I love 3:23.. that major arpeggio lick is so beautiful, and they way, it's all finger-picked makes it so smooth, adding to 4rainbowed's comment about how Knopfler is so modest with his guitar talent. Gorgeous.
I heard this part on the radio 10 years ago and never knew where it came from until I finally tracked it down here. I saved this clip long ago, but still play it almost every time I'm online. Absolute fucking masterpiece. I just have immense respect for the man's artistry and humility. I think I've listened to ALL of the versions of this solo in Youtube, and still feel this is the BEST one. The man is an international treasure...
Truthfully, I have never attended a DS/MK concert and only was lucky enough to find them here for the first time. I really thot this was from Basel, since he's wearing same clothes, same guitar, etc. but after carefully watching this video and the one from Basel, I can see that they really ARE different.
Mark gives the impression that playing this song is like breathing. Lots of guitarists will make a big deal of acting like they are performing an incredible feat, when they do little. Knopfler acts like the incredible is just nothing!!
what can I say - i'm absolutely speachless-I don't play guitar myself but even then one cany see that he's without peer. Not even Santana nor Hendrix can even get close to that
You can buy the dvd "autumn in nimes" legal at amazon and other. When you look it you can see that there is somthing removed on the top in the left tilts. Maybe a TV Station Logo??

cette version de telegraph road à Nimes est terriiiiible, un peu le même genre que sultans of swing a wembley en 1988 ... Terrriible je vous dis !!! PS : au fait 1000 merci romeo40
Because it is the main language preferred in international conversations/messages. But then again, if you want to say stupid stuff like this version being terrible, you're smart to do it in a language no one understands.
By just listening to this remarkable performance you miss the architecture of this complete work. Have a look round for the full version, and give yourself over to one of the great artists
I really like the other version from the same tour but filmed in Basel.
This is just as good but in a different way. I want to try and find this whole concert, got a feeling it will be better than the offical On the Night or the one in Basel :D
I saw the entire concert back in 1992, it was amazing, even better than On The Night. Local hero was better in this concert, which included Sultans Of swing and Two Young Lovers!
This song belongs in a time capsule ... just in case ... so future generations can hear the very best of our time. Long over due that MK belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
this was a concert in Nîmes' Arena (france) in 1992.
One of the best interpretations of this song, with the wonderful on in Basel (in 1992 too).
Mark Knopfler is a God, but the band was not bad too : Alan Clark, John Illsley, Guy Fletcher, Chis White, Chris Whitten, Phil Palmer, Paul Franklin, Danny Cummings : the Angels who served their God :D
Gotta agree with Albernava below ... the 'TL' performance on _Alchemy_ (1983) is THE definitive version in authority, musical skill, and passion. I always thought this version sounded watered down.
Listen to this then listen to the originalstudio version - not a real lot in common, not an accurate enough replication of a truly magnificent piece of music, changed way too much for my liking
Mark may not be the best guitarist, technically speaking, though the way he plays, the feeling and the amazing recognizable sound proves that he's one of a kind. His songwriting and compositions are truely the best and can therefor without doubt being placed in line with Mozart, Bach and the others.

How can you quantify "he is not the best guitarrist"? How can you measure such a thing? It is so stupid hearing people comparing this. Who cares if one play faster than the other? Music is about harmony.
I love that line, cause I take Telegraph road to get home during rush hour, and I'm always in the 3 lanes that are going slow, so I usually call the radio station and request this song, but most stations wouldn't dare play a 14 minute long song.
I Love this song...and nice clip - although I don't like the drummer from this period very much (Chris White?) the same as on the On The Night DVD - but an outstanding song!
Don't miss the best Dire Straits I've ever heard: Wembley 1985 - get that concert if you like Dire Straits :)
Nice clip...although I never cared much for the drummer on this take - the same as the On The Night DVD (Chris White?) but the song is simply...outstanding..:)
Steff
Ps. The best Dire Straits I've ever heard is the Wembley '85 concert - it is so amazing - and the line up is fantastic! :)
Humbuckerz: I agree entirely with your comments about this Pensa-Suhr... the sultans performance from the Basel gig is brilliant and guitar sound is crystal clear. On the other hand, you can get a mean rock tone from those EMGs, although I do prefer the sound of his 58 Les Paul for Calling Elvis, Money For Nothing etc.
Yeah, you are right "symbenian". I wonder if MK's adjusting his guitars him selfes, or he has someone to do it for him? To choose pickups and so on...
It's a Pensa Shur. One of three guitars that MK plays on, that makes me feel close to perfect. His Gibson on "Brothers In Arms", His Strat in "Sailing to Philadelphia, Why Worry, On Every street"(No one get the sound so clean) and this Pensa. Clean and rough!

I ment his gibson on the album version of brothers in arms, and on te consert in wembley. I'm sorry for that I didn't care so much for his gear, only his music!
this guitar was a gift to him for his dedication and loyalty to pensa guitars - at the wembly concert he stood out and shouted thank you to rudy who was in the audience. it was the first appearance of this guitar - 1988 Wembley Arena - and anybody that says it hurt his sound is dumb - knopfler im sure would realize what it could do over these dumb asses
PS: I hereby officially declare Chris1hsieh, LozModfather, and MarkWillsUK to be medically tone-deaf. :) No offense guys but this guitar is a modern-day rock Stradivarius.
Youre all confused... This is an MK-1 Knopfler Pensa Stratocaster with EMG Neck Pickups, a 62' Maple Neck, and black fretboard. He customed it with a seventh high e string later on. Believe me, I own this exact model.
No, I just mean that Rudy Pensa, the man who developed the guitar for him (at no expense) fit it with a seventh high E string knowing that knopfler indulged in the opportunity to play the high e but realizing that knopfler hates using the string because it will usually always break the neck border and distort the sound of the note.
The best straits song by far for me. Been lucky enough to see it performed live at the On Every Street tour back in the 90's. I wish they would get back together and tour again.
Anyone have the whole song from the same concert? Pliiz post it here!! Since the song isn´t included on "On The Night" cd/dvd. Would be nice here it as it was played on 1992 tour.
