  • I love 3:23.. that major arpeggio lick is so beautiful, and they way, it's all finger-picked makes it so smooth, adding to 4rainbowed's comment about how Knopfler is so modest with his guitar talent. Gorgeous.

  • Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame!!!

  • Its a bit repetitious.

  • A couple of bum notes generally quite good.

  • yes ...he looks so natural ......that is part of his magic

  • this is why he is the best guitarist in the world...awesome!!!

  • I heard this part on the radio 10 years ago and never knew where it came from until I finally tracked it down here. I saved this clip long ago, but still play it almost every time I'm online. Absolute fucking masterpiece. I just have immense respect for the man's artistry and humility. I think I've listened to ALL of the versions of this solo in Youtube, and still feel this is the BEST one. The man is an international treasure...

  • I had a recording of this track in 1985 and it lasted 27 minutes, it is awesome

  • To be able to hear this unbeatable talent over and over again on UT is a gift. Thanx for this truly great version.

  • Guitar GOD!

  • This is the concert at Nimes (France)

  • This is my favourite version of all.

  • Truthfully, I have never attended a DS/MK concert and only was lucky enough to find them here for the first time. I really thot this was from Basel, since he's wearing same clothes, same guitar, etc. but after carefully watching this video and the one from Basel, I can see that they really ARE different.

  • This is not the version from Basel, check that one out, it's the best version ever.

  • knopfler always find the perfect note to do it perfectly hes the master of the guitar

  • Sends shivers down my spine whenever I listen to this.

  • Live in Nimes one of my favourite concerts!!! The minute 3:00 Knopfler is god!!!!

  • Mark gives the impression that playing this song is like breathing. Lots of guitarists will make a big deal of acting like they are performing an incredible feat, when they do little. Knopfler acts like the incredible is just nothing!!

  • @4rainbowed yes he looks so natural ....it 's amazing

  • @4rainbowed which is precisely why hendrix is over-rated!

  • I wish I were there.

  • No , actually, this is from Basel '92. I've watched them all, and this one is definitely my favorite version, tho' they're ALL great!

  • Comment removed

  • To Xcitableboy: Sorry mate, but this version is definitely the one from Nîmes's Arenas, in France... not from Basel! ;)

  • Sorry mate, this is not from Basel. It' from Nimes. Dont'you see the Arene walls on the Background? See 0:45 for example.

  • Can't get any better than this !

  • The best performance of the best song of the best man

  • Is this from Nimes?

  • Yes it is! :)

  • wow! that is outragious!!

  • This is Nimes ´92. The best Telegraph Road version (comparable to Vaison ´96) till today. Knopfler is the best!!!!!!

  • Magnifique <3

  • GOD plays the guitar from time to time!

  • el mejor solo de guitarra de la historia y nadie sera capaz de mejorarlo. increible!!!!!!!!

  • what can I say - i'm absolutely speachless-I don't play guitar myself but even then one cany see that he's without peer. Not even Santana nor Hendrix can even get close to that

  • El mejor guitarrista de la historia!!!!!!Mark Knopfler!!!!

  • You can buy the dvd "autumn in nimes" legal at amazon and other. When you look it you can see that there is somthing removed on the top in the left tilts. Maybe a TV Station Logo??

  • amazing!!!!

  • Please, is this on any official release? It looks like "on the night", I just watched that dvd and I missed that song.

  • unfortunately its not on that DVD. i dont know which one it is on, but they cut "On The Night" because the DVD is longer than the album is, the album doesnt have "The Bug" and "Solid Rock" so who knows what else is missing lol

  • No one can play this like Mark. No one.

  • my favorite version of telegraph road...

whith disco rythm at the end...

something that that make me ... totaly crazy....

  • PURE CELTIC FURY

  • This Concert was released last year on the DVD Autumn in Nimes. But it`s a bootleg from a TV-recording for German TV-station 3SAT.

  • This is not terrible, and speak english ffs.

  • why speak english ????? no !

  • Because it is the main language preferred in international conversations/messages. But then again, if you want to say stupid stuff like this version being terrible, you're smart to do it in a language no one understands.

  • Allright, for the non- polygloths among you:

"terrible" in this context is French slang for "awesome".

Don't judge a person when you don't speak his language.

  • I do speak french, but that is just one of those many curiosities a language has which they don't teach you in school.

  • He just makes it look too easy.

As my mate brilliantly noticed 'It's as if he's going to yawn at any time.'

  • Anyone know where I can download the whole concert? Torrent or UseNext etc.

Which venue is it? If it is the same venue as the offical On the Night DVD it may be a tad difficult :D

  • euhhhh how can i say ..... best performance ever !!!!! ppfffttttttt

  • Orgasmic!

