What memories this brings back. I was a 19 Y/o SP4 stationed at the 121st Evac Hosp and was selected to meet the crew on their release at the Bridge of no return. I was on the same bus as Commander Bucher and had the privilage of shaking his hand. He was flanked by two men asking him one question after another about the ships position and what they weren't able to destroy. I remember the look on his face because I think he knew there was trouble ahead. May he rest in peace.
God bless Lloyd"Pete" Bucher and the crew of the Pueblo. God bless Hal Holbrook too, both great Americans. The Pueblo incident bracketed the difficult year 1968. Why didn't we respond more quickly with aircraft from S. Korean basest or answer the distress calls of Pueblo? I remember hearing of ships being sent to the area but it was too late. The powers that be, crippled as they were, didn't want two wars going on at the same time..
If NK wants to improve relations with the USG it ought to show intent by releasing USS PUEBLO. I would like to see the USS PUEBLO docked next to USS MIDWAY in SAN DIEGO as a memorial to the crew of the USS PUEBLO and others who undertake covert missions on behalf of the USG.
I was a Cryptologic Technician back in the late 60's, 70's and 80's. I have always been extremely proud of my shipmates, proud of the contribution we made to the nation, and proud to have surmounted every obstacle placed in front of us. USS PUEBLO was only one ordeal, and as time goes by more materials will be unclassified and the public will know more about us.
I was born in Pueblo, Colorado and many of us still think about the USS Pueblo and want it back in US hands. I remember seeing the movie with Hal Holbrook about the capture of the USS Pueblo as a kid. IIRC it was ABC Channel 13 out of Colorado Springs.
To PUEBLO officers and crew
You will never be forgotten.
