculous. If you're gonna do that, why not make sure you have the exact same bass and amp while you're at it?

  • @davemarks snap, burn

  • @davemarks 2nd fret! What a stupid mistake I made :-) Sorry about that! And after listening over and over to the original I clearly hear the slide from the 3rd fret to the 10th fret. I keep arguing with somebody over this, but these days (live) he's not playing it on one string.. Anyway, great lesson!

  • @davemarks "p.s B is on the 2nd fret of the A string"

LOL! owned!!! Thanks for the lesson! The way you showed this is how I learned how to play bass! I still figure stuff out like that sometimes!

  • @calinyoz

    2nd fret :)

  • @blueblob4 in the description it says that it is good for beginners so that's who he was probably addressing but I know how you feel.

  • @blueblob4 people can figure out what note it is too. so quitcher whining.

  • @blueblob4 don't be so nervous, come on.. E string sounds different than A string, even with the same note played, and point of this lesson, if I'm correct, was not only to play this song, but too replicate sound of it, so I guess there still is point to say on which string, but there could be just note instead of fret ; )

  • @blueblob4 Depends on how you want the note to sound though

  • @blueblob4

Where you play the note matters though, this isn't a piano. If you play Paranoid by Black Sabbath (for example) in the second position it's not going to sound right even though the notes are technically correct. Saying the note isn't going to tell you that part and there is a big difference.

  • nice guitar ;)

  • thanks dave

  • i thought this song was going to be beatles ;_;

  • Thanks for the lesson Dave.

  • The very first song i ever learned was TNT by AC/DC

  • im no good at pluckin the strings, but i picked it up very quickly. great tutorial, Thanks!

  • your video is really easy to follow thanks m8

  • good job man, i learnt this in a second

  • ahhh memories.....the 1st song i ever learned.

  • ok im lefthanding and i bought a left hand ibanez bass guitar and i've never played a bass guitar and i played this song easy ^^ THANKS MAN

  • you are good techer......thanks you...

  • Good job man helpfull :D

  • Hahahahahaha hahahahahahahaha aweome1 bro

  • dunno rancids bassist is pretty darn sick

  • picks produce a certain attack sound which is useful for certain styles of music. If you were a true bassist you would understand that and not discredit pick players.

  • it makes the sound more pronounced than using finger which makes the sound kind of quiet

  • ????

  • don't forget, this also is a lesson for bassicaly all Christian Contemp. Worship songs!

    hahaha

  • THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!

i got an acoustic guitar, but i only ever use the top string n i play like a bass... i never play my guitar, wen i do, its for 3 mins... but it took me 2 mins to learn this, and it never gets boring.

my mum just walked up in my room n asked wat im doing, i started playing my guitar n she new straight away wat i was playing straight away!

    i really want a bass guitar ;)

  • Simple......straight-forward, .....and just plain boring.

  • i strongly dissagree

  • Same here. My bass teacher said if you wanna play bass you have to be able to repeat riffs in a song

  • how can you say that!

  • very easily.................

  • lol

  • Comment removed

  • wow. sound great. i love your bass.

  • wow. sound great. i love your bass.

  • Adam plays the song with his fingers.

He plays the D on the 2nd string 5th fret,

the A on the 2nd string, open

and plays the B on the second string, second fret

  • you're my new bass teacher

  • lol its jake gyllenhall!

  • Thanks man!

In my leavers assembly I got asked to play bass on this song in front of the whole school.

I havnt picked up a bass in my life and I normally play guitar.

  • This is a really, really common chord progression in popular music...

  • That's a Marcus Miller Sig right?

  • cannon in D chord progression, REALLY becomes anoying

  • would sound better if he moved the top D and A up to the opens, that would also help with building picking technique

  • i disagree. i dont think open strings sound good at all

  • Open strings are great if you know how to play them properly

  • Dave you're the best! Thanks for this lesson!

  • and nirvana died out in 1994 man..

  • u2 bass riffs are simple..compare this to nirvana's bass man kirst novaselic and this bass is like baby bass fuck outta here..

  • listen to early u2, adam clayton would leave krist for dead... totally different style anyway, nirvana bass is a bit too simple

  • pro bass lessons .. SHIT bass lessons

  • I found this very helpful.

    Thanks for making it!

  • this is a good lesson. to all the haters, well, they'll always be some.

  • less is more :)

  • yeah!!! man jou're the best =u

  • great video...helped me out

  • keep up the good work!