  • By just listening to this remarkable performance you miss the architecture of this complete work. Have a look round for the full version, and give yourself over to one of the great artists

  • Mark doesnt belong in the rock and roll hall of fame. He's bigger than that.

  • Mark doesnt belong in the rock and roll hall of fame. He's bigger than that.

  • beautiful

  • This is simply one of the best songs ever made!

  • This is one of the best versions I have heard.

I really like the other version from the same tour but filmed in Basel.

This is just as good but in a different way. I want to try and find this whole concert, got a feeling it will be better than the offical On the Night or the one in Basel :D

  • I saw the entire concert back in 1992, it was amazing, even better than On The Night. Local hero was better in this concert, which included Sultans Of swing and Two Young Lovers!

  • This song belongs in a time capsule ... just in case ... so future generations can hear the very best of our time. Long over due that MK belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

  • 2.59. WOW!!

  • You obviously don't play guitar.

  • yes i do why you say that??

  • It's actually one of the easier bits to play.

I like the part at 3:43 where he seems to bend one note to different degrees.

  • shit, this might be the best song ever made, way to go Mark!

  • great song and a great performance. but mark just looks like a freak when playing his solo!

  • perfect solo

  • what concert is this performance from? I'm thinking the Nelson Mandela one...

  • this was a concert in Nîmes' Arena (france) in 1992.

One of the best interpretations of this song, with the wonderful on in Basel (in 1992 too).

Mark Knopfler is a God, but the band was not bad too : Alan Clark, John Illsley, Guy Fletcher, Chis White, Chris Whitten, Phil Palmer, Paul Franklin, Danny Cummings : the Angels who served their God :D

  • But i miss terri williams, making this song even better with the drum and the way he played...

  • Gotta agree with Albernava below ... the 'TL' performance on _Alchemy_ (1983) is THE definitive version in authority, musical skill, and passion. I always thought this version sounded watered down.

  • the nicest part of the song the end solo soo nice, see you 30 of march in holland mark !

  • Great Song !

  • Lovely!

  • Listen to this then listen to the originalstudio version - not a real lot in common, not an accurate enough replication of a truly magnificent piece of music, changed way too much for my liking

  • Uhm, im sorry if I misunderstood the title, but this is a reprise. So it isn't like the album version at all. But I could be worng ofcourse

  • What can you say, social statement not made by a prof, but equally valid!

Does it not map out current life?

By the way good tune and lyrics!! :-)

  • perfect

    yyeehaa!!

  • Mark may not be the best guitarist, technically speaking, though the way he plays, the feeling and the amazing recognizable sound proves that he's one of a kind. His songwriting and compositions are truely the best and can therefor without doubt being placed in line with Mozart, Bach and the others.

Waiting for his next record with will feature at least one amazing track "Seconday Waltz"! look out for it somewhere september 2007!

  • How can you quantify "he is not the best guitarrist"? How can you measure such a thing? It is so stupid hearing people comparing this. At the level of Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, etc all you can say perhaps is measure this by how many people like them? That's subjective though. For me, Mark Mark is the best. Who cares if one play faster than the other? Music is about harmony.

  • MK is the reason guitars were invented! He is an absolute god

  • I'm the reason Chocolate Biscuits were invented!

  • Praise you! :o) Hob nobs too?

  • This man is unbelievable with a guitar. Just Incredible in all categories!

  • I saw Knopfler last year...there was an outstanding silence after this break: "6 lanes of traffic, 3 trains moving sloow"...

  • This is by far the best song I have ever heard.

"6 lanes of traffic, 3 lanes moving slow"

I love that line, cause I take Telegraph road to get home during rush hour, and I'm always in the 3 lanes that are going slow, so I usually call the radio station and request this song, but most stations wouldn't dare play a 14 minute long song.

  • I Love this song...and nice clip - although I don't like the drummer from this period very much (Chris White?) the same as on the On The Night DVD - but an outstanding song!

Don't miss the best Dire Straits I've ever heard: Wembley 1985 - get that concert if you like Dire Straits :)

    all the best

    Steff

  • Chris White plays the Sax : ) Terry Williams is the drummer : )

  • No, Terry Williams was the drummer. Chris Witten is drumming here and he's good!

  • Ohh sorry, my bad! of course it was Chris Whitten! : )

  • terry williams was not the drummer on the OES tour

  • Nice clip...although I never cared much for the drummer on this take - the same as the On The Night DVD (Chris White?) but the song is simply...outstanding..:)

    Steff

Ps. The best Dire Straits I've ever heard is the Wembley '85 concert - it is so amazing - and the line up is fantastic! :)

  • Awesome guitar solo from an awesome guitarist. Thanks for sharing!

  • There's something about this song thats so fucking good. Its so ambitious , so full of emotion, can't really describe it.

  • Humbuckerz: I agree entirely with your comments about this Pensa-Suhr... the sultans performance from the Basel gig is brilliant and guitar sound is crystal clear. On the other hand, you can get a mean rock tone from those EMGs, although I do prefer the sound of his 58 Les Paul for Calling Elvis, Money For Nothing etc.

  • Yeah, you are right "symbenian". I wonder if MK's adjusting his guitars him selfes, or he has someone to do it for him? To choose pickups and so on...

  • thecandyspookie is right.vai is way overrated,mk hasnt been apraised like the master he is

  • It's a Pensa Shur. One of three guitars that MK plays on, that makes me feel close to perfect. His Gibson on "Brothers In Arms", His Strat in "Sailing to Philadelphia, Why Worry, On Every street"(No one get the sound so clean) and this Pensa. Clean and rough!

    Simply adore MKs guitar playing!

  • youre a retard this isnt his pensa shur - he owns five shurs and the only one he uses in a performance is the classic red and white one - this is an mk-1 knopfler pensa stratocaster - you guys no jack shit about guitars - and he doesnt use a gibson for brothers in arms anymore - he used the mk-1 88'-96' and then used the mk-2 for it and sultans 96'- up til today

  • I ment his gibson on the album version of brothers in arms, and on te consert in wembley. I'm sorry for that I didn't care so much for his gear, only his music!

  • you guys dont know anything.who cares what kind of guitar hes using!all that matters is that this solo kicks more ass than any other solo ever!

  • this guitar was a gift to him for his dedication and loyalty to pensa guitars - at the wembly concert he stood out and shouted thank you to rudy who was in the audience. it was the first appearance of this guitar - 1988 Wembley Arena - and anybody that says it hurt his sound is dumb - knopfler im sure would realize what it could do over these dumb asses

Steve vai has nothing on knopfler.

  • this is the time when they recorded "on the night".

  • PS: I hereby officially declare Chris1hsieh, LozModfather, and MarkWillsUK to be medically tone-deaf. :) No offense guys but this guitar is a modern-day rock Stradivarius.

  • Youre all confused... This is an MK-1 Knopfler Pensa Stratocaster with EMG Neck Pickups, a 62' Maple Neck, and black fretboard. He customed it with a seventh high e string later on. Believe me, I own this exact model.

  • A 7th? You mean like Steve Vai 7th String? You got an URL (weblink?) of that? Lucky bastard! :).

  • No, I just mean that Rudy Pensa, the man who developed the guitar for him (at no expense) fit it with a seventh high E string knowing that knopfler indulged in the opportunity to play the high e but realizing that knopfler hates using the string because it will usually always break the neck border and distort the sound of the note.

  • I'll take Knopfler over Clapton any day of the week.

    GH

  • mmm greatest version of this solo live. and the MK-1 Knopfler was by far a better sound for this song then that of his schecter.

  • Best song he ever wrote....even compared to Sultans Of Swing! If God played the guitar then MK would have taught him!!

  • god exists and plays guitar....great mark!!!

  • go and tab that, maybe after listening like 500 times

from a hardcore pro you could, then try and replicate

you couldn't why ? cause thats MK !!! nuff said

  • mkay if you don't like this song you are fag.

  • The best straits song by far for me. Been lucky enough to see it performed live at the On Every Street tour back in the 90's. I wish they would get back together and tour again.

  • amazing! Thankyou for uploading!

Anymore Dire Straits videos you can uplaod?

  • Anyone have the whole song from the same concert? Pliiz post it here!! Since the song isn´t included on "On The Night" cd/dvd. Would be nice here it as it was played on 1992 tour. I used to have some radio prodcasting on tape, but as you know, tapes have a curious way of disappearing and/or just becomming useless..

  • never heard any bad coming from mark. great...

  • good axe

  • i hate this guitar of his.. his only guitar that spoiled the sound, this schecter guitar of his created a sound too sharp.. otherwise its an AMAZING sound.. other than sultans, other songs on this guitar sounded real bad..

  • the guitar is a Pensa MK 1 custom built to his specification, but id definately agree with you i prefer his strat sound

  • Its not a Schecter - the original song WAS played on a Schecter. The guitar in this video is a Pensa Surh. I agree with you. It sounds shit!

  • It's not a Schecter.

  • This a pensa-suhr, not a schecter.

  • Sorry.. yeah its the pensa suhr.. still, the sound's not as great... :-)

  • Some of you want to say this Pensa doesn't top the Schecter? Whehehe.... It actually is the best sounding and versatile guitar I've ever heard. EMG's on all positions, fat Humbucker used for songs like Calling Elvis and Heavy Fuel and a supreme clean for songs like Sultans of Swing. Look for The Sultans of Swing from the Basel performance and you WILL fall in love with the Pensa.

  • awsome!

  • Piece of art!

  • this is the best guitar solo ever made for me !!!!