  • yeah that sure is a "great" bassline

  • i mean he could at lçeast say which note correspond to 10th, 5th,7th and3rd frets...i mean he could have said said someting like "10th fret which is D" or something like that to all notes...

  • why???? is it not simple enuf??? i mean its 4 notes on one string man!!! that bassline is about riddim, control and consistency

  • My favourite quote from this - "i quite enjoy putting my little finger around the bottom of the g string" ...

    ... dont we all

  • Or when our instructor goes: "ok class, let's strap one on". :p which is probably lost on half my class.

  • lmfao

  • hwahahaha!!!!! indeeeeed!

  • you sound irish then american great i love it

  • Hey man, don't mind the "boring" comments. I just bought my first bass 3 days ago and really appreciate someone taking the time to get us rookies up to speed. Otherwise where's the next gen of bass players comin from? Much appreciated.

  • man - it depends on what style you play and how advanced you are... these lessons are for beginners.

But of course - check out marlowedk

    he's on my recommended list!

  • okay i want the rest of the song..plz

  • that's all it is - D/A/B/G repeated over and over and over and over and over...

  • yep - it repeats this pattern throughout the song. At one point the bass line drops out. Then we pick it up again - the same pattern.

  • irish dude playin U2. Classic!

    Nice job dude!!!

  • Todd Johnson says that curved plucking fingers are desirable because the hand is most relaxed like that.

  • doese anyone know if you can use a guitar intensifier on a bass guitar??

  • this is cool,

    so easy.

do u have any easy simple bassline of red hot chili peppers songs?

    thanks

  • ahh!

i just started playing the bass and could only play one part from smoke on the water. i looked up some bass lessons on youtube in my spare time and found this. it was really easy to follow. post more lessons (:

  • Nice lesson. I started playing bass 2 days ago and actually I wasn't sure of where and how to hit the strings.

Yeah, it's an easy song, but did you start out playing deathmetal the first day, passenger1jaro? Lick yourself!

  • Best.Bassline.Ever.

  • Yeah, yeah. I like this guy, he's cool, and I'm not gay... -.-

  • Ive never figured out the dumbass snobbery against picks, granted you have more range with your fingers, but there are certain types of music that sound great with a pick. (tight riffs that need to cut through- the police for example) Its a skill in its own, and something every bass player should have in his armory.

  • I can't figure out how a bass lesson on that crap song (4 notes all the time) can be pro.4 notes is pro?And why u'r playing like u have a pick on your right hand?...if u want some "pro" bass lessons look for Pastorius,Myung,Patitucci and others.

  • no offense to both santinumi and wacky...but pros dont use plectrums? never had this bs when I play guitar;-)

good video, easy to follow, clear and a good song:-) ignore the keyboard warriors, smack talking to a comp screen makes them feel big:)

  • Music isn't about the number of notes at all, Its about the notes impact upon the sound. Not all bass playing is about wanking on the fretboard, most of it is laying down a solid foundation. But i guess you figured that out the moment you wrote the comment

  • He isn't referring to the difficulty of the song. He's a professional teacher, therefore it is a pro lesson.

  • thanks u have been a great help so far

  • Great lesson, awsome song for a beginner like me. Thanks!

  • sounds great Awesome bass guitar u have there.

  • Hey, will you please make some more Pro Bass Lessons? I'm learning a lot from each one of them. Thanks.

  • esto es pro?

  • check out my bass video of this song

  • I like the sound of that Marcus Miller, can you tell me what kind of amp you're using?

  • I liked , you can put more things about musics :D

    basic please, i'm learning :P

  • q lixo kkkkkkkkkkk

  • tight watch my u2 bass video!!

  • is it a special basspick or just a guitar pick?

  • I've just started learning bass and I am a big fan of U2. This was really helpful and fun to play as well. Thanks mate!

  • his pinky finger felt ancored to the g string. lol

  • Oh please, honzoid-show us how YOU play the bassline of that song. Unless you do it, you are actually not allowed to say wheter someone's playing is good or not. Moreover, Adam Clayton is rather an average bassist, so you shouldn't expect technically advanced basslines in U2's songs. That's all.

  • I know that song and I shouldn't expect advanced baselines. I told I can't play better than Makrs, I'm playing bass just over year.. sorry for my first comment.

  • I have no idea what this comment means. I could play that bass line and make it virtually identical to the original. I also teach at one of the top colleges in europe, so my teaching credentials are well established. I'm a little confused - what do you think I should be doing better?

  • HAHA did anyone else laugh at 3:40?

  • Even teaching just this simple song has improved my plucking technique greatly. Thanks!
